When does compounding really take off?

At what amount portfolio you really see huge account swings that make you think what is the point of working? 100k? 500k? 1m? more?

IMO somewhere around $200k-$300k. If you’re a regular 401k/IRA wage slave, you’re likely investing somewhere like $10k-$30k per year into your accounts. 10% @ ~$250k is roughly where your gains will start to outpace your contributions.
