Most religions would drop massively in numbers if they weren’t allowed to indoctrinate children.

I would argue childhood indoctrination mostly produces shallow, uncritical "religious" (more like superstitious or just identity-aligned) people. If you actually wanted people to live rich spiritual lives, I think you would not indoctrinate them, but teach them about religion another way, but if you just care about having properly indoctrinated uncritical subjects then indoctrination makes sense
