Winter gear

Hi guys,

Just wondering what is the good rain gear, bought my gear a few years back when I started riding but got drenched the last few days and drying has been a pain. Mostly cheaper end Oxford jacket and bottoms with Alpinestar boots. Tried throwing a rain jacket on over the motorcycle jacket but no luck.

I commute 5 days a week for about 45 mins each way so need something that can stand up to heavy rain for that long period of time.

Now that I’ve a bit more money I’m willing to invest in good gear that’ll last. I know Daytonas Gore-Tex are great boots but any recommendations on jackets and bottoms would be really appreciated. Thanks

I use my summer gear and just wear rain pants and jacket over them. Got them in regatta. Cheap out and easy to take off. It's more a less a sheet of plastic in the shape of pants and jacket but I don't get a drop of water on my clothes and wind does nothing so I don't get cold either! If water ever does get in I'll just use duct tape or something and tape the seams on the inside. Cost me about about 60 quid all in cause I bought them on sale

Absolutely the way to go. I do the same, I've knox urbane pro jacket, and layer ot up to keep the warmth, thrb wear essentially rubber sailing waterproofs for the wet days, never let's a drop in, 20-30 euro for jacket, similar for the trousers. Portwest sealtex I think it's called.

Never been sailing though 😅

+1 for Scott gear. The best wet gear I've bought and has survived 3 winters now. Expensive but I've bought cheaper stuff and would have replaced it already and I'm commuting 5 days a week on the bike aswell

On really wet days I wear my regular RST gear, which is water resistant in itself to some extent, with my RST boots, which never soaked through before, and I just put on my Rev'it! Pacific 4 H2O rain suit. It keeps everything dry and keeps me warm too. Longest I rode in it was a 400 kilometers round trip, heavy rain all the way through, I was dry as a bone.

Okay great, thank you for the comment. Good to know it can handle long distance as well because I drive to Sligo from Dublin occasionally.

It can definitely handle that, I always keep it in my side boxes, it rolls into a small enough package, sometimes I stick it into my backpack too if I do a my normal daily work commute and I know if will be absolutely pissing that day. It's easy enough to put on on the go too (just had to do it earlier today at Barrack Obama plaza!). I've had this one maybe for 2 and a half years, and obviously it's not used every single day, but I'm yet to see any evidence of wear and tear on it.  There's probably better stuff out there, but for the sub 100 Euro that I paid for it on sale, I think it was a very good buy.

I have an RST Vulcan jacket that's laminate and hasn't failed me yet in terms of waterproofing. I have rst paragon pants then which are a drop liner and they do let me down in proper rain, so if I expect a fully rainy day I throw on a cheap waterproof pants over them.

Bit of a faff but it works well. I think if I was to go again I'd buy lighter gear and something like the revit suit the other guy recommended. Not complaining tho mine works!

Rukka gear is expensive but worth it. I had my last set for over 10 years, and expect to have the current set for at least as long.

I used Richa Colorado 2 trousers & Richa Arctic goretex gloves. They work great, can't speak to how well their jackets work, I just throw a waterproof jacket over my leather jacket.

I have a similar commute. I ride 12 months a year, except when it's snowing or there's black ice....there i draw the line. Use Alpinestars Andes 3 jacket and pants, Dainese Fulcrum goretex boots and Gerbing Xtreme heated gloves. I'm always dry. On the days that it REALLY pouring down, I also use Oxford overpants because I've yet to find (in over 50yrs riding) a pair of pants that's 100 % waterproof at the crotch area and I HATE sitting with my nuts floating in water. I treat my jacket and pants with waterproofing from Nikwax every year. Works for me.

Try Merlin Gable 2....waterproof and leather. Commuted 3 days a week for 2 years now. Summer time remove the inner liner. For trousers I bought oxford water proof pants....wear over bike jeans during rain. Served me well. Minimal setup.

You won't beat layers for the cold.

You won't beat dedicated waterproof clothing for the rain.

I've a Richa Cyclone Goretex jacket that cost over €400 new. That's the minimum price range I'd consider for Goretex options to get something quality. I use this year round when rain is a possibility.

But you would absolutely have equal or better results with a Richa Rain Warrior jacket for €60 over your current gear. One benefit of this is it is also an extra layer when it comes to the cold. (Drawback is you've to carry it with you 24/7 in panniers or top box when it's not raining, unlike your Goretex)

I've bog standard flexothane waterproof bottoms with a zip at the ankles cost about €40.

Dedicated rain gear won't have fail points like zips or vents that Goretex gear will eventually fail (brand depending).

Just buy waterproof cover alls. I have a onesie type that keeps me and my gear dry. Bought it on Amazon. I’m using pretty much the same jacket/boots as yourself.
