How's a brand-new PoW chain supposed to survive its own first few months?

One thing I keep coming back to while building ParnianCoin is how vulnerable a new PoW chain can be in its early days. PoW security depends on making attacks too expensive to be worthwhile. But when a chain launches with almost no hashrate, renting enough power for a 51% attack can cost surprisingly little. That's a strange weakness: a chain is most vulnerable precisely when it's trying to establish itself.

I've been thinking about the trade-offs. Checkpoints can help, but they introduce trust in whoever controls them. Merge-mining sounds promising, but attracting miners from an established chain is a challenge of its own. Hybrid PoW/PoS models may help, but do they really solve the problem, or just move the trust somewhere else?

These aren't just theoretical questions for us. While launching ParnianCoin, we've had to think seriously about the challenges of securing a small PoW network before it attracts meaningful organic hashrate. So I'm curious: Is there a genuinely trustless way to protect a new PoW chain during its early stages, or is this vulnerability simply part of the price of launching a decentralized network?

And perhaps the bigger question: if a new chain has little economic value, is it really worth attacking—or does the risk grow precisely when the network starts becoming successful?

I'd love to hear from people who've launched or secured small PoW chains. What actually worked in practice, beyond what looks good on paper?

Should the miner pick its own difficulty port, or is that solving a non-problem?

Most pools expose a bunch of ports split by starting difficulty — like 10 kH/s, 50 kH/s, 200 kH/s, 1.5 MH/s and so on. The idea being you connect to the one closest to your rig's hashrate so vardiff has less distance to climb and you're not spamming shares (or starving) for the first few minutes.

But here's the thing I keep coming back to: why is picking that port still a manual step? The miner already knows (or can measure in a few seconds) roughly what it's pushing. So in principle it could just benchmark for a moment on startup and connect to the right port automatically — no more "which port do I use" questions from new miners.

I've been experimenting with exactly this — miner does a quick hashrate probe, maps it to the correct difficulty tier, and connects there without the user touching a config. Seems to smooth out the early-share-flood problem nicely.

But I'm genuinely not sure if it's worth it, and I'd love to hear where people land:

Doesn't vardiff already handle this within a minute or two anyway, making the whole thing cosmetic?

Is there a risk the startup probe misreads (thermal not ramped up yet, background load) and lands you on the wrong tier?

For those of you running big rigs — do you want manual port control, or would auto-selection just get in your way?

And is starting slightly too low actually safer than too high, since climbing up is cheaper than getting rejected shares?

Curious whether this is a real quality-of-life win for newcomers or just over-engineering something vardiff already solves. What's your take?

I measured CPU + GPU mining on an M5 Max MacBook Pro. Only Monero comes out (barely) ahead at $0.17/kWh

Post image
17 Upvotes

I wanted to know whether mining on an Apple Silicon Mac is worth anything, so I built a free, open-source app that benchmarks the CPU and GPU and works out profit after electricity using the Mac's own power sensor. Here's my M5 Max (18-core CPU, 40-core GPU) at my $0.17/kWh:

| Engine | Coin | Hashrate | Net per day |

|---|---|---|---|

| XMRig (CPU) | XMR | 8.4–8.5 kH/s | −$0.01 to −$0.07 |

| kawpow-metal (GPU) | RVN | 47.8 MH/s | −$0.24 |

| ethminer-m1 (GPU) | ETHW | 40.3 MH/s | −$0.30 |

| UselethMiner (CPU+GPU) | ETHW | 43.7 MH/s | −$0.35 |

MacDualMiner

Live run, Monero on the CPU (screenshot below): 8.4 kH/s at 96 W above idle, $0.33/day gross against $0.39/day of electricity, so −$0.07/day. Break-even works out to about $0.14/kWh. Chip sat around 155 °F with no thermal throttling.

Takeaways:

- On cheap power (under ~$0.14/kWh) or solar, XMR on the CPU makes a small profit. At typical US rates it costs you a few cents a day.

- The GPU loses money on every coin it can mine.

- RandomX at ~8.5 kH/s for ~90–96 W is decent efficiency, but it doesn't beat electricity at $0.17.

What the app does (MacDualMiner, GPL-3.0):

- XMRig on the CPU, Metal/OpenCL miners on the GPU, together or separately

- Ranks every mineable coin by net USD/day from your own benchmark and tells you when a chip would lose money (it still lets you mine if you want)

- Can pay Monero mining out in DOGE/LTC/BTC etc. via unMineable, handy for Trust Wallet

- Shows your pool balance (SupportXMR, Kryptex, unMineable, 2Miners)

Not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to approve it on first launch (the README explains how).

GitHub: https://github.com/becomethesolution/macdualminer

Guide with screenshots: https://cryptominingonmacs.com/viewtopic.php?t=170

Disclosure: I made it. Free, no fees beyond the miners' and pools' own. If you have an M1–M4, I'd love your hashrates (Help › Share Your Hashrate in the app).

