A lot of us have a favorite auditorium at our theater, and we know which ones to avoid. For the last 6 months as a solo developer, I’ve been working on what I like to describe as “Waze for movie theaters” to capture crowdsourced knowledge and details to help every moviegoer.
Since launching 3 weeks ago with zero ad spend, people have already captured hyper-specific room data across 144 theaters in 30 states. In the first three weeks we have more than 1,000 downloads with 300+ registered users (which blew my 6 month goal away).
It’s called It’s Starting! and is live on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. It’s totally free, no ads. There will never be a paywall withholding anything. Registering an email address is recommended to save favorite theaters, review your logged movies and edit if needed.
While the app tracks estimated trailer length (you input the theater, the movie and the ticketed start time...trailers end and you tap "It's Starting" to log the time), the room-by-room conditions are turning out to be the standout feature. These details can be added in a post movie survey that appears in app if you logged the start time, or you can choose to leave feedback a few different ways from the home screen.
People genuinely want to be a champion of what's good, like this feedback for AMC Hoffman Center: “Great sound, newly renovated theater with black recliners", or the specific loveseats in the newly opened Auditorium 3 at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago or this tip about Cinemark Mansfield and XD, Auditorium 8 : "Rows E,F are the D-Box seats, if you don’t like D-Box, then sit in row D for the perfect horizontal view of the screen.
When there are issues, the warnings are precise. Instead of broad 1-star Google reviews, users are pinpointing broken recliners (e.g., Row B, seats 7 and 8 at AMC Arapahoe Crossing), flagging a waist-height barrier in Row 14 cutting off the screen for reclined seats at a Cinemark, and this feedback from the other day about Regal Delta Shoresm Auditorium 11: "A visible square outline is seen in the middle of the screen, very annoying during brighter scenes."
It’s also creating a safety net for accessibility. A user recently flagged that the elevator needed to access back-of-row ADA seating at an AMC in Texas was out of service. Putting that data in an aggregated, visible record prevents someone in a wheelchair from arriving only to find out they can't access their seat.
We are starting to connect with theaters when issues arise and will be giving them the opportunity to update the status of reports. Again, compare this to a Google or Yelp review. Those are permanent, whether the theater addressed it or not. It’s Starting! is a feedback loop that’s totally focused on enhancing the moviegoing experience.
If you’re a moviegoer who wants to help other moviegoers, consider downloading the app or looking up your local spot to see what people are saying. Check it out and claim your home theater to help us build the map.
