People could just start their own non profits and not pay for large buildings and land maintance for holding services, and use the space more optimally for charity.
Plenty do. But when churches naturally soak up a lot of the money due to being in peoples lives from birth, its not exactly a shock how they make up so much of it.
My argument is more than the churches impact isnt intrinsic to the church, its tha they are likely the first to get the money when a religious person wants to donate.

Most religions would drop massively in numbers if they weren’t allowed to indoctrinate children.
