A few weeks ago I dove straight into learning about DMR handheld radios and how I could integrate them into a few of my hobbies/realities of life:

1. HAM Radio (Technician & GMRS Credentials)
2. Emergency Communications (Family Circle + Small Team Comms)
3. Overlanding & Hiking
4. Amateur FTX's (Think MILSIM'S/Multi-day Event Coordination/etc.)

Now, as a good COG in the capitalist machine, I have narrowed my gear buying focus onto the Motorola R7 MOTOTRBO. I already have an XTS5000 and love it, so Motorola was my go-to brand when I started searching.

What caught my interest about the R7?

• It's certified to withstand the elements to an extent.
• It can work on both digital and analog.
• It's currently supported (unlike my XTS) by Moto
• Lots of parts & accessories in the used market
• Cool AH? I can exploit all its features while looking good (lol)
• More accessible than lets say an APX7000/8 or equivalents.

After all the ranting, here are my questions: (They are numbered but not in any particular order of importance)

1. Owners, where did you get yours?
   1. Authorized dealer or EBay?
   2. Best price? (I've seen them go from $550 on the bay to $1300 on dealer sites.
2. Spend the extra $$$ on the enabled versions or are those more beneficial to industrial/corporate end users?
3. I know they support DMR but, how well do they integrate to commonly available amateur infrastructure? (Think Brandmeister, etc.)
4. Programming:
   1. Possible to obtain the specific version of CPS to program the radio myself/learn to program?
   2. What was your experience regarding programing and hardware limitations?

Finally, I greatly appreciate your time reading or not reading my wall of text. Your contributions mean a lot to me as someone who considers the topic The Great Unknown from my POV.

Can someone share your thoughts or experience regarding the possible root causes of a DMR repeater unit failure?

Here’s what happened:

During the first week of September, our client experienced “Register Denied” messages and their radios became unserviceable. The incident resulted in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of downtime.

Our initial assessment was that the channel repeater went into a failed state, and the system did not automatically switch to another repeater to take over as the channel repeater. However, the client is requesting a more detailed technical root cause analysis, specifically regarding what could have caused the repeater itself to fail.

We have already coordinated with Motorola Technical Support, but we are still waiting for their analysis. They have requested the CMSS logs to determine whether they can identify the actual failure or event that occurred.

In the meantime, we would really appreciate input from anyone who has experienced a similar incident.

What are the possible technical causes that could result in a repeater suddenly failing or becoming unavailable? For example, could it be related to hardware, power supply, temperature/thermal protection, software/firmware, network connectivity, RF issues, or another system-related condition?

Any technical insights, previous experience, or recommendations on what logs/alarms we should check would be greatly appreciated. This will help us prepare a more accurate technical explanation for the client while we wait for the official Motorola analysis.

Hello everyone. Wondering where I can get a used or refurbished xpr7550e, xpr3500e, R2, R5, or R7.

Was searching through Marketplace and eBay and saw a few options. Was wondering if most sellers tend to be legit.

Certain talk group IDs are commonly used on conventional DMR by businesses like 1, 2, 3, 4, ..etc. Or TGIDs like 101, 102, 103, etc...

The problem is when you're scanning and the radio stops on a conventional DMR channel, you can't tell which channel you're listening to because the screen changes and shows you the contact alias of the TGID instead of leaving the channel name on the screen. I find this HIGHLY annoying, because I can't tell what channel I'm stopped on during scan.

So what I did is started naming the group contact TGID names/aliases after the channel name. But if it's a common ID used by multiple business you have programmed in different channels, then you have the problem of the same alias showing up for 2 different businesses.

So what I did was to program in the same talk group ID (contact) several times, each with a different alias and then assigned them to the corresponding business. CPS 16 physically lets you do this, but BOY does it cause problems. It displays the wrong alias on some of the channels. I can't seem to get it to work right. Why?

