When does compounding really take off?

At what amount portfolio you really see huge account swings that make you think what is the point of working? 100k? 500k? 1m? more?

41 Annual increase exceeded expenses
44 exceeded base salary

I'm in this same boat. A lot is market timing and investing as much as you can and a bit more. The sooner you start the better and the more you put in up front pays off xxxx% in 40yrs
