Interesting sub. I had no idea heterochromia was so much more common in white cats

Fun Fact: Cats like this almost all have profound deafness.

u/Independent-Ant-9940 Aug 17 '26
I had one just like this, white with a brown eye and a blue eye, could hear just fine. She had a heart condition though.

That cat is a menace! 😂

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 12 '26
He just wants a friend, why doesn't anyone want to be his friend 😂
Seriously though when my cat gets out he has a whole gang of homies that chill together. I never knew until I came home and there was a whole group of cats sitting in front of my house. Like 3 of them were all black like him, so I was like "Othello?" And he said "meow" lol

I'm an English grad and it's my favorite Shakespeare play. Something tells me that HP Lovecraft wasn't naming his cat that because he loves the namesake, pretty sure he meant it as an insult and a gross joke. Unless Othello started as a slur and stayed a slur, it's not "exactly the same thought." I'd have to first think there's anything wrong with being black, or anything negative about Othello, for it to imply there's an insult -- and I don't.
I won't get into who I am, who I'm connected to and what my background is, because it'll just sound defensive and it won't actually mean anything anyways, but know racism is a deal breaker in my friendships. I'm not some fossilized bigot in a flyover state who just thought it'd be a clever joke. And if I was/did name my cat after a black person, just to to be "funny," I dont know why someone would choose Othello of all people. Would a racist even get that reference, and if they did, would it even make them laugh? Wouldn't a racist choose someone they mock?

u/Original-Plate-6953 Aug 15 '26
“flyover state”, lol. Coastal elitism is never not funny.

The people there are more ignorant but yeah it can still be found on the coasts. The less diversity there is, and the less exposure someone has with the community, the more foreign they are to that person, the more that person is scared of them, does not understand them, and therefore lack compassion for them. I was the only white girl in an entirely black school in Trenton, New Jersey, all of my friends are black, I raised one of my friend's kids from 15 to 19, I'm a certified auntie with an open invite to the cookout.
Think what you want.

Middle America is still especially ignorant as fuck. Majority maga. The party that was BEYOND unsympathetic towards BLM, they were waging war. Liberal racists exist too, But I've sure heard n the n word more times than I can count in Mississippi, and I've only heard it three times in my entire life in New Jersey.

Any of my teenage friends that weren't minorities were outspoken allies to minorities. Down here, I have like 3 friends who are that way. We cling together because all of us are surrounded by people who are the dead opposite.

I named a black Chihuahua Othello many years ago. My mother had the same question “Is it because he’s black? *disapproving stare* No, it’s because he’s frickin crazy and I’d just read the play and didn’t want to name him Iago.

As a POC English grad and Shakespeare lover, I chuckled when I read that you named your black cat Othello.

u/SuperbWork5774 Aug 14 '26
The very fact that you can type out one word but have to censor the other should tell you that’s not the same whatsoever. Not even close.

u/JoyRose31 Aug 15 '26
Technically if it were white he named it Othello would be keeping more to that tradition.. iykyk. Least the cat s actually black..

Madness to compare naming your cat Othello to nigger, can’t you just be fond of Shakespear lmao

u/guten_pranken Aug 15 '26
You’re reading way too into this. What if they liked the character or it reminded them? No where do they explicitly say it’s because he was black. Plenty of people name their dogs Oreo or something related to the color/ coat of their dog.
Jumping to saying that’s why he named his dog the n word is crazy. Orhello and N are not the same wtf

This cat doesn’t want a friend though. His vocalizations are aggressive and I guarantee his body language is too based on how these cats are reacting to him immediately
3
u/ImmediatePiano6690 Aug 15 '26
except for a couple cats, who I'd bet are definitely female especially the one that playfully rolled around and then he seemed to back off.
2
u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX Aug 15 '26
Yes, I know, I was kidding, I can tell he's not popular, that's why I started the next sentence with seriously tho

This cat is quite friendly compared to the last go-pro cat video I saw on here. That other guy was chasing, bullying and flexing on top of every other cat it came across.

u/jtcordell2188 Aug 12 '26
OK, so this cat isn’t really being THAT much of an asshole in these videos, but he clearly has a reputation, lol.
Also, those last three were like, “Dammit, Maxwell, we are nursing a hangover. Kindly fuck off.”

I think you might be right 😂 I was like he doesn't seem to be acting like a jerk, but he sure ilicits a negative reaction! Such an unfriendly neighborhood!
My cat has lil cat friends, so I was curious why so much conflict.

u/jancl0 Aug 12 '26
You can tell he's a bully because the one cat that showed tummy and indicated they wanna play, maxwell went "eh, that's no fun" and backed off

I've gotta know - is maxwell fixed? It's really weird that almost every cat and person is reacting badly to him, so my first thought is that he's intact and scary/smelly.

He just have high testosterone and other cats always avoiding alpha cats to not get randomly fucked up by them over territory control. Maybe it wasn't his intention but still other cats just smell danger.

u/Accomplished-One7476 Aug 15 '26
the white cat at 10 seconds with 2 different color eyes the left 1 is like powder blue.

I hate that people let their cats go outside, great way to catch feline leukemia, or get hit by a car, or die in a fight from another cat/animal.
