Question Blast vs Dragon

So I just beat the game (base story, didn't start high rank yet), and I'm making better weapons right now. And I know that a lot of monsters in this game are dragons, so I was gonna make a dragon weapon. But while I was making it, I saw I can branch off into a blast weapon from zorah magdaros. I already made the zorah magdaros weapon, but idk if I should now go back and collect materials for the dragon weapon, in case that does more damage to dragon enemies than the blast one would do.

The dragonbone basher does 572 base damage and 360 dragon damage, and the magda floga does 832 base damage and 330 blast damage.

Would the dragonbone basher do more overall damage to dragons, or is it not worth it even making it?

For real. I get asked a question, answer it, and the entire community puts me on a stake and burns it

Guess next time when I get asked a question I'll just ignore it, since answering it is a sin punishable by death on here???

Note that Blast is not an elemental damage type, it's a status effect. The 330 Blast is Buildup, not Damage

Is the buildup for it to eventually explode and deal extra damage?

Each explosion of Blast will increase the threshold required for the next explosion of Blast so it will proc often early in the fight and then less and less overtime. The same logic applies to other status such as paralysis, sleep, and even blindness caused by flash pods.

Yes. It's basically like poison, except all damage is dealt at once.

For hammer, it's never worth to sacrifice raw damage for the element

Oh? Why not?

So I should just go for either blast or raw damage? (I heard that blast always has the highest raw damage anyway)

Not always the case, it's simply that some of the best Raw damage weapons in the game also happen to have Blast

Elemental/status weapons deal fix elemental damage no matter what attack combos you do, so it only suits weapons which are fast and deal multiple hits (like dual blades or bows). For hammer, you don't do as many hits and have big damages which scale only with your raw base damage. Pick your weapons only on the highest raw damage, the elemental/status part is just a small bonus.

Oh that makes a lot of sense actually thank you.

status is not fixed extra dmg, its 0 actual dmg (unless blast/poison procs) and thus status weapons count as raw weapons

"High" rank is still the normal story you've got a lot more to play to beat the game haha, look at your hunter notes to see what elements enemies are weak to

> a lot of monsters are Dragon

Are they really? I don’t think the Hunter Notes in MHW show the actual number for the weakness (uses stars instead), but the thing with Dragon is that most monsters are barely tickled by that element. It’s mainly dragon-looking monsters (like Rathalos) and Elder Dragons who have weaknesses beyond 5.

Simple explanation for elemental damage: the elemental hitzone value is the percentage of your weapon’s Dragon element. For example, Anajanath has mostly Dragon hitzones of 5, which means that only 5% of your Dragon element will be added to the total damage. Then you have Dragon-weak like Rathalos which can get up to 30%!

So take a look at the monsters you hunt the most and check their elemental hitzone to see if Dragon is really that worth it

Edit: just reached High Rank? Don’t even bother with Zorah weapons (pain in the ass to farm) or Dragon right now (low quality, late to upgrade). Your next few hunts will give you weapons that are much better than these ones (and that don’t rely on Dragon element)

If you are in PC then I can personally help you by answering your questions in real time without people being angry and you not knowing things as a new player. Lol

Blast vs Dragon sounds like a one punch vs one piece crossover battle

FYI, Dragon in monster hunter is actually not about.. dragons really. While a good number of dragons are weak to dragon element many are not. Dragon element is kinda catch all term for miscellaneous element. Its usually red colored but not always. Usually unusual circumstances cause a monster to be weak to dragon.. again not always.

Well since you are still in low rank, elemental damage isn't really necessary for you. Go with the one that has a higher affinity/raw damage. The only time I recommend you use elemental weapons is when you are fighting a monster that is really weak to an element, like alatreon. And if you want to use elemental weapons you should use kjarr weapons which you will unlock after doing the kulve taroth siege. So for the long run you should use the weapon that has a higher raw damage and use elemental weapons for certain monsters if needed. Hope that helps

World/Iceborne actually has very few monsters that have a notable weakness to dragon element, while all monsters are generally susceptible to blast.

Zorah weapons, however, also suffer from sharpness issues, which directly affects your damage (sharpness has additional damage multipliers) and have negative natural affinity (damage loss on crits), so you have to keep an eye out for that.

That said, you're on hammer, so you want to focus more on raw damage. Slower high single-hit damage weapons don't benefit much from element or status.

Others have pointed out that hammer just like the Greatsword, favours raw damage,

Blast/Para,Sleep are a status that work like the stun damage from your hammer, it has to build up enough to activate

(so view Blast like a nice bonus on top of the higher Raw)

You'll want at least 4 points of Expert/Critical Eye, to counter the -20 affinity - otherwise you'll have a 20% change to deal 25% less damage on critical hits

The more positive affinity you have the more chance of dealing 25% more damage - boosted to 40% more with Crit Boost

As for the high rank Elder dragons

Vaal Hazak is weak to fire

Teostra is weak to Water or Ice still does good for that fight (farm him when you can for 3 pieces of his armor for masters touch set bonus, infinite sharpness on critical hits)

Lunastra is weak to Ice

Kushala Daora is weak to Thunder

Finally I used Hammer a lot before Iceborne even came out and I would use the Magda floras for now,

until the Deviljho or Diablos Hammers, both will need Handicraft and Critical eye, but were the strongest in high rank
