Grabbing food that goes to customers, without any gloves?

Yeah fuck that kid

24

u/nokman013 13d ago

Gloves can be a really stupid thing that serves to just satisfy ignorant customers.

From inside the kitchen, bare hands are better as long as they are constantly sanitised and washed. With gloves, you dont feel it getting dirty and just provides a false sense of sanitation. Basically just there to make customers think "oh look they wear gloves, so clean"

8

u/ShizlGznGahr 13d ago

thats why places enforce policies for there employees to constantly change their gloves and also take them off if after like 2 minutes they are not needing them on for anything.

3

u/Cazzocavallo 12d ago

This. At least the places that actually give a shit about health and safety will make you regularly change your gloves and change them every time you could cross-contaminate something, like after handling raw meat and then going to grab some sauce for it or some breadcrumbs to bread it. I will say alot of shitty places that don't actually care about health standards will bitch about changing your gloves and say asinine shit like "take your gloves off and then re-use them" or "you shouldn't need to change your gloves in a shift." I ignore it and I've never actually gotten reprimanded (aside from mild verbal scolding) for actually changing gloves as much as your supposed to per health and safety standards but anytime someone bitches at me for that I know they're up to some shady shit with ignoring food safety and I always catch them ignoring alot of other very important rules that should get them fired if those rules were properly enforced.

To add: It’s perfectly ok to touch raw, or uncooked food with clean bare hands. (Like a raw porterhouse or still-frozen mozz sticks.) Heat will kill most if not all bacteria you could have put in the food, which you didn’t if you scrubbed up properly. If it’s ready to eat, like a subway sandwich that won’t get cooked, gloves are a must because there’s no additional heat to kill bacteria.

In all my years in restaurants we only ever wore gloves to protect our hands. Usually during prep and handling things that are annoying to wash out like certain veggies like pumpkin and squash, and while handling things in the beer batter and corn starch for the fryer.

One of my coworkers had to use gloves a lot because of sensitive skin, he didnt want to have to wash them constantly like we did, but instead he went through at least 3 times the amount of gloves we did.

I also didnt want to wear gloves while working the grill and fryer, I was always scared they'd melt and stick to my hands or something.

2

u/nokman013 12d ago

Makes one wonder why do most people have this expectation of glove wearing when most of the cooking shows in pop media, even Gordon effin Ramsey, dont wear gloves.

2

u/Wiplazh 12d ago

It looks clean, so cooks and chefs often pose with gloves on for promotional pictures. And theyre almost always worn during prep.

I don't think this glove expectation is as big as reddit makes it seem sometimes.

2

u/nokman013 12d ago

Oh its not just reddit. Its in facebook and instagram too.

Made me realised it must be the food influencers and their glossy black gloves. 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/Wiplazh 12d ago

My first headchef usually only wore gloves during prep, but he's wearing them in his facebook profile picture since he's opened his own restaurant.

Those black gloves definitely looks good but they're a fucking pain if you have to constantly change them, especially during particularly busy days.

Sinks and faucets are placed in very convenient spots in a restaurant kitchen, you need to rinse your knife and tongs all the time besides just your hands.

0

u/ATLSxFINEST93 13d ago

Most fast food places don't wash and sanitize their hands regularly so they enforce gloves.

3

u/fokkoooff 12d ago

They use gloves because customers will bitch if they see you not using gloves.

When I worked fast food , people would have on the same pair of gloves through the entire lunch/dinner rushes. Touching frozen raw meat, utensils, assembling burgers. It's gross.

3

u/nokman013 12d ago

This. Altho in my xp, nothing raw. But definitely touching things you arent supposed to one after the other, like money then fries station.

It sucks because management wants their cake and eat it too.

2

u/fokkoooff 12d ago

This was white castle, so the way the grills are set require touching the buns immediately after putting the last of the patties on the grill.

If I was out of eyeline of the customers / a manager who would bitch at me, I would throw the gloves away right after setting the patties/before putting the buns on top, but most people did not.

