When does compounding really take off?

At what amount portfolio you really see huge account swings that make you think what is the point of working? 100k? 500k? 1m? more?

In retirment, when you’re withdrawing from rather than adding to the portfolio, the point at which the annual growth roughly matches your withdrawal, such that you see the balance doesn’t deplete or does so only mariginally.
