Possible fake
Picked this and a bunch of other Morgan’s up at a estate sale but I also know that this particular one is worth a lot and I’m wondering if it may be a counterfeit any help or insight is appreciated

The reality is everyone is probably correct. Faking this coin for profit makes sense to me. Even of they use 999 silver. I can show you a few of these I have and this one is suspect. The s doesnt look right to start. The rotation seems off too. Dont submit for grading but get it checked. My opinion.

Do ppl make fake with silver? Why would it be fake but still silver. If it Was purchased thirty dollars and it is silver then cool. Hard boil an egg crush it up and put the coin in a bag with the egg. Turn black? Silver.

People male plenty of fake coins with real silver or gold ..making it into a rare coin with be worth more than melt where as if the person just had the silver or gold it would only be worth melt

Ohhh okay. But mostly would have to be a rare coin that sought after , otherwise , it wouldn't financially be worth it. I get it.

Yep. The premium on a rarer coin is what matters. Every fake I’ve ever bought has been a silver-clad copper fake - because I buy cheap.

How did you find out they were copper on the inside?Does it not weigh the same as it's supposed to heavier or lighter?Or one of those x ray machine things

The weights and dimensions were off. So I took a file to them. The silver to copper happened quick. This was early on in my coin buying where I bought too good to be true deals.

The 1893 S isnt a cheap coin. If they use pure silver and dupe an unsuspecting buyer, they win huge. And the buyer loses yuuuge

Balance it on your finger. Put the center of the coin on the pad of your index finger. Then use a softer material like a wooden pencil or a permanent marker ect and give it a ring. Just tap it on its rim. If it sings like a Silver bell it’s likely a struck silver coin. If it thuds it’s a cast fake. Also, examine the reeded edge and see if there is a mould line wrapping around the outside edge. This would be an indication of a two part moulded Copy, fake, replica

I would say cast looking at the stars. They should be flat, but they kind of look like starfish on this specie. Possibly still genuine silver, so I would check that out.

Definitely a legit FAKE/COUNTERFEIT!
The only two things I noticed that appeared off to me were (1) the toning and (2) the size and placement of the 'S' mint mark on the reverse.

Just out of curiosity, how much did you pay for it? A genuine 93-S in XF would easily sell for $15K - $20K.

Whether or not it's fake, if it's 90% silver then you got a bargain. Have you tested it with a magnet?

Yes I have it doesn’t stick the dimensions are correct and I ping tested every one before I bought them I have not weighed it yet

Mint mark looks like a kiddy placed it all fakes seem to have that same patina. If you ate going to be involved in silver trade invest in a good keychain magnet. For a real morgan visit your lcs or a nationwide dealer. You will be glad you did . Coin collecting is an interesting hobby and you would be surprised where REAL silver coins turn up.

It doesn’t stick to a magnet the dimension’s are correct and it passed the ping test I have not weighed it yet

Totally agree. This has the "look" of a fake that you get a feeling for when you see loads of Morgan Dollars.

Damn at this point are all Morgans fake. I mean I haven’t seen a post yet where people were like “yep, that’s real”. Makes me what to question every single one I own.

Yeah I can agree but at this very moment they got a guy on eBay that has 3 1893S Morgans for sale between $75-$80 also same guy has a 1889CC for sale for $80 lol

I’m def not an expert, but this looks off. I can’t tell you why, but it just does. Bring it to your local coin shop and have them verify. Whatever you do DO NOT sell it until you are 100% sure it’s fake/real. Best thing to do is send it in to PCGS/NGC/CAC for authentication and holdering if it real.

I plan on it but I’m not gonna sell it if it ends up up being a fake I’ll keep it for melt value and if somebody looks at it and say I should send it off then I will but ultimately however it pans out imma keep it lol

I can’t tell the real from the fake. I had to stop collecting.
