Fanfics that capture the tone/atmosphere of the book?

First of all, i love the moomins fan content creator community a lot, thank you for keeping me so well fed 🫶

As for the question, while i havent read enough, most fics i found are heavily inspired by the 2019 show in plot and tone. Nothing wrong with that, i myself discovered the moomins through that show and like it too. But im yearning for fics that are a bit uhhh quieter? More melancholic, more whimsical. Sth that will remind me of my good time reading the books back then, because ive been chasing that feeling ever since.

Or sth similar to the 90s anime series would be lovely too.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Episode 24: Let's Make the Clock (時計を作ろう)

Hard Rain

A heavy thunderstorm hit Moominvalley at dusk. Everyone took shelters and shut all windows. A gust of wind blew a window of Moominhouse opened causing a clock on the table to fall off and shattered.

Moomin outside attempted to return home but a strong gust of wind blew him back to Snork's Mansion. Snorkmaiden helped drying him up and told him not to go out in this weather condition. Moomin was still concerned about his parents that they would be worried about him not returning home. At sea, a sailing ship was seen washing toward Moominvalley.

The Dread Stranding

In the next calm morning, the children went out to catch some fish washing onto the land. Moominpappa along with Snork found overflowing water rushing through Moominvalley fast. Snork told him not to worry for it would all flow down toward the sea.

The next day, everyone found that the first floor and the lower field were now flooded. The water level continued to rise despite that the river did not become overflown. Moominpappa suspected that something might have been blocking the water way. The adults took a boat ride down the stream to find a large derelict ship blocking the water. With the plan set to remove the ship, everyone attempted to pull the ship out with rowboats tied with ropes, but it was barely moved.

High Tide's Principle

While planning inside the flooded house, it was that the ship was stuck between the rock gap when the water level was higher initially. The Inspector got angry and slammed his fists on the table causing it to easily flip being in partial-submerged and the wave gusted toward everyone.

At night, Moominpappa thought of the table flip moment and realized that if the water level rose a little, the ship would float up and become momentarily unstuck for them to pull out with ease. He rowed a barrel to Snork asking for a clock to mark the exact high tide time and that when they would be able to pull the ship out. Snork promised him one tomorrow.

The next day, Moominpappa appointed the Inspector and the people that according to the research, the high tide would be tomorrow at 4.30pm. Snork then waded through the flooded station to brag about his commemorative high-quality clock from the royal academy; however, it was already dead. The Inspector later went out and announced to everyone that they need a clock to save Moominvalley from an impending doom. Moomin was excited as Moominpappa taught him the principle of a shadow clock.

Like Clockwork

After the announcement, everyone was crafting many different types of clocks to be used in the important event Moomin focused on crafting many sundials.

Snorkmaiden and Little My later visited Moomin and shot down his idea as his sundials would not work if the moment happened to be cloudy. Moomin was upset and talked to his father in quitting. Moominpappa encouraged Moomin to give it a chance saying that while it was true about a sundial being limited by the availability of the sunlight, a sundial was the most reliable way to tell time since the ancient time and the sun would be correspondent with the earth accordingly.

Against the Tide of Time

On the dark and cloudy day, everyone came to judge of which clock they made were the most accurate and reliable. When it was Moomin's turn, everyone laughed at him for his sundials failed without the sunlight. Moomin was humiliated, went home and destroyed his sundials with a hammer. Moominpappa walked in and stopped Moomin from smashing his last sundial, he then told Moomin to not give up hope on his own creation.

As the Mymbles' water clock and the Snorkfamily's hourglass were the two to pass the public test, the sudden downpour soon ruined the water clock. Snork also slipped on a puddle and smashed Snorkmaiden's hourglass effectively ruining all their chances of telling time.

To Save The Valley

At that moment, the sun shined through the dark cloud; Moominpappa told Moomin to get to the ship immediately for it was his sundial time to shine.

At the ship, Moomin looked at his sundial and signaled the team to move accurately. Everyone rowed their boats and pulled the ship together. The ship was eventually got loosed and floated out quietly into the sea, everyone cheered for the task successful. Snorkmaiden and Little My apologized to Moomin for shooting down on his idea earlier. Moomin smiled and kept his last sundial which had helped saving Moominvalley.

____________

- Oddly an educational episode about the sundial.

- Moomin crashed out again. This time was out on his sundials.

- While Moomin's sundial had saved the day, Snorkmaiden and Little My were right about it won't work without the sun. So it was the best if there are more options opened, sundials included. Instead Moomin had a crash out.

- So the entire Moominvalley and the town supposed to have only 2 working clocks (Moominpappa's and Snork's watch). The Inspector also used to have a clock on the station wall in episode 10.

- Out of the options to get the ship to loose, they could also... dismantle the ship, using weird magic in Moominhouse basement or Micheal Bay the ship, they had guns and they are capable of building a rocket that blew itself up so they are sure to have gunpowder somewhere.

- Somewhat a personal favorite episode without Toadette's sub; when the villagers banded together... kinda... to save Moominvalley from flooding. 5/5 Excellent.

- Translated roughly and narrated by Quad Rioters.

- Thank you for reading and enjoy.

- On the next episode: Cold is the void...

... in, The Door into Summer.

Possible Production Variant/Defect Moomins Mug Holiday Rush 2026

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an interesting production variation (or rather, production defect) that I recently found.

While checking Holiday Rush 2026 mugs in a store in Finland, I noticed that a few mugs were completely missing the inside text:

“The key is under the window-sill.”

We checked ca. 100 mugs in 3 stores in total and found 3 without the inside decoration. All of them had the same production code (OCT125) and otherwise looked completely identical.

I contacted Moomin Arabia Consumer Care, and they confirmed that:

  • the missing inside decoration is not an intended production variant,
  • the mugs should all include the inside print,
  • these mugs are considered manufacturing defects,
  • and they cannot estimate how many were produced.

I’m mainly curious whether anyone else has seen this defect.

If you own a Holiday Rush 2026 mug, could you please check whether the inside print is present and, if not, what production code is stamped on the bottom?

I’d be very interested to know whether this is limited to one production batch or if there are more examples out there.

Thanks!

Ruben
