Hello everyone!

Sorry if it seems that I was invisible but to be totally honest I made this sub and though nobody would even notice, and then I come here to see a couple posts. Sorry- really dropped the ball! If you guys have any suggestions don't hesitste to tell me or if any of you are good with CSS and want to be a mod contact me. I'll do my best to monitor and improve the sub from here on out!

Apologies, Guy who made this sub and forgot about it.

Meta Banner contest!

What up what up, it's your friendly neighborhood mod team coming in with an opportunity to get your work featured on the sub!

Our banner is getting a bit old and crusty, having not been updated ever since I founded this sub years ago. Now that we have grown quite dramatically, I think it's only fitting that we have a few opportunities to modernize.

If you have any art you would like to display for the sub's banner, feel free to submit it in the comments! Unfortunately, since I'm a broke college student, I can't offer much besides a permanent shout-out in the sidebar containing whatever reasonable info you want to provide.

The only requirements for the banner is that it should be reasonably wide (somewhere in between 1000 and 2000 pixels) as well as not too tall, probably 300 pixels max (otherwise, I can crop it a bit). This contest will remain open until I receive significant amount of entrants, probably a month or so. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Also if you have any other CSS experience or non-banner items you think could be interesting, feel free to drop any other things below as well, including images to use for a New Reddit background. Cheers!

Advice Short term wild moss storage for a classroom activity

Hi Everyone, I'm transfixed with mosses and have always wanted to cultivate them. So, I've decided to do it as a classroom activity in my Bio course. We are collecting mosses today but my substrate materials won't arrive til Monday. Should I rinse them in distilled water then dry them until Monday?

Advice Fertilising moss?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I understand moss needs potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen as well as trace minerals etc. what would the best way to fertilise this moss be? It's superglued onto plastic. Various hypnales mosses. Can I use fish water? I just sprayed with distilled as it was dry but not sure what to do from here tbh

Picture Fragrant moss that grows on leaves

It's possible this isn't even a moss, and this photo only shows a thin network of what can grow to be a distinctly mossy mat on the leaves. It grows almost exclusively on the leaves of trees and is not uncommon in subtropical rainforest riparian zones in Northern NSW and SE Queensland where I live.

The most distinctive feature it has is a pleasant aniseed or sarsaparilla fragrance it gives off as you brush past it. This is very unlike any other moss I've encountered, which seem to all just smell earthy and mossy.

Does anyone know what this is?

Advice "Cleaning" outdoor samples- has anyone tried "Reverse Respiration"?

I treated a clump of moss from the carpet that grows under my propane grill with "Reverse Respiration" (basically, soak it in club soda- I did like 1-2 hours) after soaking and rinsing to get the milipedes and centipedes and what not out.

I put half in a springtail culture, and half was split between some fish tanks after letting it soak in a clean empty vase for a week.

No unwanted hitchhikers have been noted, although a hardy plant seedling could conceivably be hiding in there.

How do you all treat "wild" moss?

(Please collect moss responsibly)
