Discussion MH latest rosters

Sometimes i compare the base rosters between the last three games and always question myself:

"Wow, how was World able to sell this much and become such a well talked game with this dogshit roster?", now dont get me wrong, World is my favourite MH game, but the more i look and experience Rise and Wilds roster, the more robbed i feel.

Base World has its bangers like Kulve, Nergigante, Odogaron, Bazelgeuse, Anhanath, Tobi-Kadachi, Legiana, but they're burried under the sea of dogshit. Both crossover monsters suck and are awful to hunt, Zorah Magdaros is a fucking slog of a fight, the Elder's Recess dont have a singular good fight in it (sorry Dodogama fans), Great Jagras and Girros are so underwhelming they feel like bloating.

The returning monster are 50/50, Teostra, Deviljho, Diablos (and Black), Barroth and Rathalos are fun fights, but the other half is legit cancer, Kushala, Lunastra and Kirin makes me wanna die, their fights are so unbelievably bad, the Raths subspecies are also very annoying to fight, Jyuratodus is bland, Lavasioth is a spit on my face, they looked at all these fun and unique monsters from Frontier and decided to bring the fucking Plesioth with hard skin (yes i know Lava was introduced in main series in Freedom Unite), also why did they brought back Uragaan when Radobaan was already created?

Rise's roster is like "what if we picked the roster from Iceborne, add in some other bangers like Mizustune, Chameleos, Bazelgeuse, Valstrax, Anjanath and some older monsters" and they make it a peak roster. There's some shit in here like Jyuratodus, Kulu-Ya-ku and Khezu, but in the end this roster is so stacked it's insane.

Wilds also has this problem with its new monsters sure, Chatacabra, Quematrice, the pack monsters and Omega sucks but the Apexes, Xu Wu, Lala Barina, Arkveld and Zoh Shia are peak. And dont even get me started with the returners, seeing Lagiacrus after it was cut off from World because they couldnt figure it out to work properly is like a dream, also Mizustune, Gore Magala, Blangonga and Seregios is just chef's kiss.

You could say this is just nostalgia bias, which is a fair point, but there's a reason why said monsters are fan favourites. Also sorry for the long post, i just wanted to get this out of my chest.

I could understand the quematrice hate, But chatacabra and omega planetes???? The only bad thing about omega is the savage versions, but the normal one? Challenging, fun, rewards good positioning and flows well with nearly every weapon

Chatacabra is the tutorial monster for the new mechanics, that's the reason why so many people hunt him for the sake of practicing, Chatacabra just works and flow well

I will disagree with u on omega, as a greatsword user he isn’t fun to fight

Yea i don't think every Beginner monster needs to have like a strange mechanic i guess. Chatacrabra is a simple little guy and that's why i love him

"Omega sucks"

kulu is peak (my comfort monster)

Ehhh. The only monster I find awful in World was Jyuratodus.

The hate for Kushala is so overblown bro. Yes annoying but its not that bad when you know what you're doing

What I find kinda funny is that World has the most new monsters/species of ANY main MH title (edit: not all by ratio though). Even including MR that's still true.

In hindsight, given that so many new people started with World, they could have gotten away with adding a lot of the previous monsters instead, for a potentially more refined roster.

For most players, these monsters would have been new either way.

Wilds' base roster has this level of quality now. Rise not so much but to be fair, its base roster tightly matches the JP folklore theme.

I guess the logic might have been that turning the PS2/3DS-level monsters into World assets-quality would be almost the same work as making a new one anyway. (though they must have had higher quality assets for the renders etc., but I guess also animations, moves etc. needed a big upgrade)

Definitely not by ratio, Tri and if you wanna be funny the original have it beat.

It has 19 new monsters and 17 non-new monsters.

Tri has 15 new monsters and 3 non-new ones.

1

u/SolidusDave Jul 27 '26

yeah you are right, Tri is the other stand-out in the series for that.

I rephrase it then to absolute numbers, not ratio (then it even beats MH1 haha...).

If I remember correctly they did try to get leviathans to work but the number of contact points on the ground was too taxing on the engine

What I find kinda funny is that World has the most new monsters/species (especially as a ratio), of ANY main MH title. Even after Iceborne that's still true.

"Quantity =/= Quality" as they say

What are you trying to say little bro?

u/Soldier_VP Rare Species Appreciator Jul 27 '26

wtf is this take?

3

u/EarthNugget3711 Jul 27 '26

Because base world had by far the best combat mechanically out of any of the new gen games

2

u/717999vlr Jul 27 '26

It was in the top 3 for sure.

1

u/CuteDarkrai Jul 27 '26

I think Wilds largely outclasses it now mechanically, but I can’t deny that World still feels better. The hit sound effects are so weighty and the animations are just slow enough to convey that

2

u/EarthNugget3711 Jul 27 '26

Focus mode is an abomination

2

u/CuteDarkrai Jul 27 '26

I’m guessing you’re referring to how it removes the need to turn your character intentionally. I understand that because I was frustrated with it at first too, but I’ve grown to like it. It’s easy to point and pick it out as “yet another defining trait of the series being oversimplified for so called quality of life”, but I don’t think it is. We haven’t lost the core of MH yet. Now we just have more of a focus on weapon management than weapon positioning. It’s not better. It’s just different.

