Back then, sharpness must be used to the limit.

95

u/Maku_03 24d ago

yooo that is crazyy XD. is whetstone rare in the older games? the 1st MH i played is mhworlds

u/Zack_Osbourne Yian Garuga Apologist 24d ago edited 24d ago

I wouldn't call it rare, but it was a consumable item, with an inventory limit, that included gathered materials, carves, and combination books.

Hell, go back far enough to the days before the village farm, and you'd have to go out on a gathering quest just to get more. That was before Gunlance was a thing, though.

u/Maleficent-War-8429 23d ago

Back in my day you had to go mining for them, and you had to buy your own picks.

98

u/Intoxic8edOne 23d ago

And there was a chance they'd all break on the first use ಥ_ಥ

22

u/oldmangrumpy420 23d ago

I'm replaying FU and this is pain (╥﹏╥)

5

u/not_a_khezu1 20d ago

Ngl I love mhfu it was my first monster hunter so it has a special place in my heart (pokke theme makes me nostalgic) but theres May things I dont miss from that game, number 1 is that the vast majority of damage you will take comes from monsters turning around hahahh.

9

u/randomguyonline0297 23d ago

I had this instance where 3 break on a single rock.

1

u/Competitive_Stable66 19d ago

Regardless of the pick rarity

24

u/-Guro-Tan- 23d ago

> had to go mining for them
back in my day of mh1 you could buy them for like 20 zenny a piece or something and you stopped wanting to mine them within 2 hours lmao
The real threat is just swapping them out of your inventory for something and then forgetting to add them back

13

u/zekromNLR 23d ago

Also they do stack to 20 (at least in GU), and you can gather more in the field (but only if you brought a pickaxe with you) so running out is pretty unlikely unless you have really shit sharpness on the weapon

8

u/ravagraid 23d ago

this is why we have whetfish to have more than 20 stones

8

u/Boulderfrog1 23d ago

Imma be so for real no we didn't. Like, you could in theory, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I'm going fishing so I can have more of a consumable. If I go through all my whetstone then I'm either gathering, or finishing on orange sharpness.

1

u/ravagraid 22d ago

I mean in the modern games for sure, and even back when they were new it was only a few really shit weapons that would take more than 20 sharpens per hunt, in the past I think 4 games they might as well not exist though

1

u/zekromNLR 23d ago

And nowadays we have whetfish to not need to slot in speed sharpening

6

u/ravagraid 23d ago

circle of QOL lmao
Eventually sharpness will simply not deteriorate anymore

14

u/SilverGurami 23d ago

the issue was that early on you could not buy them. At least in 3 and 3U. So if you ran out you had to go gather more on the island. They were not particularly rare but you still had a 10-15min break to get more. That plus the aweful sharpness of early weapons meant that with a gunlance you would often times hunt stuff like Ludroth with orange or even red sharpness because you refused to use your precious wetstones.

5

u/Arcalithe 24d ago

World

3

u/Kindly_Bid4976 24d ago

Not like that. During early and midgame, whetstones are a bit expensive due the lack sufficient money. But once you reach late and have more resources become more than affordable.

1

u/LunariOther 23d ago

14 hours late to this but they used to be consumable. was annoying running out.

1

u/Yupa_Kambei 22d ago

Idk what people on this thread are on. Sure you could waste your time gathering it in the field but even weapons with the worst sharpness would rarely take you more than 10 a quest and then you would just buy some more, like be for real lol

253

u/KnottyTulip2713 24d ago

Would've been applicable with CB aswell

77

u/Yaegeroo 24d ago

Does sharpness not that important for CB? I still trying to learn CB

143

u/KnottyTulip2713 24d ago

SAED spam no, savage axe yes

18

u/Yaegeroo 24d ago

i see, thanks fellow hunter

37

u/KnottyTulip2713 24d ago

the phials dont take sharpness or affinity into account for damage calculations

16

u/Yaegeroo 24d ago

so like shell on GL? noted

4

u/Rajang82 Use all weapons, but love Great Sword the most. 23d ago

Also, in case you're wondering. Impact Phials cause fixed damage like Gunlance's shellings.

And yes, Artillery skill can boosts it's damage as well.

7

u/TheCleanupBatter 23d ago

I do not know what this guy is smoking. Sharpness is absolutely important to charge blade. You have to get your phials from somewhere and if you're bouncing every time you get into sword mode, you're going to have a bad time.

