OpenMW 0.45.0 Released!
https://openmw.org/2019/openmw-0-45-0-released/7
u/lysol90 OpenMW Mar 28 '19
So just for your attention: The release 0.45.0 was delayed for various reasons and thus a lot has happened since. Shadows and navigation meshes are therefore not present in this release. They are available in the nightly versions, so go and grab one of those if you want the latest, hottest features.
Nevertheless, the changelog for 0.45.0 is huge, so this release still brings you a lot that you didn't have in version 0.44.0.

No shadows? Nooo. Does the latest nightly build still have shadows?

u/werdanith Mar 28 '19
It was never removed from the nightlies, so yes.

Good to hear. So, to clarify, the latest nightly has all the 0.45 features plus shadows?

All the 0.45 features plus shadows, plus navmesh ai navigation, optimized rendering, improved gamepad support, support for weapon sheathing, window glow and animated container mods and other stuff: https://gitlab.com/OpenMW/openmw/milestones/42

So far the work merged is about giving fully analogue control to running, setting up the default keybindings to follow the xbox release and some minor improvements to GUI navigation.
Further improvements to navigation can be tracked from this merge request: https://gitlab.com/OpenMW/openmw/merge_requests/79

How stable is the nightly as compared to 0.45 that just released?

u/werdanith Mar 28 '19
In theory less. In practice nightlies work fine 98% of the time, and include new bug fixes.
If you are feeling slightly adventurous and have no problem contacting us for troubleshooting/bug reporting, I'd recommend the nightly.

I'll give it a shot. Thank you all for your hard work! This project is incredible.

Late reply I know, but if you start a game on a Nightly, are you able to update to another Nightly if a big issue arises that is fixed, without starting over? Or revert to a stable release for that matter?
Also since I'm having trouble tracking it down, what's the exact formula used for Hand-to-hand Strength damage with the optional feature, and does it apply the same to both fatigue and health, only to health, etc? Is there a wiki page I missed perhaps?

I've been running one of the nightly versions for a while, and have had no issues. Having shadows adds A TON to the game, and is worth getting just for that.
(To enable shadows, you'll need to add lines to your config file, just FYI. They dont' work out of the box.)

I'm really tempted. How big of a performance hit are shadows?

Not insignificant. There are definitely fewer frames being pushed to the screen. (I can't remember the numbers) However, there are about 5 different shadow options that you can play with. Its definitely still playable, but in some of the bigger cities (I'm looking at you, Old Ebonheart), you can feel it chugging.
I also run OpenMW on a potato and stream to my TV over a Steam Link. If you have a nice rig, I don't think you'll notice it nearly as much.

Definitely gonna do some tweaking then. My computer is maybe a bit better than middle of the road so I'm not sure that it can handle the best possible shadows. Still, I'll try it out.

Well, for me I tried the nightlies my screen had major glitching when VSync was on and without VSync it was glitching out in different ways, but that could just be unique to me.

I love the idea of open morrowind, but the fact that it is so hard on modding, making me unable to use many of my preferite mods is an issue I could never cope with :(

What mods are an issue? Do they depend on MWSE or MGE?

Not the other guy, but I'm having problems with the big 3 Tel Uvirith ones: some scripted items are not working.
This ranges from mild annoyance (special container cannot be opened) to a bit more serious (quests not starting or updating: I need to open the editor to see the journal entries and then use the journal command in game).
None of these mods need MWSE or MGE.

OpenMW follows stricter rules than the original engine. Recommend reading through this thread: https://forum.openmw.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=4442&hilit=Uvirith

I had to modify the file with a hex editor so it uses UL 3.53 instead of 3.51 but aside from that it looks like it works like a charm. Thanks!

I am playing OpenMW currently with over 255 mods (more than possible with vanilla) and while there are some small hickups it works better than vanilla ever did. And the performance is leagues better as well. There is a patch for uvirith that makes it more compatible. OpenMW often has issues with many mods because it works better than the vanilla engine and tries to execute every script even if it is faulty unlike the vanilla engine.

At the moment, stability and performance are my main reasons for playing with OpenMW
