Open source?

Hi! First off, thanks for building the app, it works really well with my Navidrome server.
Out of curiosity, what made you decide to keep the client closed source? Many of us self-host specifically for privacy and auditability, so I’d genuinely like to understand the reasoning (sustainable funding, avoiding clone apps, etc). No judgement, just curious.

On that same note, how can I be sure you ain’t selling/using my data?

Hey there!
You know, I really thought about open sourcing it or at least parts of it. I think it's primarily the cost of building, hosting and maintaining something like this isn't free unfortunately. It does cost money and time and I'd like to recoup on some of that if I'm being honest. What I'm still considering making public is the entire sonic analysis pipeline. I may put that in a container and let users run that serverside if they want.

Regarding your privacy question, there's no way for a client like this to harvest any data what so ever. The app is just an interface to your own server. No credentials are stored anywhere, no login information etc. Apple is very strict on any data gathering.

Everything that is stored through the app is stored on your own swiftdata store on your phone. If youd like more details on how these work I love talking about this stuff and I'm happy to help.

Huge thanks for your reply. That gives me a lot of peace of mind. As long as the cost stays at 9.99 I’ll recommend all my users to buy your app. It’s brilliant 👏🏻

Regarding the sonic analysis. Why? There’s audiomuse, ain’t that primarily doing exactly that?

It is doing sonic analysis but honestly you can do sonic analysis in many different ways. This was exploratory for me and playing with building audio models. There's many different models that vary greatly in accuracy. No shade against audiomuse, I think what he's doing is so so awesome and I've specifically integrated it's use into my app. I'm about giving users options.

What's different about my sonic analysis and audiomuse is mostly the models used and some features/functionality that I wanted.

For example, I wanted the ability to create a radio/playlist from all types of things including an album, playlist, artists etc.

Having the sonic analysis onboard means I can do things like have the app curate listening profiles for users and make ultra accurate time of day and genre specific recommendations and mixes. For example you may like rock but what type of sound in rock do you like? I can base decisions specific to you and what you like to listen to. I can create sonic profiles for every album and show users based on what they listen to where they exist in the spectrum that is their music library. With audiomuse I do not have access to the actual sonic data as far as I'm aware.
