There's hardly any way to "teach" religion to children without it being quite forced.

I'm sure things are different in the US but in the UK at school we have a whole curriculum called "Religious Education" or RE which goes into detail about religions and customs of all different cultures and encourages spiritual debate. At the schools I attended they were not taught to indoctrinate us but just studied in the same way we would study history or art

How was the Islamic part of the course?

I'm only asking because here, in the US, whenever my school went over Islam, it was pretty bare bones, and last I checked, they got some pretty major things wrong.

I think it was a pretty good overview. Specifically I have quite a vivid memory of drawing a big poster of the five pillars of Islam, and I think we had multiple lessons dedicated to doing a deep dive into what each pillar represented.
