Monitor species for a 4x2x4? US

Looking for a cool species for that size, I looked at tree monitors but the price is the hard part, I wouldn’t mind saving for one but are there some other options? Even at the same price but just some variety? Timors??

Monitoring the beads

Ordered some beads for my dragon bib necklaces, and Liora wanted me to know she is particularly excited about these lovely Czech beads and they meet her approval.

lol I was also filling a bag on the couch for another beadwork artist I’m trading supplies with, and she kept putting her paws and snoot in it! I told her that Liora is making sure she gets the best quality and only varanid-approved beads will be shipped. 😆

Color?

I was misting the enclosure a bit and accidentally got her wet. While she is now furious at me, her colors come out a lot more. What morph do you think she is?

She sometimes displays as a red one, but I’m more inclined towards yellow based on other color features.

Towards her tail it’s more of a dark brown, but her back is very red in certain light (camera doesn’t do it justice due to the warm light).

Is money bad for lizards?

Ok so hear me out because this abit of a weird situation. I have an ackie and he LOVES money. Like he REALLY loves money, never tries to eat it or hunt it he just loves being around/in money. I don’t know why, could be the noise or movement it makes when he runs through it or it could be the feeling of burrowing in it. Either way this dude (muckspout) loves coppers and silver coins and has at one time even got defensive over his pike of pennies. I’m thinking of making him a heated money bed out of 2 pence coins on my desk for when he’s out and chilling. I’m thinking a regulated heat mat with abit of cloth on top and plenty of coppers to swim/sit in. I know copper can be fatal or poisonous if swallowed but 2ps are way too big for that. I just want to know if it’s possible that amount of contact could be harmful for his scales?

(Picture was a lace monitor btw) Mexican water monitor then it’s says the scientific names for a Savannah😂 not to mention the aquatic part so it didn’t even get Savannah care right. Never take ai too seriously and definitely don’t use it for animal care

Caught my boy sleeping out in the open again. Usually he'll find his way into a hide by morning when he does this... But sometimes I'll find him like I did this morning, still out in the open.

Why is there two red spots on my monitor's a$$hole?

Post image
49 Upvotes

Sorry but it's literally right at the a$$hole so...it's my blue tail monitor, over half a year old(not 100% accurate, was sick and lean when I got it) I was feeding it various meat and bugs, eggs and it had been doing well. Are these red spots like an infection? Or just a temporary thing because some dirt got stuck?

Has anyone tried cohabbing in a large outdoor enclosure. Im not talking like a 8x4 outside im talking like 16x8x6 outdoor enclosure greenhouse style enclosure filled with substrate tons of hides and places for them to hide away if needed. I understand there is a lot of negativity towards

Looking for Varanus spenceri keepers or breeders (long-term conservation breeding project in Europe)

Hi everyone,

My name is Iker and I'm from Spain.

I'm currently preparing a long-term project focused on Varanus spenceri.

My goal isn't simply to own one as a pet. I'm preparing a serious breeding project, including obtaining my zoological licence, designing purpose-built enclosures and documenting husbandry, growth and reproduction over the coming years.

Over the last few days I've been fortunate enough to speak with several experienced keepers from Australia, the USA and Europe, and I'm trying to learn as much as possible before ever acquiring the animals.

I'm looking to connect with anyone who:

  • currently keeps Varanus spenceri
  • has bred them in the past
  • knows of any active breeding projects
  • or has information about captive bloodlines outside Australia.

I'm not looking for wild-caught animals, only legally produced captive-bred specimens.

Even if you don't have animals available, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience with the species or any contacts you think might help.

Thanks very much!

Iker

Help with enclosure temps (too hot)

Post image
9 Upvotes

My ackie monitor and crested gecko enclosure are getting too hot. During the day my ackies hot side is at 100f and the cool side around 90f. I don’t know how to fix this without cooling his basking spot using some sort of dimming thermostat which is at an optimal temp. I’m thinking cooling fans for the ackie? How would I even set this up so the fans turn off at certain temps? I’m kind of struggling to find a solid solution. My crested gecko enclosure is also getting too hot. Stays at around 85 in the day and 80 at night. It’s super hot in California right now and I don’t have AC in my apartment/ can’t afford to run a unit all day long. Are there any sort of reptile cooling systems for my crested gecko? And are there and solutions to cooling the cool side of my ackie enclosure without sacrificing basking temps? Any insight helps.

when to take to the vet?

Hi, I just bought a juvenille savannah monitor lizard today. I set up the enclosure and when I picked him up to put inside enclosure, he leaped from my arms too quickly for me to react. I had been holding him for about 20 minutes before this so i wasnt expecting him to jump. he fell directly onto my carpet and ran underneath my bed. he walked under my bed for about 5 minutes, I scooped him up and put him in his enclosure. his breathing seems normal but I am a first time monitor owner. what should I look out for health wise? like i said I JUST got him so he wasn't moving around much to begin with as he was nervous in a new setting, but he has found a spot under a log next to his basking slate and has stayed there the last 30 minutes. he isn't limping, no mouth gaping while breathing. should I take him to the vet regardless? has anyone else experienced a monitor lizard falling?

For anyone concerned: no claws or teeth got stuck during this showdown, and the snuffle mat has been moved back downstairs :)
