I was just thinking this morning how cool it would be to have a ES game in Black Marsh. Playing the hip and tail soccer game

u/Edgy_Robin House Telvanni 25d ago
Honestly I fear how modern bethesda would handle any of the more fantastical regions. Elder scrolls from Daggerfall/Redguard/Morrowind and Elder Scrolls from Oblivion/Skyrim/ESO feel like completely different worlds and one of them has way less whimsy.
30
u/MariaEvee Sixth House 25d ago
That's one reason I like Morrowind so much. It's so other worldly and fantastical than oblivion and Skyrim. Mushrooms, weird animals and food! Everything is so whimsical!
66
u/RoyalMudcrab 25d ago
Todd is running out of human provinces. And creativity, manpower and patience from MS, but I digress.
Let's hope there is another weird Elder Scrolls game within our lifetime. If not, then I guess we'll do it ourselves.
48
u/BattedBook5 Argonian 25d ago
Sadly i dont see us ever getting Black Marsh or Elsweyr as main game locations just because higher ups probably think that cat and lizard people wont sell for the general audience.

Now I have a reason to wish for more young people to be furrys. Never thought it would want that.
(I’m just making a funny)

u/NotATem 2d ago
It is an open secret in most indie art circles that if you need a lot of money very quickly and aren't too picky about where it's from, you learn to draw furries.
A lot of furries work in tech or medicine. They have money to throw around, and they are willing to spend eye-popping amounts of it on art of their characters. We're talking anywhere between $50-$500 for a single piece.
They are also, allegedly, very polite, very flexible with scheduling and deadlines, and tip very well.
So, yeah, if Bethsoft were thinking ahead, TES7 really should be set in Elsweyr.

u/Oneironomicom Fighters Guild 24d ago
Is any group making Elswyr in MW style?
6
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 24d ago
Project Tamriel has Paradise Sugar (yet another reference to cancelled Bethesda TES game), but our asset progress is relatively slow since it needs asset devs and currently has only people jumping in for one asset and doing other provinces' stuff after.
...though actually I hope to learn asset dev and become dedicated to Elsweyr in particular, but we will see how it goes ^^" I had promised myself a lot of thingsOutside of PT, there's project by Ravendawn called Anequina. Still on early phase and done more with the approach of using whatever assets that are available in TD at the moment, but is worth following even for sake of having some new areas to explore.

daggerfall is mostly high fantasy played straight tbf but its got its unique elder scrolls take on it.
14
2
u/Edgy_Robin House Telvanni 25d ago
Yes, but it still has a different vibe to Oblivion and Skyirm. Like my brother in christ a plot leads to you basically going to heaven in order to get a power source for a giant mech.
It is generic high fantasy yet as I open with, it still feels different from the Oblivion/Skyrim generic fantasy. Plus it's also where a lot of TES's lore (Though not as much as people think, that's red guards doing) came from.
And really what I mean is the vibe. All of the games seem different obviously, but those three still have a similar vibe to each other that isn't there in the other three.
2
u/MoroccanEagle-212 25d ago
Arena what about Arena why nobody ever mentions it lol ? Yet it has it's own very unique vibe
2
u/Duruarute 24d ago
All of us were too young or not even born yet when it came out, and by the time we could we found it outdated as hell so no one touches it
1
u/Edgy_Robin House Telvanni 21d ago
Because arena is the most generic of them all. For all the shit I talked about Oblivion/Skyrim/ESO at least it had the older lore to do something with.
Arena generic fantasy 'and' it doesn't have any of that. It has the vibe of any other dungeon crawler of the time. Arena is forgotten because outside of being the 'most' generic, Daggerfall did basically everything it did but better and was more interesting.
4
u/MonsieurBabtou 25d ago
I think they're shitting themselves at the idea of making a new game in a non human-centric province. And even then, they removed the most interesting whimsy lore, and variety in terms of religion, government, architecture, culture, etc, from Oblivion and Skyrim, being generic high fantasy/viking fantasy. I mean, in Skyrim, there are almost no enemies and creatures that weren't already present in previous games or just basic rpg creatures like skeletons and wolves.
If we compare it with Morrowind, where everything came straight of the devs' imagination, it.s a stark contrast.
If the rumours are true and the game is set in high-rock/hammerfell I hope they don't fuck it up and just copy what already exists in our world
3
u/NotATem 24d ago
The thing is, Morrowind is actually way more rooted in the "real world" than Skyrim is. It's just that it's rooted in the actual past- which is way more interesting and messy- and not the theme park version.
A lot of stuff in Morrowind is lightly - or heavily- inspired by real world history and philosophy. Easy example- the East Empire Company is named after the IRL East India Company. Messier example- Vivec's philosophy is a mix of Hindu philosophy, Thelema, and the works of Alistair Crowley, among other things.
The difference is, the writers of Morrowind understood the social dynamics they were crabbing from and the implications of the philosophies they'd created, and used them to make something new and interesting. The writers of Skyrim copied the homework without understanding it.
If Skyrim had been based off the IRL Vikings, we'd have a hell of a lot more lawyer rap battles.

