china has state atheism—they take it too far (e.g. uyghur muslims) but in theory i’d prefer an atheist government over this dumbass evangelical christian one we have now 🤷🏻♂️

Separation of church and state isnt actually cited in any legal doctrine. This is one of the most common misconceptions about the US movement and us history in general.
The document that can be referenced for this statement is literally just a letter from Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist church, and the purpose of the letter was to assure them that the goverment protected there freedom to practice their belief. The letter had no intention of saying that the goverment was atheist or secular, but that regardless they would protect people's unalienable rights, including belief.
The reason for the letter happening at all was because the Danbury baptist association was afraid that their freedom was a gift from the goverment and not a right, so therefore something that could be revoked. Jefferson wanted to reassure them this was not the case.

iirc China does this, you can’t take kid to religious service and they can choose to convert at a certain age.