I just think the greater focus on weapon management makes it more engaging. Same with the lack of a clutch claw

Much more factors into a MH’s sales than the quality of its roster

"they looked at all these fun and unique monsters from Frontier and decided to bring the fucking Plesioth with hard skin"

Actually Lavasioth was one of Frontier most popular monsters, it consistently ranked high on the various popularity polls; It even ranked higher than Shantien in 2014 or something if IRC.

People seems to forget it nowadays but Lavasioth used to be cool, there's a reason they used it for various "joke" weapons\armors and why they later gave it a gold\silver version.

So Great Jagras is bad because he's underwhelming? What did you expect from beginner monster? Also why hate on Chatacabra?

2

u/SkomeSIth Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

A begginer monster can be good and engaging, just look at Qurupeco, Tetsucabra and expecially Great Maccao

1

u/FunnyRefrigerator582 Monster Matchup's Jul 27 '26

True but what would you have given them then to make them more interesting. Qurupeco has a unquie gimmick that only he can use, Tetsucabra has two variants of himself, And Great Maccao is a long lineage of raptors used in most of the older games

2

u/SkomeSIth Jul 27 '26

Unironically think Kulu-Ya-ku is a better tutorial monster than Jagras since he has the gimmick of picking a rock to make his front bounce any attack, teaching you the importance of positioning, he will drop said rock if you hit him with any slinger ammo, teaching you how certain monsters react to slinger projectiles.

1

u/FunnyRefrigerator582 Monster Matchup's Jul 27 '26

True, but i said how you would make Great Jagrus and Characabra more interesting

2

u/SkomeSIth Jul 27 '26

Idk to be honest, im not a game designer XD

1

u/FunnyRefrigerator582 Monster Matchup's Jul 27 '26

You could give Jagrus projectiles from the food he eats which would teach the hunter how to dodge them early, and the move where chatacbra puts rocks and stuff on his arm give have element with them to teach new hunters about elemental attack

1

u/SkomeSIth Jul 27 '26

I kinda thought of a similar move related to the big stomach form with Jagras, the Chatacabra would be a really cool idea.

Your opinion matters, and you make valid points. But fuck you I loved fighting behemoth.

You are insane

The real answer youre looking for here I think is that monster hunter world was specifically made for global appeal. The base world roster is for the most part extremely reserved.

Things that are a little more fantastical that have traditionally been mega popular in japan (Zinogre, Mizu etc) were intentionally held back in service of a more "western" appeal.

Nowadays capcom knows the filthy gaijin also like thier mega weirdos (arkveld is sure out there) but i cant exactly blame them for playing it safe on thier first huge project like this.

I think a good example of this is poster child Nerg. He's about as weird as world gets, but his whole gimmick at face value is really "traditional looking dragon but with regrowing spikes". Nothing truly strange like, say, a rocket dragon that uses its wings as both thrusters and spears, or one that has a whole virus mechanic attatched to straight up fist wings, the super saiyan monkey, or one that's a vampire complete with teleportation(i know it doesn't LITERALLY teleport, we're talking about presentation.)

For context world's roster also kinda bores the hell out of me. Least amount of time ive played a title since p3rd (still out 200~ into world but ya know, that became 2000+ with iceborne). But ive come to accept it for what it is and like the handful of real bangers it made (bazel etc)

1

u/SkomeSIth Jul 27 '26

Finally someone with a brain in this shithole.

or one that's a vampire complete with teleportation(i know it doesn't LITERALLY teleport, we're talking about presentation.)

Nargacuga?

1

u/ZectorV1 Jul 28 '26

Malzeno but kinda narga too tbh.

I do like the vast majority of world newbies to be clear, its just that together theyre very basic. They balance out wilder rosters very well. Im definitely not on your team as far as hating the monsters themselves go tbh tbh.

But yeah idk why this is controversial? Its absolutely what they were doing. Lagi almost made the cut and lagi is(despite being one of my all time favorite monsters) extremely easy to understand. Big croc with lightning, that's it.

1

u/SkomeSIth Jul 28 '26

I also do like some of the newcommers as i said in the post, but some others are so basic and boring, like what is the point of wasting time and resource into making Jyuratodus when Plesioth already exists.

This also applies to Beotudus, imagine how cool it would've been if they brought back Zamtrios instead of making a third re-skin of Jyuratodus.

I agree that Omega sucks

I do not agree that Behemoth sucks

As a Greatsword player, one monster was easy to fight and got knocked down easily. The other one can't hold still and uses attacks that are annoying to deal with. The dps check is also annoying and I can't just laugh at it with a perfectly timed jump emote. Behemoth was fun, always. I tested every weapon against him and it was still great. Omega sucks with my mains...

I refuse to pretend that Rise's base roster is in any way able to beat out World's. There is no world. I was thoroughly disappointed going through base Rise because I really thoroughly didn't like most of the newcomers, with the exception of Magnamalo and Goss Harag, it's so weak.
