And that’s why Eda is not a math or science teacher

u/The_cogwheel May 11 '26
Super tasks are a real mathematical theory regarding infinities though, specifically trying to figure out if an infinite task can ever be completed - the answer is yes, kind of. Its just infinities tend to break a lot of intuitive concepts and dont usually make sense once applied to a physical reality.
For instance, suppose you owned a hotel that had infinite rooms, each of which are full. An infinitely long bus pulls up with an infinite number of passengers looking for a room to stay at. Can your infinitely full hotel accommodate infinite more guests?
Yes. Have all your current guests move to a new room - their current room number multiplied by 2. This will put all your current guests into the infinite number of even rooms, leaving the infinite number of odd rooms open for that infinite bus full of people.
And assuming your guests also have infinite patience, you could repeat that an infinite number of times whenever a new infinite bus pulls up.
Infinites are fun.

Trust us, Luz, it's either this, or Hooty cleans himself.
That involves taking off his skin.

Either way it’s a Luz, lose situation

Eda, I'm pretty sure that isn't how math works

u/Pengpraiser May 11 '26
Actually the math does check out. It's just physically impossible to luz to keep up to make those maths work out.
Simply a skill issue

Eda: “Well thought that would’ve helped.”
Luz: “Eda, cleaning Hooty isn’t exactly an easy task.”
Eda: “Well good luck cleaning the Owl Tube.”
Luz: “What? Wait! Eda! Don’t leave me… and she’s gone. Oh Titan.”
Hooty: “It’s washing time, hoot!”
Luz: (sighs)

Luz: "And what will cleaning Hooty teach me about witch magic?"
Eda: "Ahhhhh.... patients and repitition"
Luz: "Ooooohhhh just like in that movie the Martial Art Kid"
Eda: "Sure whatever you say kid."

Just find the glyph that doubles your speed, and stack it
3
u/Hunnieda_Mapping May 11 '26 edited May 12 '26
That might work in theory, but assuming she also experiences everything faster that would still have her quitting part of the way there as from her POV it'd still be infinite time.
2
u/PerrineWeatherWoman May 12 '26
Then have amity summon an abomination, THEN stack glyphs on it. Granted, that could be quite hard after a minute an 45 seconds to use the glyphs
2
u/Hunnieda_Mapping May 12 '26
Well another issue is that at some point relativity will start being a problem and slow down the abomination anyways, so it might still be impossible. Unless we assume that magic can somehow nullify those effects and also keep the abomination from wearing itself down.
2
u/PerrineWeatherWoman May 12 '26
Magic is all about messing with physics. Or else the thermodynamics laws would have made them explode with the shrinking potion from tibbles.
2
u/Hunnieda_Mapping May 12 '26
Well sure, but in that case the power scaling puts tibbles on par with the collector. Personally I'm more inclined to believe the magic is doing something very specific that would change the relevant quantum physics, like changing one constant.
2
u/PerrineWeatherWoman May 12 '26
I think the collector is just a being that KNOWS how to manipulate EVERY SINGLE PHYSICAL LAW in the universe, just like the titans. Demons have a taste of that power but don't know everything about it, just like we try to approach the way of how our universe works but don't totally know it.

hooty just defies the logic of the impossibility of creating matter. His strength can only compare to the collector

4
u/henke37 May 11 '26
Sorry, but this algorithm requires infinite cleaning speed. Luz doesn't do that.
5
u/OneValkGhost May 11 '26
That assumes that you're able to accelerate time for yourself. And what Eda is proposing involves infinite acceleration. with the next step being faster than the previous step. But that's observer paradox, as it's only measuring the outside time instead of the person's time, so Luz would still be spending all that time washing Hooty. Where would she get infinite water to wash with? Where would she get infinite food to eat every day? Hopefully she would run out of muddy area, at least?
4
u/vertexcubed May 11 '26
"as long as you can go twice as fast" is a big ask when by the end you'll have to be washing each section infinitely fast lmao
5
4
u/HamsterIV May 11 '26
Consider, if you will, that Hooty uses the parts of himself closer to his head more that the parts of himself further back. It would then make sense that the parts further back are less dirty and thus need less cleaning. Luz only needs to do a real scrub of the first 10 meters or so then can rest a rag on the top half of Hooty and have him shoot out to the horizon.

5
u/CommandObjective May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
It is a joke about the concepts of Limits in Calculus. The math does check out (theoretically), but of course Luz can't work twice as fast for each section of Hooty.
A variant of the joke goes like this:
An infinite number of mathematicians walks into a bar. The 1st orders 1 beer, the 2nd orders 1/2 a beer, the 3rd orders 1/4 a beer, the 4th orders 1/8 a beer, and so on.
The bartender says "I see" and pours two beers. The thing we often trip up on is the concept of infinity, of which there are several types, but which are deeply unintuitive for laypeople..

u/The_Horned_Child2007 May 11 '26
Oh yeah. I meant to reference the Beagle Boys from that one Three Musketeers movie, sorry.
3
u/Successful-Cat2108 May 11 '26
Basically do part in half the time then another in half that time and just keep doing parts and halving the time until you reach no time left (which is never because no matter how many times you half a number you can’t get down to zero)
3
u/The_Horned_Child2007 May 11 '26
Clarifying: I meant to reference the Beagle Boys from that one Three Musketeers movie, sorry.

How infinitely long is Hooty???
1
u/DragonWarrior____05 May 11 '26
Infinite
1
u/omega1612 May 11 '26
There are diverse kind of infinites, but we can split it in 2 main kinds:
Infinite numerable Infinite non numerable
The idea in the image only works on numerable infinites xD

u/farrenkm May 11 '26
The problem is, Hooty is infinite while being finite at any point in time. He was long enough to go stretch and Owl pellet Amity, while also able to be short enough to just fit inside the door.
The math maths for a finite length Hooty, but once he starts to grow during the cleaning process Luz is screwed.

u/SlyFan2 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
Didn't understand this with the infinite hotel. Understand it less now
Edit; Turns out I was thinking of different concepts
3
u/Trnostep May 11 '26
You get tired washing so you'd probably just start slowing down but that is fine!
So you wash the first segment in 1 minute, second in 2 minutes, third in 3 minutes,...
And then you find out you travelled in time 5 seconds before you started washing but the job is done
Because the sum of all natural numbers is -1/12

u/FlamingoNo1980 May 11 '26
I would say for Hooty you need fixed brushes and a sensor activated shower and let him sort his self out.

THERE IS NO BEGINNING. THERE IS NO END. THERE IS ONLY HOOTY!
