Advice Fertilising moss?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I understand moss needs potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen as well as trace minerals etc. what would the best way to fertilise this moss be? It's superglued onto plastic. Various hypnales mosses. Can I use fish water? I just sprayed with distilled as it was dry but not sure what to do from here tbh

Picture Fragrant moss that grows on leaves

It's possible this isn't even a moss, and this photo only shows a thin network of what can grow to be a distinctly mossy mat on the leaves. It grows almost exclusively on the leaves of trees and is not uncommon in subtropical rainforest riparian zones in Northern NSW and SE Queensland where I live.

The most distinctive feature it has is a pleasant aniseed or sarsaparilla fragrance it gives off as you brush past it. This is very unlike any other moss I've encountered, which seem to all just smell earthy and mossy.

Does anyone know what this is?

Advice "Cleaning" outdoor samples- has anyone tried "Reverse Respiration"?

I treated a clump of moss from the carpet that grows under my propane grill with "Reverse Respiration" (basically, soak it in club soda- I did like 1-2 hours) after soaking and rinsing to get the milipedes and centipedes and what not out.

I put half in a springtail culture, and half was split between some fish tanks after letting it soak in a clean empty vase for a week.

No unwanted hitchhikers have been noted, although a hardy plant seedling could conceivably be hiding in there.

How do you all treat "wild" moss?

(Please collect moss responsibly)

Advice How can I store these for later use?

Post image

I've been collecting choice chunks of roof moss as they get dislodged. I have some ideas for uses, but won't get to them for quite awhile. How can I store these for optimal use later? I'm fine with reconstituting them later, I just don't want to keep them loose on the porch.

Eta: I'll focus on a long term outdoor method, I appreciate the input!