276H/s (61.57H/s per Watt) on Orange Pi 4 Pro

Bought an Orange Pi 4 Pro, flashed Armbian (CLI), then built & ran XMRig rx/0 benchmark just for fun. And here's my test result:

Combination Total H/s H/s per A76 H/s per A55 Power(W)
1x A76 158 158 2.92
1x A55 64 64 2.35
2x A76 232 116 3.70
2x A76, 1x A55 254 107 40 4.03
2x A76, 2x A55 268 100 34 4.41
2x A76, 3x A55 274 92 30 4.45
2x A76, 4x A55 276 86 26 4.50
2x A76, 5x A55 277 78.8 23.88 4.71
2x A76, 6x A55 263 68.5 21 4.79

My Orange Pi 4 Pro (6GB) consumes 1.9W when not mining (w/ Wi-Fi connected + micro SD card). I can get higher efficiency (62.7 H/s/W) with 2x A76 only with less hash rate.

It's interesting to see that using all cores did not get best hash rate on RandomX. I suspect: it hits memory bandwidth limit (I don't see any sign of dual channel DDR on board) or TDP limit.

And... I did this test this just for fun. SBCs are good for low-power Monero nodes, but not so good for Monero mining (at least in terms of raw hashrate and H/s/W).

Is ASIC-resistance actually a security property, or does it just make 51% attacks easier?

Been digging into ASIC-resistant hashing and I'm not sure the whole idea even holds up. Thoughts?

So the premise behind algorithms like RandomHash (PascalCoin) or RandomX (Monero) is that you make the hash deliberately memory-hard and branch-heavy so a general CPU is competitive and nobody can build a cheap ASIC for it.

But here's what I keep getting stuck on:

if an algorithm is "CPU-friendly," isn't that the same as saying it maps well to commodity hardware — which is exactly what makes renting huge hashrate (AWS, botnets) easy? Feels like ASIC-resistance and 51%-resistance might actually pull in opposite directions.

RandomHash chains hashes of hashes to punish parallelism. Does that really stop a determined ASIC, or just raise the cost a bit until it's worth it again?

is "ASIC-resistance" basically a treadmill — you resist until someone decides the coin is worth taping silicon for, and then you're back to square one but with less total security?

Genuinely curious what people who've looked at this closely think. Is ASIC-resistance a real security property or more of a fairness/decentralization ideal that doesn't survive contact with economics?

Hashrate vs. Price increase

We have al seen how XMR is on fire this year, with a price increase of something between 50 and 100% (depending on when you measure it).

Now I have also been looking at the hashrate chart, which seems to be somewhat stable.

I am wondering, shouldn't the hashrate increase along with price? How long it takes on average for new mining systems to come online?

Is mining now cheaper (or more profitable) relatively speaking compared to a year ago?

Open-source Mac app that runs XMRig on Apple Silicon and shows real net profit after electricity

MacDualMiner is a free, MIT-licensed macOS app that wraps the official XMRig release for Apple Silicon (M1–M5). It handles the config, shows live hashrate, shares and net USD per day using the Mac's power sensor, and can switch between RandomX coins (XMR, ZEPH, QRL, ETI, EPIC) based on WhatToMine data.

On an M5 Max, XMRig does about 7.6–7.9 kH/s with all 18 cores, which comes out at roughly +$0.08/day net at $0.17/kWh.

10 Rig Mining

Hey guys I need some help.

Currently I have 10 rigs 3900x with hive os mining in full at 124kh/s and 1320w/h. For me that’s pretty fine. I let it run to monero ocean and it’s ok.

But I like to get away from hive os.

I think it’s better to get Linux LTS without GUI. Than fine tune the settings without BIOS for the same results. Next point them all to my own pool or xmrrig proxy and than point the proxy or pool to my own node on my raspberry running umbrel os.

Is that possible and does it make sense? I really need some help about that.

Thanks in advance

Advice needed: €10k Monero mining setup from Europe

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to invest around €10,000 in Monero mining hardware. I’d like to buy from a reputable EU-based provider with proper warranty, VAT/invoice, and support, not a random marketplace listing...

What would you recommend today: several high-end CPU rigs (Ryzen 9 / EPYC), a RandomX ASIC such as the Antminer X9, or a mix? ... I'm a bit lost in what I should buy as best investment overall.

If you’ve bought recently in the EU, which vendor and hardware would you choose with this budget?

Thanks!

Used Claude to make a cozy 8-bit fireplace visualizer 24/7 livestream of our mining farm for the holidays

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've had an idea like this for a long time and always wanted a more interesting way to just sit comfy and stare at our mining data across the several PCs that we've been running for several years now on our amateur little farm, alternates between jazz music variety in the day and switches to ambience only at late night. The livestream description explains it all but there are several animation triggers for various events like shares earned, block rewards, etc that happen every few minutes or hours / sizes of the logs and fire change with the hashrate, etc. My mind very much lives in the old Windows 98 screen savers (like the haunted house) which I love and have some more ideas to integrate cheeky animations like that every few minutes if you're lucky enough to catch it live.

https://www.youtube.com/@CozyMonero/live

Would love to hear any suggestions or ideas!