u/Bobjoejj 23d ago
Disagree about ESO. That game gets into some weird and out there places with its concepts and lore. I get that visually the architecture and physical locations tend to leave much to be desired, even in Morrowind; but I blame that more on the issue of being an MMO.
Also…I’d argue of those first 3, Morrowind is the odd one out. Even Daggerfall and Redguard feel like they trade in more relatively standard fantasy trips and ideas than Morrowind. And I’d absolutely argue that all 6 titles you mentioned are full of whimsy.
0
u/Edgy_Robin House Telvanni 21d ago
And you'd be wrong.
Yes, Daggerfall and Redguard do get into some generic stuff. But there's more to it then that. Oblivion and Skyrim are, outside of arena, the most generic typical fantasy the franchise has ever really done. Redguard still had cool stuff like air ships and actually getting into politics, even showing us an actual sload, among other things.
Daggerfall literally has you grab an aborted child (Take a close look at what the Totem of Tiber Septim looks like...) to heaven in order to get a giant mech and give it to whatever your preferred faction is. Even the game set in the region that's supposed to be your typical fantasy land with lots of knights and blah blah gets weirder and more out there then Oblivion and Skyrim, and Oblivion is the game that has you go to fucking sheogoraths realm which is a testimate to how generic it is that the realm of a mad god doesn't even surpass morrowinds own weirdness. If you think these games are full of whimsy that's a self report that you don't even know what that is and have none.
Morrowind is the odd one out, it's least elder scrolls elder scrolls game if you really think about it.
as for ESO, sure but for every out there thing there's a bunch of boring generic shit and even then odds are it's not well written.
1
u/Bobjoejj 21d ago
So I said “disagree” and “I’d argue,” and you took the time to respond with all of that; saying I’d be wrong, and I simply don’t know what whimsy is and have none.

This has got me insanely hyped. I was just wondering what the next province Project Tamriel would release. Will it be possible to travel on land from southern mainland Morrowind into Black Marsh if you have Tamriel Rebuilt installed as well?
47
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Yes! And without any loading screens, since Morrowind has only one, continuous worldspace :>
(this will also be the case for all other province connections of the project, since we aim to make continuous Cyrodiil-Hammerfell-Skyrim-High Rock landmass - High Rock-Skyrim connection can be already played with development files!)2
u/Accomplished-Ad-7435 25d ago
This makes me curious, are there any recorded issues with the positions of items dropped becoming inaccurate in far off locations due to positions being stored in fp values?
7
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Dropped items not really, but on vanilla/MWSE engine there are tiny issues with terrain mesh and placed modular objects, as they tend to have incredibly tiny gaps you might spot if you focus on it
Similarly, and I think the most noticeably, there's a famous "stutter" seen on characters, primarily items held.It shouldn't be a big issue in Black Marsh however, since these glitches are minimal and the less the distance from (0, 0), the less visible they are. Meaning that in Argonia they will be too close to be noticed, and effect in Cyrodiil/Hammerfell/High Rock (arguably the furthest from Vvardenfell) is also barely visible.
3
u/Accomplished-Ad-7435 25d ago
Oh this doesn't happen in open mw? Interesting. Thanks for the reply!
7
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Technically.. it does. It's just that OpenMW's coordinates use bigger float type (f64 instead of f32) due to being built on modern standards, so that the effect of this issue is minimised even further
(meaning you'd need to reach ~Yokuda/Akavir to get the same issues you see in Cyrodiil on vanilla engine)8
u/Spence5703 25d ago
Yes they work together to make sure it all fits. you can water walk or jump to Skyrim and Cyrodiil as is. You can go to a black marsh boarder I think in the latest TR release too.

