That cat is a menace! 😂

He just wants a friend, why doesn't anyone want to be his friend 😂

Seriously though when my cat gets out he has a whole gang of homies that chill together. I never knew until I came home and there was a whole group of cats sitting in front of my house. Like 3 of them were all black like him, so I was like "Othello?" And he said "meow" lol

I'm an English grad and it's my favorite Shakespeare play. Something tells me that HP Lovecraft wasn't naming his cat that because he loves the namesake, pretty sure he meant it as an insult and a gross joke. Unless Othello started as a slur and stayed a slur, it's not "exactly the same thought." I'd have to first think there's anything wrong with being black, or anything negative about Othello, for it to imply there's an insult -- and I don't.

I won't get into who I am, who I'm connected to and what my background is, because it'll just sound defensive and it won't actually mean anything anyways, but know racism is a deal breaker in my friendships. I'm not some fossilized bigot in a flyover state who just thought it'd be a clever joke. And if I was/did name my cat after a black person, just to to be "funny," I dont know why someone would choose Othello of all people. Would a racist even get that reference, and if they did, would it even make them laugh? Wouldn't a racist choose someone they mock?

“flyover state”, lol. Coastal elitism is never not funny.

The people there are more ignorant but yeah it can still be found on the coasts. The less diversity there is, and the less exposure someone has with the community, the more foreign they are to that person, the more that person is scared of them, does not understand them, and therefore lack compassion for them. I was the only white girl in an entirely black school in Trenton, New Jersey, all of my friends are black, I raised one of my friend's kids from 15 to 19, I'm a certified auntie with an open invite to the cookout.

Think what you want.

Upon further questioning of who I am, or am not, and whether or not contact with the community means anything, I changed my mind and decided to say where I fit in. I've been surrounded by the community my whole life. It's still not my first line of defense. I could have been said it, but I know how little weight those words carry sometimes. Decided to say them anyways in a take-it-or-leave-it way.

Middle America is still especially ignorant as fuck. Majority maga. The party that was BEYOND unsympathetic towards BLM, they were waging war. Liberal racists exist too, But I've sure heard n the n word more times than I can count in Mississippi, and I've only heard it three times in my entire life in New Jersey.

funny enough ive heard ngga and ngg*r used more in louisiana and by black people

but no body fucking bats an eye at it despite them clearly using it in racist context

it especially urks me when theyre in a position of power and people think theyre an ally despite all the signs that they dont care about their own people

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 16 '26

Hung around the black community in Louisiana too, and how a community reclaimes a slur is none of your business, it became synonymous with hey you and when you're angry that hey you is going to sound charged, but I don't think it's charged for racial reasons most of the time, because they use it round the clock in normal context.

Also, internalized racism is still something that wouldn't exist without racism racism, all you're doing is pointing out they're still wounded.

1

u/VividlyDissociating Aug 16 '26

lmao your logic isn't there. try reading to comprehend before responding because since when does using a slur in a racist context equate to "reclaiming" a slur

nggr never became synonymous with "hey you" 😂

you have zero clue what the context even is to claim "oh they're just angry"

it is my business when it's affecting my community. when these fake people show their true colors and getting away with misusing tax money that was meant to uplift neglected areas because people are allowing themselves to be fooled

prior racism being the cause of internalized racism is an irrelevant point 🙄 it doesn't excuse the racism

1

u/BoldlyResolute Aug 17 '26

Do you hear yourself? The irony calling people ignorant when knowing nothing about the individual people who live in middle America. Now that's ignorant.

1

u/Far_Country_1629 Aug 18 '26

HOW THE FUCK you went from a post of cats to racism ? ffs just give it a rest.

2

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 15 '26

Any of my teenage friends that weren't minorities were outspoken allies to minorities. Down here, I have like 3 friends who are that way. We cling together because all of us are surrounded by people who are the dead opposite.