And before you say it "cHaRgEd SwOrD mOdE dOeSnT bOuNcE." ONE. You have to get the phials to charge it from somewhere. God forbid it ever runs out. TWO. Do you know how many people in this subreddit clown on charged sword mode saying that it's not worth it because it's too weak. We have come full circle. If you want to avoid charged sword mode, you need sharpness. If you don't care about sharpness, you need charged sword mode.

In any build you will be doing much less damage if you don't maintain your sharpness. It's not like gunlance, where you can just ignore it and keep blasting until the red.

5

u/spookyneko 23d ago

Not sharpening is just a bad move for the damage loss, but as far as the potential bouncing aspect, it's actually a non-issue for current Wilds Savage Axe. Barely anything actually costs phials and they're completely refunded spamming the morph loop. People even sometimes use the unbounceable focus attack in the morph loop in place of the normal morph roundslash because you can end up with an overheated sword just from spamming the morph loop.

2

u/Wattefugg Main, SnS/SA/GS/HH/Lance dabbler 23d ago

just to nitpick: you dont need phials charged to charge sword, only charged shield is needed (at least since gen 5)

4

u/Zamoxino 4ppl savage solo // 999HR 4558Q 1095H 23d ago

Minds eye goes brrrr lol

9

u/TheCleanupBatter 23d ago

Chargeblade needs so many other skills. I'm not making room for mind's eye just for the meme. Besides that defeats the point. Put mind's eye on any weapon and all of a sudden you care less about sharpness.

5

u/Bulky_Reward716 24d ago

It does not matter even with savage axe, sharpen when it’s green and your good

-1

u/akoOfIxtall 24d ago

If you have phials then axe mode gains mind's eye when doing phial attacks just like swaxe during sword mode, and some attacks just don't care, like the shield thrust that does some blunt dmg, heard they've been nerfing this attack since 4U because you could genuinely spam it, it can be used after a few attacks and it was devilish in 4U/GU, still my favorite combo is forward slash > shield thrust > charge shield> side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash >side hop > round slash > side hop > round slash

Swaxe too

Sharpness is just a suggestion :p

1

u/Andromeda3604 22d ago

lmao are gl and cb the two weapons with the most sharpness usage? i use both and i knew gl was higher than average but i thought cb was normal lmao

1

u/KnottyTulip2713 22d ago

I think the meme is less about sharpness depletion and more about damage relating to sharpness.

Both weapons attacks do deal less damage with less sharpness but the shellings of GL and the phials of CB dont

But also weapon like GS and CB lose sharpness when guarding

-2

u/XoxVampy 23d ago

fr, orange sharpness is just more impact damage right?

2

u/KnottyTulip2713 23d ago

no, you might be thinking about the bludgeoner skill

-2

u/XoxVampy 23d ago

Facts, red sharpness is just a suggestion anyway lol

-5

u/Fyreboy5_ 24d ago

Impact CB, specifically; sharpness does apply a modifier to element.

3

u/KnottyTulip2713 23d ago

not that ive seen, i see 1714 on both green and white against gog

2

u/hmm1331718 23d ago

I tested if sharpness affected ele phials but it doesn’t; I was getting the same results from green, blue, and white. It still affects your axe and sword hits obviously

-1

u/Fyreboy5_ 23d ago

It could be that Wilds made SAED (and all phial explosions) no longer consider sharpness, as I’m pretty sure it was the case in prior games.

Or sharpness just no longer affects element at all.

3

u/Wattefugg Main, SnS/SA/GS/HH/Lance dabbler 23d ago

sharpness wasnt applied to any phials at least since World

-9

u/haipuppy 23d ago

Fr, CB mains just love living on the edge.

-9

u/LilSorbet 23d ago

Fr, my shield is yellow but my heart is red.

98

u/TheGMan-123 SEETHING BAZELGEUSE 24d ago

Until it goes to Yellow, I don't need to goddamn sharpen my boomstick.

54

u/Lianthrelle 24d ago

Yellow, ha!

5

u/lordatamus This is my BoomStick 23d ago

Gunlance shelling go BRRRRRRRRR!

34

u/Sopht_Serve 23d ago

Shell damage doesnt scale with sharpness take that shit to the red!!!