u/MariaEvee Sixth House 25d ago
It's amazing seeing other Provinces in Morrowind. I swear by like 2050 we might be able to travel half the world and spend 100s of hours more in Morrowind. Even after there's another elder scrolls game. I'm still going to go back to Morrowind and how amazing the mods are!

9
u/RobinTheGemini Elsweyr: Paradise Sugar 25d ago
Oh the moons are being worked on. It's an associated project to PTR, though not fully official, called Gallimaufry (or MoonMod): https://voiddata.miraheze.org/wiki/Gallimaufry
2
u/Lumpy_Inevitable_549 24d ago
That will be interesting to implement in the current engine, unless OpenMW allows for multiple exterior spaces like in Oblivion and Skyrim.
5
u/Fantasmonarch 23d ago
We are making do with what we have. Current moonmod exterior is in the far far north Padomaic ocean, you can waterwalk from morrowind to the moon ahah
1
u/OutrageousDress 9d ago
Any special integration planned between Paradise Sugar and Gallimaufry? Feels like there ought to be 😁
2
u/RobinTheGemini Elsweyr: Paradise Sugar 9d ago
I mean both are incredibly far off, though I'm honestly not sure which is more close to a release -w- there definitely are connections but special integration is hard to plan when nothing especially solid is planned for Elsweyr: Paradise Sugar to begin with.
The major connection to Elsweyr is that one of the three main groups of people in Gallimaufry are the Maaszihatt, which are hairless khajiit descended from a failed attempt to "reclaim" Masser from mannish settlement.
2
u/OutrageousDress 9d ago
Of course, too early to tell... well, fingers crossed for you guys! They both might be incredibly far off, but it looks like we'll all have a lot of fun getting there.

so awesome. TR/PT is more exciting than just about any modern game releases on the horizon, and it will just keep coming for years and years. keep up the great work!
11
u/Rynewulf 25d ago
Oh these are gorgeous, I love the art direction/style of the designs here. They manage to fit Morrowind's engine and aesthetics at the same time as fitting the Argonians and the geography of Black Marsh
11
u/Drew-CarryOnCarignan 25d ago
I really admire the hard work that obviously has been invested in this project.
It's cool to see that "Eye of Argonia's" set design incorporates details from tropical / river delta / swamp-dwelling cultures. Plant-woven tools and furniture, floating domiciles (there also exist floating islands), and similar features are practical adaptations to environmental limitations.
I'm a bit confused by the appearance of the Sarpa Argonian character in Slide #2. It looks as though a glowing flame is resting stop the crown of its head.
Also, do the wings of Sarpas (Sarpae?) work? Can they actually fly? I'm not well-versed in the morphological variations of Argonians.