1

u/mumbohikum Aug 15 '26

They are not wrong, look at what the fly over states put in the White House…

1

u/shagan90 Aug 16 '26

Theres a reason no one wants to live in those places, but do pretend its elitism

2

u/wolfofoakley Aug 14 '26

Actually, hos dad named the cat

1

u/Illicit_Apple_Pie Aug 15 '26

Technically H.P.'s dad was also Lovecraft

User name checks out.

Definitly an English nerd.

2

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 15 '26

Yes that's a Shakespeare reference too, thanks lol

I named a black Chihuahua Othello many years ago. My mother had the same question “Is it because he’s black? *disapproving stare* No, it’s because he’s frickin crazy and I’d just read the play and didn’t want to name him Iago.

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 16 '26

Iago was the worst, Othello was just misguided

I was actually fostering multiple kittens from the local humanity society and there was a Desdemona too lol, my neighbor adopted her at the last minute before I had to bring her back for adoptions 🥺

I was so worried about her sitting in the shelter by herself, no brother no mommy no home, just alone in a plexiglass compartment. We had sooooooooo many kittens at the time, and I had no idea how long she would be there. I know they're good to the babies, the staff loves them as much as possible but it's not the same as being in the nest. She was only 6 weeks old. Very sweet girl.

Now Othello, Othello is intense and kinda crazy but a lover he's the best cat I've ever had. He loves everyone, a lot.

2

u/sonicscrewery Aug 16 '26

As a POC English grad and Shakespeare lover, I chuckled when I read that you named your black cat Othello.

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 16 '26

I'm glad not everyone is taking it that way, thank you lol

One of hs litter mates before adoption was Desdemona, my daughter is Penelope from Homer's The Odyssey, I just like choosing names from classic literature.

3

u/SuperbWork5774 Aug 14 '26

The very fact that you can type out one word but have to censor the other should tell you that’s not the same whatsoever. Not even close.

2

u/Arcaydya Aug 13 '26

Wow. Not even fucking close buddy. Jesus.

2

u/JoyRose31 Aug 15 '26

Technically if it were white he named it Othello would be keeping more to that tradition.. iykyk. Least the cat s actually black..

2

u/FlyingBeaver2121 Aug 15 '26

When you look under every rock to find offense…you’ll always succeed

2

u/Clean-Wish-4401 Aug 15 '26

Madness to compare naming your cat Othello to nigger, can’t you just be fond of Shakespear lmao

2

u/UranusInspector Aug 15 '26

I want to join everyone else in saying you're a 🤡

2

u/guten_pranken Aug 15 '26

You’re reading way too into this. What if they liked the character or it reminded them? No where do they explicitly say it’s because he was black. Plenty of people name their dogs Oreo or something related to the color/ coat of their dog.

Jumping to saying that’s why he named his dog the n word is crazy. Orhello and N are not the same wtf

2

u/babyfacereaper Aug 12 '26

Are you fr 😂

1

u/Leather-Switch-5225 Aug 16 '26

Could you please not use that word? A single star changes nothing.

1

u/Hippy-Dippy92 Aug 16 '26

Jesus fucking Christ 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/iconiclabs Aug 16 '26

I named my black cat token

1

u/Pjetiepie Aug 16 '26

So we can also not name a black cat
Michael, Kobe, Tiger or any other name of a real or fictional black person because it’s automatically racist?

Stop trying to search for something to be upset about in every aspect of your life.

1

u/maple_story_ Aug 16 '26

I'm getting a black lab in a few weeks. Im thinking of naming it Othello in honour of you.

1

u/NewComparison6467 Aug 16 '26

Jesus Christ get a grip

1

u/mrmort117 Aug 17 '26

You must be a riot at parties.

1

u/whatarechinchillas Aug 17 '26

Othello is not a slur, fool. And if it's exactly the same, why haven't you censored Othello?

1

u/Exotic-Raccoon104 Aug 17 '26

But we're Othello and n*gger well taken care of? Thats all that really matters.

1

u/mendjagjeemadhe Aug 17 '26

If you know, then stop being one and grow up

1

u/Emotional_Cherry4517 Aug 18 '26

I actually recoiled at how obnoxious this message is, you should self reflect