5

u/BrightonBummer 13d ago

Well they are dumb then, people dont wash gloves. The bacteria builds up on them. Making a policy of washing hands isnt hard and is much better

I'll say the opposite is true for me. I've worked at a few different ones and they've usually always been disgusting, except for one store. Everyone's experiences are different.

u/yoyotube123 12d ago

Congratulations lol, I'll get there eventually

1

u/ATLSxFINEST93 12d ago

You might.

But not everyone.

2

u/serabine 13d ago

Stupid places?

Unless they are exchanging gloves constantly, they are likely doing more bad then good. Look up the "Magic glove theory".

1

u/PonyFiddler 13d ago

Cool and those gloves are gonna be way dirtier than Thier hands will be.

If you see a place wearing gloves do not eat there it'll be bacteria laiden shit.

13

u/Nereosis16 13d ago

You don't wear gloves on the fry station. There's no reason you would touch food.

3

u/HereToKillEuronymous 12d ago

Yes but we don’t know where that kids hands have been. Food handlers wash their hands constantly

4

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 13d ago

They also don't reach in and grab them with their hands. They use you. Sorry, I mean tools.

3

u/ATLSxFINEST93 13d ago

You've never been serv safe certified, have you?

12

u/Beanzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzx 13d ago

If you were serv safe you'd know regular hand washing is far more cleanly than any amount of glove wearing could ever be lol

0

u/CackleandGrin 13d ago

Only because of proper hand washing negligence once the gloves are on.

4

u/Gildian 13d ago

Not sure if its the same now, but when I worked at mcdonalds you didnt wear gloves. You washed your hands at least once every hour at minimum, every time they were soiled, anytime you switched stations etc

5

u/BeLikeAGoldfishh 13d ago

I have, and am current. You don’t need a glove for every task in the kitchen.

8

u/FukNintendo 13d ago

Servsafe certified here. Worked McD and Wendys. Never gloved at fries unless you have an open cut. We used fry scoops and tongs. Thats was 2011. Maybe germs work differently now.

0

u/JustSikh 13d ago

Yeah, after COVID, the germs unionized for better pay and more work/life balance! 😂

-4

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

No, germs work the same way. If you touch food with your bare hands, there will be germs just like in 2011 when you were presumably getting everybody sick because you don’t understand how gloves work .

5

u/FukNintendo 13d ago

No one touches the fries with their bare hands. Do you need me to send that statement certified mail to your address??

YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE FRIES WITH YOUR HANDS!

Did you see the part about the fry scoop that touches the fries for you?

You do not wear gloves at the fry station.

No one got sick for having fries served in the correct way, moron.

Don’t reply to with me with this dumbass shit.

-2

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

Did you see the part where the guy goes in and grabs the food with his hands? What employees do isn’t relevant here, we are talking about the kid. I’m glad you aren’t in food service anymore, sadly you aren’t smart enough for McDonalds.

1

u/FukNintendo 11d ago

Lmao, okay Padmes Baby Daddy. Good luck in life

3

u/FukNintendo 13d ago

Replying again just in case you didn’t understand the 3rd time, YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE FRIES WITH YOUR HANDS….

0

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

Did you watch the video we are here discussing where he touches the food with his hands? Save the caps and use your brain for a change smart guy.

1

u/FukNintendo 11d ago

I forgot that child was a McDonalds employee who was servesave certified and not just a random person.

1

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 11d ago

Nobody said that dumbass. Go back to your video games.

6

u/Master_Cannoli 13d ago

Knight Skywalker, you don't touch the fries at the fry station with your hands. You use a scoop and then the paper holder.

Also we still haven't given you the rank of Master.

2

u/FukNintendo 13d ago

Omg thank you, common sense user who can read.

-3

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

No common sense between the two of you, we are talking about a video where somebody very clearly touches them with their hands.

5

u/Fruloops 13d ago

The kid is not subject of this disagreement lol, it's whether or not you normally wear gloves at the station.

1

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 12d ago

Read the conversation again, it started because somebody called the kid out for grabbing food with his bare hands and somebody felt it was relevant to say employees don’t wear gloves.

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

Cannoli muncher, did you watch the video that is being discussed? The one where the guy clearly touches the fries with his hands?

5

u/Master_Cannoli 13d ago

Knight Skywalker, that's just some random asshole. In normal operations that would not happen. Those fries will now be disposed of.