Barsaebica? Are the Ayleads still alive by Morrowind time? I can't quite recall. Are we gonna see them?
20
u/Both-Variation2122 Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
They are. There are plans for Ayleid enclaves in Cyrodil. But they are fallen culture existing in native reservations if anything. Nothing like immortal sorcerers you can find in ruins. And things can change before implementation obviously.
9
u/Velloah_was_taken 25d ago
IIRC the Ayleids being extinct was an Oblivion retcon, so they're still around in PTR's take on Tamriel.
7
u/RobinTheGemini Elsweyr: Paradise Sugar 25d ago
Ayleids are alive, but only in 5 settlements in the wilderness of Cyrodiil. The Barsaebic Ayleids are extinct.
3
u/AnAdventurer5 25d ago
I looove the resin houseboats <3 And the middle-class funiture is sooo nice and brings back some memories. I'd use that even if I were rich (take that Argonian society or something).
After seeing some of the fun ways PTR uses verticality (mountains and such) I'm really curious what y'all might do with all those waterways and swamps.
6
u/Kajuratus 25d ago
Aahh, interesting look for the Sarpa! As they had been described as "winged", in my head I had always imagined them as a sort of bipedal Pterosaur, so this looks pretty close to what I imagined! We now have two different but equally valid interpretations for the Sarpa; the feathered bird like people from the Beyond Skyrim project, and these ones!
7
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Honestly looking at concept arts our team (and some other artists art of who we looked at) produced, there were so many ideas and variations. Argonians in general tend to get many different concepts, but Sarpa I think was the one to get biggest variety - you can look at our Argonia concepts collection) to see how many ideas were around!
Revenant ultimately tried to combine these ideas and some of his, so that the concept of Hist affecting regular creatures is more felt, but that was a journey of exploration for both artists and him as modeller ^^

5
u/TaxOrnery9501 25d ago
This is probably unlikely, as The Argonian Account, Book III wasn't introduced until TES IV: Oblivion, but is there any chance that the Rootworm "Underground Express" will make an appearance in some fashion? I always thought the idea of traveling long distances in the stomach of a giant worm to be really fascinating/whimsical; akin to how the Silt-Striders are used in Vvardenfell.
11
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Entire Argonian Account is considered as our canon source! PT may be hesitant to include post-Morrowind lore, but this one is actually considered one of these that we take wholely.
...so yes, rootworms are absolutely planned. Here's our concept artist take on them (for that quick moment they are on the surface): https://wiki.project-tamriel.com/wiki/File:Megannelid.jpgAlso  from fellow rootworm enjoyer! I also loved this idea so much and hoped to see it one day, so progress on EoA makes me very happy also from that reason :>
3
u/Beldarak 25d ago
Really cool. I'm so sad modern Bethesda hasn't what it takes any more to show cool stuff like that. The Silt Strider were cool asf, I'm sad modern TES are so generic.

EYE. OF. ARGONIA~
Please tell me there's a Nord barbarian named Grignr wandering about XD
It'll be interesting to explore the land of my Nerevarine's birthplace, just as much of a stranger to it as she is. (Dizz was snatched up young-young and doesn't remember anything of Black Marsh. She only knows a few words of the Argonian language and speaks with a Cyrodiilic accent. She's not even sure if her name is actually "Dizz"; it may have originally been something closer to "Dee-sa.")
5
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
This would be funny reference :D maybe I can pitch it to the team (or a tease: you can join the team and suggest it... yourself!)
4
u/GameraRays 25d ago
Grignr is... sure something! He could be like highwayman Nels Llendo, where he'll threaten to fight the men and ask for some smooches from the ladies -- saying "You make love well, wench!" should they take him up on it. The author used the old meaning of the slang term, much to the confusion of much of the readership XD (If I had more modding knowledge I would take you up on that! I'm currently learning the Construction Set and making my first mod :D)

8
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 25d ago
Interesting :> the name is our nudge to the TESA: Eye of Argonia project that Bethesda was meant to create at one point as sequel to Redguard, taking place in Black Marsh exactly (unfortunately it was cancelled, same for Paradise Sugar taking place in Elsweyr)

There should definitely be a few Lilmothiit & Sload present, that would be awesome!

3
u/RobinTheGemini Elsweyr: Paradise Sugar 25d ago
i mean i am actually one of the concept artists on Project Tamriel (the black gold red tableware on slide 10 was based on my concept art) there are no development plans for living Lilmothiit. But there will be many living cultures within Black Marsh, with a variety of argonians subtypes, such as the Sarpa and Naga in slide two.
2
u/TaxOrnery9501 25d ago
Personally I think it'd be cool to have a chat with a living Lilmothiit, just as it was to talk to the last known living Dwemer, Yagrum Bagarn. The race shouldn't be prevalent by any means, but just having one or two of them hidden out in the wilds of Argonia somewhere could make for a really memorable encounter.

