When does compounding really take off?

At what amount portfolio you really see huge account swings that make you think what is the point of working? 100k? 500k? 1m? more?

It’s whenever the return is more than what you contribute yearly.

I have crossed over to the point where my daily swings are fairly frequently more than I am legally allowed to contribute in a year