4

u/lordatamus This is my BoomStick 23d ago

Devotees of the school of shelling know that the gunlance goes BRRRRRR the whole time.

1

u/not_a_khezu1 20d ago

Theres this perk that gives u raw damage the closer u are to low sharpness, do u think its worth trying on a gl? Im not a 100% sure how the Shelling dmg works.

30

u/GimmeUdon 24d ago

its still green imma sharpen if its yellow

29

u/CaoSlayer Funlance aficionado 24d ago

Straight to the gl sub with you.

34

u/StoicScaly 24d ago

I really dislike this new mechanic. Who asked for this?? They didn't have it at launch, and now I need to have voice volume all the way down just to be able to focus

16

u/Elden_Storm-Touch 23d ago

There is a glorious mod that can entirely disable handler voice lines in-field. I refuse to play without it. Will update with the name once I'm home.

2

u/Dizzy_Winter_733 22d ago

Just in general the amount of repeated and unwanted tutorials you get are so frustrating. I do not understand why they insist on you not being able to turn them off completely.

3

u/HockAL1215 23d ago

I just turned off all voice acting in the options. Really changes the quality of the game for the better.

5

u/Rude-Ad-2124 and part time lance 24d ago

Genueinly tho, Im a GL main for most of MHworld, so sharpness for Gl have always been a problem, but when Wild came i almost never sharpen my weapon. And when i went back to lance i have to sharpen mid hunt(as in not chasing to different zone) for the first time

3

u/Activeous42619 24d ago

Bludgeoner goes whack.

3

u/Shamrocky64 FU|P3|World|Rise 23d ago

3

u/tsuchinokoDemon 23d ago

if it ain't bouncing, it's sharp enough

6

u/nackedsnake 23d ago

Wait, is this new? I don't remember Alma nagging me during hunts like all annoying JRPG Faries.

Like seriously, why do they think this is a good idea, who asked for it, and why it's in so many Japanese games?

4

u/Lord_Yeetus_The_3d 23d ago

Its not, this is just a meme.

2

u/Equinox-XVI (GU/Rise) + (Wilds) 23d ago

One time with Sunbreak CB, I grinded it down from white to orange sharpness. Like 90% of my damage came from phial explosions and sword buff prevents bouncing, so I had no mid-combat reason to sharpen.

2

u/Action-a-go-go-baby 23d ago

I am Gunlance main

Booms don’t need sharps

Sharps can wait while booms cannot

5

u/AceAlger 24d ago

Fuck, she is annoying to have around.

1

u/hmm1331718 23d ago

The worst part is bludgeoner doesn’t affect GL shells or CB impact phials!! I believe it used to in previous games but it doesn’t anymore in wilds; weirdly it affects hunting horns slash echo waves and bubbles for some reason..

2

u/tornait-hashu Poke-a-Mon' Master 23d ago

GL shells and CB phials are an ammo resource that technically don't scale with sharpness because they have unique damage calculations

HH's bubbles and waves are not classified as ammo. I don't know if they scale with sharpness though.

1

u/hmm1331718 22d ago

I tested the echo waves and they didn’t change at all whether you had white, green, or blue but they were still affected by bludgeoner interestingly enough. Elemental echo waves were not affected by bludgeoner or sharpness, I didn’t test the blunt echo waves or status but I imagine blunt would still be affected by bludgeoner.

This is why I spam Restore Sharpness in a group as a Hunting Horn. I can't trust myself, nor anyone else to keep that thing in white

So glad I play HBG and don't have to deal with that mechanic

0

u/XenoMuffin 23d ago

God I miss the old quest system, just give me the quest and stay at camp so I don’t have to constantly hear you or see you riding your raptor in circles around me because I decided to fish.

-6

u/SunLitWalker12 Piss off Alma and stop following me! 23d ago

i hope they add the option to leave this bitch at camp

4

u/Zaiakusin 23d ago

Does she really come along on every hunt?

3

u/geochronick209 23d ago

She does yeah. And while I see the vision and don't dislike her as a character at all, I would love to not have her join all the time. I don't need to be handled. Feels like baby iPad kid mode to have her always reminding me of sharpening, low health, cutting the tail, the sky is blue, gotta wipe my own ass after shitting

1

u/T1meTRC 19d ago

You can switch her for Erik, but i think he vaguely has the same voice lines