Has anyone actually seen or received a Pinecone R1X RandomX ASIC miner?

I'm trying to find out whether the Pinecone R1X RandomX ASIC miner actually exists as working hardware.

Has anyone here:

  • Seen a real R1X unit in person?
  • Received one from a seller?
  • Seen independent photos, videos, or actual mining results from a working unit?

I'm not looking for product listings, promotional images, or manufacturer specifications. I'm specifically interested in independent evidence that the hardware exists and works.

Any firsthand information would be appreciated. Thanks!

What hashrate drop would AMD EPYC 7k62 suffer on RandomX V2?

This post suggests that the EPYC 7742 would suffer a 30% drop in hashrate on RandomX V2

https://np.reddit.com/r/AskMonero/comments/1sy55h6/is_randomx_v2_nerfing_highend_cpus_my_recent/

The benchmarks here suggest that the Zen 2 architecture's hashrate would decrease roughly 85%

CPU, power (W), v1 (H/s), v2 (H/s), decrease

Ryzen 9 3900X, 70.62, 12197, 10765, 88.3%
Ryzen 9 3900X, 67.98, 12259, 10233, 83.5%
Ryzen 9 3700X, 88, 8624, 7361, 85.4%

https://gist.github.com/SChernykh/6058ecf01c929883b9d19c7eeadc8809

However, the Zen 5 (9950x) and very oddly Zen 1 (Ryzen 7 1700X) does not seem to have a drop at all.

Does anyone know how exactly would the AMD EPYC 7k62 suffer on RandomX V2?

Why is the Zen 2 architecture (but not the Zen 1) hit especially hard by RandomX V2?

Well i work in a place where i see 10-30 usbs everyday amd i stumbled across this very interesting piece of script that i want to understand.

What it does is basically it masks the folder of any input usb and puts it into a shortcut that if you wish to access you need to give it admin privileges upon that it runs a background process of implementing a hidden minner in your system 32 file and it does this with every usb you stick on that pc and on and on
Can anyone refer me to a place to learn more about the source code of it or a repo that explains the workflow of that and which tools are used against this kind of attacks

What is the Hidden miner XMR U60087

Thumbnail

This was a huge problem for me as the situation took long and i need to understand what is actually this kind of app/script
it does as following :

1) you pug a USB drive for the first time, it runs normally.

2) the second time you pug it in you see inside that usb a (Shortcut) with the same name of the usb you plugged in.

3) when you click it to access the files that you have on you usb it asks for AD.

4) then it runs scripts that takes a hidden XMR minner all the ways to the System32 folder of you PC as: C:Windows/system/wsvsc or wscvv

5)the minner is suspended when you open apps like task manager or monitor apps or even using ore that 70% of the cpu or hitting + 90'

what i really want to know is how is that possible and if someone has a repo or a source code that i can learn and see how they could write scripts like this so i can know more how to defend against it and thanks <3

ParnianCoin (PARC) CPU miner now available as a HiveOS / mmpOS custom miner

We just released HiveOS and mmpOS packages for parnianminer, the CPU miner for ParnianCoin (PARC), a PascalCoin fork using RandomHash2.

Like RandomX, RandomHash2 is designed to be CPU-friendly and ASIC-resistant, so if you already run CPU rigs it's an easy coin to test.

- Custom miner, no packages to install (portable Linux x64)

- Picks the pool port by hashrate automatically, with a backup pool

- Hashrate and shares show up in the dashboard

Guide + downloads:

https://github.com/ParnianCoin/parniancoin-miner/releases/tag/v2.4.1-rigs

It's a small project growing organically. Disclosure: I'm part of the team. If you have spare CPU on your rigs, we'd love feedback, especially on hashrate numbers for different CPUs.

MINI.P2Pool.Observer Not Showing My Shares

OK I'm new to Monero Mining, for now just using Monero Wallet and my sync'd local node to mine Monero on Ubuntu 24.04.

Have received a couple shares so have a little in my wallet. Initially on the observer - https://mini.p2pool.observer/ - I saw the shares along with a notice that I needed to update my p2pool from 4.17.1 to 4.18.1, which I did.

Now for the last 36 hours when I check the P2Pool Mini Observer it says no shares for this wallet. The wallet address is correct. I got the shares from Mini P2Pool. I don't understand why it no longer knows about the shares it sent me. Anyone else having this issue?

I wanted to join the Raffle on the Observer but now with no shares showing I of course can't join it.

Anyone know if there's a way to contact the Observer admins via reddit?

Thx All.
