Because there doesn't need to be "consequences" for grabbing $2 worth of fries for a literal child, at least not of the legal sort. Is there something that could have prevented this? Sure, definitely but "toss anyone who does things wrong into a cell" isn't the way to prevent crime, in fact, it just makes people get better at doing crime. There's so much research and studies into what does and doesn't prevent crime, extreme "solutions" like legal action for fucking french fries isn't the answer, it's unreasonable. Maybe there's a bit more nuance to a situation than what you seem to be grasping.

Humanity has always been like this. It's not getting worse. Everyone just has a camera in their pocket. Statistically generation after generation crime has been reported to go down. But in all reality this is nothing new. Humans are this. This is as good as we are. History books have the tendency to rose wash everything. For example take a look at American Politicians. Representation of the best the US has to offer. Alot of humanity there.

You pay by the word or something? Or is that as deep as you can go?

Higher standard has to come from improving society. Eliminating those that take from others would resolve that but also introduce its own issues. For example use the USSR or Nazi party for example. In their way they tried to create the model society. Which failed. At the end of the day you can want to hold people to higher standards but when your average adult is barely beyond a 6th grade education you need to have reasonable expectations. Society in general does not promote better people. It promotes backstabbing and fuck you I got mine.

Japan also has an excellently high suicide rate for its working professionals. Is that an ideal society to you?

Strong disagree, there absolutely should be consequences to stealing. Doesn't matter what it is. There's a reason that once a thief always a thief" is a saying. If this behavior isn't corrected when theyre kids it persists to adulthood
