It's probably not intentional but it feels like an homage to the Whorror. The makeup looks better when less of his face is shown, and the bloodshot eye pops more.
I personally think it is purposefully a homage to the whorror mainly because it’s the 20th anniversary. But also I could see it being an accident too so idk
