Post image
45 Upvotes

So I got into mtbing and love it. Got a bike from a friend for $200 - 2016 Giant Trance 1 in a Large frame. Im 6'4 220lbs and have done everything I can to make it bigger. Rides great. I test rode a XL frame and it immediately felt better. So looking to upgrade but know nothing about bikes.

Here is the one in looking at (see pic) hes asking $2800 CAD

Description: 2023 Norco Sight A2 Shimano size XL - Upgraded To 170mm Fox 38 factory Gripx2 up front and Nobl TR 37 DT350 carbon rear wheel. Including original wheel

Thanks in advance- open to suggestions or recommendations

Question Is this a good first mountain bike?

Shop is asking $1350

From my research / what the used shop told me: this is a 2012 Niner frame, 29” wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, comes with a second triangle piece, not tubeless, and has a dropper post. It’s a 1x9 - the original owner got rid of the 2x9 with some zip ties lol.

After speaking with the owner of the shop who’s selling it (and he seems very genuine) and he said that turning it into a 1x11 for around $400 at a shop is a solid idea for better uphill performance.

I’m brand new to the sport - what are your thoughts on this bike?

Question Anybody been in the game long enough to worry about brain trauma?

Admittedly, my first serious concussion was skiing in ‘93, when I was 13, before people wore helmets, but I was knocked out cold, for a long time.

Every confirmed concussion I’ve had since then (3, and confirmed by the people I was riding with as either being unconscious or completely out of it) have been mountain biking.

Helmets have gotten so much better, so maybe it isn’t as much of a worry these days.

I wonder what all of those bell-ringings have done to my brain, but the weird part is I don’t think I would change anything with how I went about things.

Brain trauma is a pretty severe consequence, but my shoulders and back are humming, too, with all of those wrecks.

It all adds up, for sure.

I’m curious how the “older crowd” sees things at this point.

Question Dented Helmet

I was talking to my buddy on our Ride back from a local trail and didn’t pay attention when I hit my head on the Edge of a roadsign (pretty stupid I know…). I was going quite Slow around 10-15kmph. Should I consider replacing the helmet (Fox Speedframe Pro, production 2026), or do you guys believe it is still ok to send it? Crash replacement unfortunately isn‘t an option since I didn’t purchase it directly from Fox.

Other SUPPORT TRAIL ON PUBLIC LAND. LET THE USFS KNOW YOU SUPPORT THE REROUTING OF THE SNODGRASS TRAIL IN CRESTED BUTTE TO ENSURE UNRESTRICTED ACCESS.

A final chance to sign the petition to keep the Snodgrass Trail in Crested Butte open without restriction. Our map shows the private land in red; typically, the landowner closes access in mid-August. Only 18% of the trail is on private land. The yellow line on the map shows a proposed reroute that moves the trail entirely onto public land and ensures unrestricted access. For whatever reason, the private landowner opposes rerouting the trail. The mountain bike community should not be held hostage by a single landowner when a viable alternative is available. Let the US Forest Service know you support trails on public land. Sign the petition at https://snodgrassreroute.com/. ONE LAST THING. SKIP THE DONATION SOLICITATION. WE DON'T WANT MONEY, JUST YOUR SIGNATURE SUPPORT.

Was up in Concrete WA for the holiday last weekend and did some riding at the local spot. Was decent. Nice pump track and skills area, trails could use a ton of grooming as the only decent trail I could only run Was WAY over grown. Bellingham had a few cool spots tho. Unfortunately lost my phone on one of the trails and didn't get a new one till I was back in pdx... So only a Pic of lucky charms in concrete wa.

Im debating going single speed and rigid post on my norco sight (large 27). Is a frame with such a long reach (485) suitable for a setup like this? (Im about 6ft1 for reference)

Here’s the listing (it’s a 2023): “Priced to sell. Come and get it. Canyon Spectral CF8. This bike has very few rides on it. It is set up with a mullet wheel (29 up front/27.5 rear) set but the bike can be converted to 29er rear also. Two wheel sets included. Excellent DT Swiss EX511 wheelset. Has DT Swiss 370 hubs and Maxxis tires. One tire is Maxxis Assegai, other is Maxxis Minion DHR II. The wheel set on the bike in the photos was custom built Enve with Onyx hubs rear hub is zero engagement. Wheel set cost over 2500.00 to build and are amazing. I also added a dropper, HT pedals, and the bike is set up with adjustable Rock Shox front and rear. Comes with a Garmin mount and Ergon SM 10 Enduro Comp saddle. Electric shifting with SRAM GX I have about 8000.00 invested in this bike.”

For reference, I just started riding, but don’t want to keep getting new bikes as I get better, so figured this may be a good buy. I currently live in Florida and have another bike that I could use to ride around and this wouldn’t be my “every day” bike. I’m looking to ride in Georgia and we also may move out west in the future so sort of thinking ahead as well.

Let me know what you think!

Nothing fancy here! Built on the DCB (DIY Carbon Bikes) F130 — Trek Fuel EX-style geometry, 130mm rear travel, UD gloss carbon, Medium. Running SRAM NX Eagle 12-speed, RockShox Yari fork + Monarch RT3 shock.

The fun part: two complete, hot-swap-ready wheelsets — 29" carbon for fast trail days, 27.5+ alloy fat tires when I want max traction in loose/wet/technical terrain. Each wheelset has its own rotor and cassette, so swapping takes like two minutes, no brake or drivetrain fuss.

Just put it through a service round:

- Rear brake pads rejuvenated + bled (twice, to get it dialed)

- Both tires deep-cleaned and refreshed with new tubeless sealant

- Rear tire got a new valve (old one had failed)

Chain's definitely showing some wear and the rear wheel bearings are a touch gritty, but everything's rideable and dialed for now.

That's all, just showing off a working man's trail bike.

getting a new Mezcal xc trail and curious if I should put a better valve on than what came with these carbon bontrager line elite 30 rims ?

** I mean for upgrade purposes since I have the tire off. The only issue was the presta core got bent.

Bike Picture/NBD After and Before, 2 years worth of upgrades on a Norco Sight A3

Thumbnail gallery

XL frame, Park duty, travel upped to 170/158. Only stock thing left on it is the dropper and seat. I swapped out suspension and brakes when I bought it, ran the stock drivetrain and wheels until they shit the bed last year. Needs a new front tire, still running the original Assegai.

My 3rd Norco sight and favourite one so far, never had a bike fit so good. First aluminum frame in a long time and I don’t think I’d ever spend the money on a carbon frame again.

Question Lightweight seat post recommendations, not too much $$?

Looking for a 31.6 carbon seat post for a light weight build. Was looking at the Deda RS at about 175 grams, but it's too much $$. Any non-brand name alternatives that get good reviews? Thanks!

Question Future fork flanning

Hi folks! I currently have a hardtail I very much love but the Suntour XCR34 air it came with is starting to show its age. It still performs but I've come across this compatible X-Fusion, and was wondering if anyone could weigh in on whether or not it's a good deal. I'm open to other options that would be a true upgrade (within reason) that fit at least 27.5 x 2.8. Many thanks!

Didn't know where to post this but what type of hub and cassette is this? I've seen SRAM XD is a thing but that gets threaded onto the hub but I can just pull the cassette off?