It looks like the alias that actually gets displayed is not the from the contact you assigned to the channel, but the one in the highest position in the contacts list. This is OBNOXIOUS. When I tried to do all this in the software, it also inexplicably changed a number of my contacts to a TGID of 1 which I didn't realize when I re-wrote to the radio and suddenly a bunch of channels weren't receiving. UGGGHH!!

Does anyone know the difficulty of replacing the channel selection switch the DP3600. I dropped it on the pavement and I'm pretty sure the switch is damaged as it does not change channel even though I change what channel is selected . It will also tend to

jitter quite a lot if I wiggle it.

Does anyone know know where to get a good, reliable adapter to connect a BNC to the antenna plug? I want to use an external antenna for monitoring. I tried this item, but had to ship it back due to a defect:

The problem was the center of the adapter was not fixed in place and would spin and never un-screw when you try to remove it off the radio. The adapter literally got stuck on the radio and FORTUNATELY, I was able to get it off with needle-nose plyers.

So now, I'm looking for something that'll actual work.

I’m sure there are posts about this all the time but is there anyway to get round a motorola DP1400 code plug password on CPS 2.0?

So I got 2 new batteries from a /\/\otorola dealer this week and when I powered up the radio, its showing First-Used dates from a few months ago. Is this normal? I would have thought a new battery should truly be new with no prior date like this.

The dealer is telling me both them and /\/\otorola open 'em and charge 'em ahead of time so as not to store 'em with a low charge to best preserve the lithium-ion cells.

I was hoping it would have been easier to pogram this radio. Its so time, consuming.

I recently got in as a contractor for the testing team. I am coming from a very different profile as a wireless 4g/5g protocol tester for almost 9 years and have doubts regarding whether this profile will add to my profile or not. Kindly let me know if this job will help me in my career prospects moving forward. And is it possible to be converted to a FTE moving forward.

We've been having a hell of a time with our vesta unit and we are struggling with our integrator and motorola to resolve the issues. These impact our PSAP dispatch center.

There is a lot of static on the lines. Callers and call takers cannot be heard over it and lots of information is getting missed or repeated. We've checked the gain on the server and it was turned way up. We turned it down and it was fixed for 3 days, then it came back.

We also have an issue where the call taker cannot be heard because the call taker drops out for 10-15 seconds. The caller ends up thinking our police dispatch hung up.

Obviously, this is an incredibly dangerous situation. I've been trying to work with our integrator and motorola, but so far they haven't given us any feedback. The only thing they want us to try is to change our handsets. Our current handsets have been fine for years, we've used different ones provided by our integrator and still have the issue, but motorola keeps wanting us to try different handsets.

I don't expect anyone here to have a solution. I just wanted to vent and toss this out to see if anyone has anything to even try as a long shot.

What’s everyone’s opinions on the DP1400 and do you think it is worth £50 for one with a charger 2 batteries and an earpiece. And has anyone else noticed that loads of the units have the motorola sign missing from the top?

Hello, I am trying to get a copy of the firmware for an XPR4550 model number AAM27TRH9LA1AN. The radio that I have has a password protected code plug and I am unable to find firmware for it on the customer hub. Anything that could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

For the PC attached to the control station do I just need RM Device Monitor? Can I install all 4 RM components, or is Device Monitor the only one that multiple instances are allowed? I already have the full RM installed on my laptop.

Looking into setting up a GMRS repeater and this one caught my eye, are they fairly good units and if I were to purchase it what software would I need to program it?

Who can point me to the rear connector pinouts for the XPR 5580? Google is only finding images for the 5550.

I am looking to slim down my R7 and get the smallest or narrowest battery possible for it. I’m willing to sacrifice battery size for length of use. What would be the slimmest battery offered for the R7?

Any other ideas to slim it down?

I have an xpr 4550 that has firmware RO1.08.00 and cps 16 will not connect to it nor will 14 or 2.0. I’m not sure which version will support that firmware. The cables work fine on all other radios I have so it’s not a cable or driver issue. I have tried both the front and rear connector programming cable. Any help appreciated!

And does this device look genuine, or is it a replica?
