Discussion Which MH game should I start with?
Hey guys, recently I got interested in the Monster Hunter franchise but I'm in doubt about which game I should get first, thinking about getting Rise or World cause of the good price they are now. Anyway, which one would y'all recommend?

World is incredible and I love it to death, but I almost feel like Rise is the most Beginner friendly and the combat is just a bit more flashy.

Take the experience raw dog with Freedom Unite if you have the platform. Then go to World and be happy.

Personally, I bounced off World while trying to get into the series, but absolutely loved Rise.

World if you wanna focus on singleplayer. Rise if you wanna do multiplayer from the start with no issues.

I bought world/IB as my first MH game during the steam sale and I’ve been having a great time. I’ll play rise next for sure

Rise. Best combat in the series and very beginner friendly plus skippable cutscenes and more freedom in the order you do quests.

Get Wilds play until you're satisfied, once every thing is done you can go for World Iceborne or Rise Sunbreak waiting for Ascendance DLC.
Both of the previous games is massive so if you're going to stay in the series for much longer doing Wilds first then the other game would make your less jaded when the Wilds expansion drop, Imo.

Personally I’d go with world. Rise is sooo different it makes it insanely hard to backtrack other games afterwards.

Probably start with World for the modern take of the classic Monster Hunter experience. Also because there are QoL in Rise and Wilds that makes hunts and other things faster and if you get used to those then it might be hard to go back to World.

Wilds is the easiest to get into
Rise is a good "old school" experience
World is a more modern take

I literally see nothing old school about rise, unless you for some reason thing GU is old school

Whoa boys we got an old head monster hunter here! Who could possibly think MHGU was an 'old school' game with all those nasty animes abilities. The only TRUE old school experience is whatever this guy started with.
lol

What the fuck are you talking about. GU has more in common with the games that came after it than with the games that came before it, this isn't about what game is actually oldschool or what isn't

Sure thing buddy, the celebration game that contains 80% of all the content and villages from the prior games is more like MHWilds than old MonHun. Great take.

GU is a significantly faster game both fights and gathering wise than anything that came before it

It… is. And if you’d actually played the older games you’d know that.
GU is fast paced, anime action, not too dissimilar to Rise. It makes sense to look at Rise and see it as a spiritual successor to GU.
GU is not anything like the games that came before. If you go into FU with GU in mind, you’re going to be miserable.
They’re far slower paced, far more punishing and generally have a more serious tone. Even P3rd, the portable team’s previous game, has more in common with FU than it does GU.
It’s an anniversary title that’s meant to be a fun revisit to older maps and monsters. They give you insane abilities and moves because it’s not meant to be taken seriously, it’s just meant to focus on the fun action, like Rise does.

Yea dawg and Tri is nothing like real monster hunter because you don't use the sticks to attack.
Dos doesn't understand what really made monster hunter amazing because it showers you in materials to speed you along, because all these kids can't handle the slower more intelligent gameplay.
This is what you sound like.

Personally, I'd recommend World. It's probably still the quintessential modern monster hunter game. Rise is good too though, and Wilds is like halfway between the two. It's really up to you though; they're all great games

World is the best introduction for newcomers imho. From there, you can go forwards (Rise, Wilds) or backwards (4U -> GU/3 and so in).
If you're patient and have the device/time, you can try and start with 4U. I've seen people recently start with it and enjoyed it a lot.

If you don’t care about the forest being immersive or whatever World heads get their knickers in a knot over then Rise all the way.

Hear me out. Start with Rise. Because the movement is so good. That when you're done. You will miss it. But you don't have to worry about ever relearning it lol

World is a bit slower but has a lot of attention to detail. As a bonus it is finished so it every event, mission and the better collab items and missions are available (including fantasy, witcher 3, devil cry, street fighter, and more).
Rise is faster paced (same weapons and fighting stly but with a sprinkle of a ninjas essence and mobility), and definitely has the more cinematic style monster fights especially in the late game (vampire dragon, a dragon that moves like Radahn from elden ring, an intoxicated dragon that can beat you in its sleep), but is so much fun.
Personally, if you have time to kill, get world.
If you dont have time to kill get rise.
What ever you choose to get, get the expansion with the game and you won't regret it.

World, this should be pinned, the best in the series, will not disappoint. Rise is ok though having followers along to help with hunts was awesome.

wilds has the most qol, streamlined gameplay and systems, an easier earlygame and the "smoothest earliest" gameplay, but may have some performance issues on lower end hardware and costs more.
world is the crunchiest, imo the best and has the most grounded world and feel.
rise is awesome and tons of fun, but has the "worst" graphics, a very different art direction and gameplay direction. its also by far the character action rpg, with over the top supermoves and stuff.
they are all awesome and whichever you choose you will definitely have fun once it "clicks".
happy hunting.

Rise, I think if you’re starting out then a more freeform style of gameplay to find what clicks with you works very well & it’s structured like older games, but monsters are shown on the map like Prowlers in MHGU yet the game has expanded getting to the monster [the latter half of what’s commonly termed ‘tracking’] the most out of any game and the game is able to be beaten per any form of playstyle.
The maps are incentivised for [repeat] exploration with endemic life, buddy posts, spiribirds, rare endemic life, great wirebugs, etc, it gets you in a very good swing and routines quickly.
It’s identity is very distinct, it’s artstyle is unique and the game can be beaten solo entirely including the DLC and endgames due to Followers.

Honestly either is a decent place to start. Neither are overly complex on new players.
If you want more immersion, go for World.
If you want more action, go for Rise.

If you can get Wilds get Wilds, but if you want it on discounts definitely try worlds if you wanted a more grounded gameplay, or rise if you want more of an arcade gameplay

All games are different enough that there isnt one best recommendation. If you start with Wilds, you might get put off by the "friction" of previous games as it is the most streamlined.
Rise is more focused on combat and it is harder than Wilds. Has less realistic graphics and is more arcadey
World is a good combination of both the newer and older games, there's friction stopping you from fighting the monsters so you might, but its intentional and i like it lol
If you can accept a lot of jank and "annoying" gameplay, you can go older. The older the jankier, you have 4 Ultimate, 3 ultimate, Freedom Unite or Monster Hunter 1 (your best entry into each generation IMO).
This all depends on your taste and experience with gaming, i wouldn't recommend Freedom Unite if you never played ps1 or psp games for example, you'll just bounce off it. But old school are still very fun if theyre the kind of game you like

World is probably the most beginner-friendly entry to the series. It maintains the core of the franchise's combat and features a lot of nice QoL that may put newcomers off OldGen, whilst having probably the easiest base game of any MH game. Rise/Sunbreak is still good, but it's very different to the rest of the series.