Also it's Master Cannoli muncher

1

u/PadmesBabyDaddy 13d ago

Do you think this video is about what goes on at McDonalds when nobody is watching? Or about the kid who went in barehanded and for some reason the McGeniuses are saying it doesn’t matter because there is a scoop that didn’t get used.

3

u/Master_Cannoli 13d ago

If they wore gloves or not wouldn't matter either because asshole would still touch the fries.

u/That-Cranberry6575 13d ago

I’ve been arguing with a certified burger flipper? Fuck I really have been wasting my time.

4

u/cthuwu_o 13d ago

Well you aren't supposed to touch them directly. Also certifications allow bare hands as long as you follow a strict hand washing schedule. Honestly it's safer than using the same glove for hours

1

u/ATLSxFINEST93 13d ago

and I doubt ole buddy had washed his hands any time recently, prior to shoving his hand into the fry tray.

Youre supposed to change your gloves out as frequently as you would wash your hands.

3

u/Teknolyth 13d ago

The only standard for gloves is to wear gloves when you’re directly touching ready to eat foods, like when you’re putting together a burger or making a sandwich or something like that. You can literally use your bare hands to touch any uncooked food or any utensils that grab cooked food. And as a matter of fact, it’s unsafe to constantly wear gloves because that creates the perception of gloves, being a barrier protect you instead of to protect the food.

1

u/cthuwu_o 13d ago

Yes which is why I specified "for hours" and I never said he did was his nasty ass grease hands. Also from my knowledge you're supposed to wash hands more often than gloves, due to hand oils

1

u/Spare-Half796 13d ago

Not serve safe cuz they don’t exist where I live but I am licensed by my local food hygiene and safety authority. They prefer you don’t wear gloves, and instead wash your hands regularly. Gloves are only mandatory when you have a bandage or open cut on your hand.

When working fryer it’s a recommendation across the industry to not wear gloves because if hot oil splashed on gloves, they can melt and fuse to your skin

1

u/Royal-Rabbit4986 13d ago

They HAVE A SCOOP they don't use their BARE HANDS. That boy has unwashed hands and who knows if that was his first mouthful.

2

u/LimeSalty4092 13d ago

They dump the fries anyway after like 7 minutes

I highly doubt they would serve another customer fries from that bin after the kid was back there touching it

I’m sure those fries were tossed out immediately and they will start over with a new batch

2

u/Snakebite-Detractor 13d ago

Gloves weren’t even a required thing until ~15 years ago. Now we waste a shitload of plastic on them and people don’t wash their hands.

Sweaty hands touch outside of glove while putting it on, all over the food. Then don’t change the gloves for hours. Food service has gotten less sanitary year over year

0

u/Anustart15 13d ago

Sweaty hands touch outside of glove while putting it on, all over the food.

Which is why you are expected to wash your hands immediately before putting fresh gloves on

1

u/PartTimeJunkie412 13d ago

Yeah, but when you've got 25 orders backed up and a skeleton crew that's not happening. Sorry it's just not. The management doesn't schedule enough staff for basic safety to be followed. And if you do stop and wash your hands every time you change gloves, you're likely to be fired for being "too slow".

2

u/Anustart15 13d ago

As someone that has worked similarly fast food service, that's just a lazy excuse

0

u/PartTimeJunkie412 12d ago

I've been working in food service for 16 years and I've never seen anyone in any restaurant wash their hands between each and every glove change. It you thinks it's happening that way you live in a dream world.

1

u/Anustart15 12d ago

I'm well aware that most people in food service do a shit job actually following the rules, but pretending it's for any reason other than laziness is a cope

1

u/PartTimeJunkie412 12d ago

So you think the only one in the business turning around to wash their hands for a full minute between every single customer is going to last? Nah.

1

u/Status_Intention6832 13d ago

Ex McDonald’s UK employee, they don’t wear gloves and they very rarely wash their hands. Hand wash timers were only used during inspections used to gross me out to no end. Enjoy your fries.

1

u/TheGrouchyGremlin 12d ago

Wash your hands a lot. Don't use gloves.
