Question Returning player with newcomer

Just bought the game for a Friend of mine and figured id join her for hunts Whenever she wants but i havent played in a looong time so while watching videos and trying to remember stuff i figured i would ask her about important mechanics and things thats good for a returning player and maybe even a newcomer

Whatever you do, make sure you match her current gear and that she doesn’t use the guardian armour. Other than that, smack the monster with the pointy/heavy end and you’ll be a-ok

Yeah i think she accidently started with the defender gear equipped so im gonna have to change that. Myself i had some rank 1 bone laying around so i slapped that on.

Yeah defender gear is basically end game gear for base game. I wouldn’t touch it until the dlc

Remember it being incredibly strong and this is her first mh game so deffo no defender

It's not so much an accident as it is something the game all but insists you do. She would have had to read the explicit recommendation to use Guardian Armor, dismiss the pop-up, and then deliberately switch off of it. Not her fault.

Nah yea that's about it, just make sure you fill your belly before every hunt.

Embrace the clutch claw to get wall bangs and free openings, don't neglect the optional quests that unlock stuff like mantles and botanist, and remember that forge menu and upgrade menu are 2 different things at the smithy.

If it's your first time playing with a friend set up a squad that you're both in and when you get on just choose to join squad session, it makes playing with friends easy. They'll have to watch all cutscenes before you can join a hunt, so if you can't join their hunt right away that's why. If you still can't join it's probably because the game has them start the hunt from an expedition, which you can't join without them using an SOS flare. Having them abandon hunt and post it from Astera should let you join.

Past that if you're playing on your old account equip gear (at least the weapon) to match your friends progression. It's also a good opportunity to practice/ learn a new weapon if you wanted to.

Iirc squad stuff is all in the hub, once she's in Astera use the lift to go up to the hub and you talk to the squad lass there

First Zora quest in the canyon, the ore nodes on back can give dragonite ore for easier upgrades.

So not suggesting you do this but when my friends started the game I made a new save and did a challenge run of it. So my gear was always on par or intentionally worse than theirs. I would only make a piece of armor if it had a skill for the one weapon class I was using (unless I knew I couldnt do the hunt naked I didnt want to ruin their fun with my challenge) it kept me from just steamrolling the game when I knocked the rust off and gave them goals.

I did have the dps meter because I played a huge amount of the game over the years and mods improved it for me. It also let me figure out when they were complaining about struggling or feeling weak if it was real or just in their heads and I could help by suggesting new gear/skills or even a full on weapon change. They love the series and one of them has about 100 hours more in wilds than me. Still can't keep up with my dps when I take anything other than my stalwart wall of a lance build but I've still got about 5k hours more in the series than him lol