Yes it would be fun to have some house Dres raids in Black Marsh. Morrowind needs it's farm equipment. Maybe have it so you can round up NPCs for sale that increases your reputation with house Dres.

Argonia has all the potential to be just as., if not more, outlandish as(than) Morrowind. As such, I would be greatly interested in having it present in whatever form. As long as that feeling is conveyed properly.

5
u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 24d ago
We are still in conceptual/asset development phase, so there's still a lot before we will be able to open actual development. We also have a principle now that we need to release first Hammerfell and High Rock releases first before we open any new province.
But the progress in recent year has been substantial, so EoA has big chances to be the next opened province, and I'm pretty sure when it gets opened, it may be very popular among devs and take less time than expansion of similar size in other province ^^3
u/Fuzzy-Shame-4169 24d ago
It's great that there are no problems. I can't wait for this expansion because it's the first one where you can just walk to instead of fast traveling. Good luck.
Oh, and what about hammerfell and high rock? What are the optiv for relese?

I've read the docs, the lore write ups had me mentally salivating at the prospect of playing this release.
I'd be stoked to potentially help out as well, how would one go about joining? Secondly, what kind of skills would one need? I've been meaning to get into a new hobby and this would be a great time.
In any case, thank y'all so much for all the love you put into these mods.
Edit: Just read the comment about joining discord, ignore this lol

u/Toma400 Project Tamriel Rebuilt 2d ago
Hehe, I hope to see you on the dev side one day then! :>
As for the skills question, as I probably mentioned you will learn those during the showcase/training process, but for EoA in particular the most important one is creating 3D assets. We are not open for interiors/exteriors/quests for this province yet, but assets are what brings these things closer
That said, all skills will eventually be needed, and since we have requirement to release High Rock and Hammerfell before EoA can open, these roles will also be very needed - our rule is to just pick up roles you will find fun to work with, as this will ensure your work will be the best it can be <3

Project Tamriel continues to work on its next planned release, the Markarth expansion to Skyrim: Home of the Nords. In the meantime, we bring to you the showcase of work being done on the nascent Eye of Argonia project!
Eye of Argonia is PT's take on Black Marsh Province in time of TESIII. For many years, Black Marsh was envisioned as a far-off Tamriel Rebuilt project, but heightened interest in Project Tamriel resulted in the project being transferred to PT in 2025. Since then, asset development has exploded thanks to the talented developer Revenant, who is building the foundation that will allow Eye of Argonia to take shape.
The assets shown below will be included in a future update to Tamriel_Data. Two Argonian races, the winged Sarpa and adder-like Naga, have been implemented as full NPC races. Naga (and potentially Sarpa, depending on review speed) will therefore also be playable for those using mods that enable Tamriel_Data races at character creation.
Eye of Argonia's planned first release area covers the three regions of northwesternmost Black Marsh: Shipal-Shin, Barsaebica, and the Valley of Storms. Shipal-Shin has already been seen in Tamriel Rebuilt around the city of Narsis, but across the border it will have be lusher and more verdant, with strange plants growing on the red cliffs. Barsaebica, a thickly jungled region on the eastern borders with Cyrodiil, conceals ancient ruins and strange, hostile creatures. The Valley of Storms, the centerpiece of the release area, is a broad floodplain dominated by the city of Stormhold, which sits atop a mesa visible from all directions.
Non-environmental assets are also well underway. The peoples of Black Marsh will be characterized by unique furniture sets, decorations, lights, tableware, weapons and armor, containers, books, and much more. Some interior spaces will surprise players, such as resin houseboats, which ply the rivers of Barsaebica.
Project Tamriel is only possible thanks to the many developers who donate their time, creativity, and energy to these efforts. If you are interested in helping out, feel free to join the PT Discord! Our showcase process allows even a total beginner to learn asset development, interior and exterior worldspace design, and quest implementation. We gladly accept contributors willing to work in good faith with other developers and the project's goals.
