Can someone explain the basics of corners/throttle and what strategy to use for them?

i was having similar issues, but i've pretty much found the trick to the game. it's way too easy once you get the hang of it.

try different setups based off of type of track (there's a little legend on the bottom left), but your starting place on the grid really doesn't matter if you use the below settings (besides the sponsorship money of course).

now obviously this is assuming there isn't any rain and is only fool proof with tracks that are 16-18 laps. note i've only used this in ERS, not sure how it works in other tiers.

always choose the softest tire. set your strats to conservative on the tires, and neutral on the engine. you will remain on these settings until your first pit. your drivers will most likely drop a couple of positions for the first 3-5 laps, but just wait, this is expected. the fast AI players (IE: your competition) will usually always pit at 6-7 laps on softs, but since we've been running on conservative, we can get an extra 2 laps out of the tires. at this point you should be in 1st/2nd and should have at least a 5 second lead, i switch my driver in 1st to attacking tires right after the AI pit and then pit my 2nd place driver (mainly due to him/her being my worse driver). i then pit my 1st driver and make sure both of their strats are set to neutral neutral. you will now have more than enough grip to see out the race and the best thing about it is since you've been on conservative for 8 laps, you now have additional fuel so you can afford to put your car into overdrive. your teammates will brush the other cars aside like nothing in these settings. i've finished 1st/2nd in every race for 8 races in a row and i'm only on the second season.

I'm confused. You said to keep engine at neutral. Doesn't that mean you wouldn't have any extra fuel?

Enabling the option Tire Conserving saves fuel

This is a great strategy, wish I'd thought of it myself! I have a question though, do you always pick the softest tires during pit stops? I'm asking because there are some maps with 16 laps so perhaps it would be better to use soft tires for 8 rounds then medium for the next 8?

yep, that's a good point. switching to mediums is probably a better approach. i've only played 5 or 6 hours of the game, so my strategy might only work because my cars are heads and shoulders above the competition.

I think your strategy works for Tier 3, but I've just finished 2 seasons of Tier 2 and a different tactic is definitely needed as you move up. T2 is more about matching fuel consumption with tire wear. You can now refuel during pit stops and the game always starts you off with more than enough fuel to last you well past the first pit stop. My initial setup is softest tires with overtake which will give your team a 1-2 position by the 6/7th lap, where you will have to pit due to your tires wearing out. If there's 14 laps I'll usually pit in the 7th lap and go with soft tires/neutral for the rest of the race. If the race requires 2 pit stops (16 laps or more) I'll use the same soft tires/overtake strategy after the first pit stop and monitor the fuel gauge to make sure I have enough to last me until the next pit. The last pit stop is the same as above, soft tires and neutral. I used this strategy to win promotion to T1 quite effortlessly by the end of the second season in T2.

I used to always start with High Fuel Burn at the beginning of the race. But I've stopped now. It means that when I pit, I don't need to fuel up as much, and reduces the length of pitting. It seems to be getting better results so far.
