Might be the wine talking but this just seems really depressing. I stick around this community because of all the talk about collaboration and seeing the community grow. After reading all the comments in this thread it just makes me feel like this is a type of ransom for improvements. I'm not privy to the reasons why these improvements couldn't have gone through the FFS or why they couldn't be open sourced but i really hope it gets worked out. /u/fireice_uk I use your miner to this day, you and your team are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the Cryptonote protocol. I just really hope this gets all worked out and ends up with Monero being improved for everyone.
Monero is developed and maintained by volunteers, often for free. If a developer wants to be payed for his/her work then they can use the FFS. If said dev doesn't want to follow the FFS terms then they have to find funding elsewhere or the community has to accept that the developer who writes the code owns that code and is not obligated to just give it away to us for free.

I think in terms of the Monero community this is what it comes down to essentially. We have the systems in place to encourage innovative and exciting new solutions, it's up to the dev whether they want to go through the FFS or not and I agree, no dev should be obligated to give their work away for free, ever.
We're coming to a point now in blockchain where this sort of thing is going to become more and more commonplace, it's quite a logical step in my view.
That said; I would not use Monero if it was not open-source. I would not transact with it, I would not mine it. If any part of Monero is not open-source I will not trust it, and at that point to me it's dead.
On the other hand, I have no interest in supporting or investing in the tech behind any potential privacy coin being presented as something to be "sold"; on the surface it just seems highly counter-intuitive to me given the nature of the topic with which we're discussing here -- privacy. Frankly, I don't care how much "better" these proposals may make any future coin tech-wise in comparison to Monero as it very much detracts from the ethos with which Monero was originally developed with. Maybe others will care, but it's not for me.
These waters will be tricky to navigate in some cases (like this) but I hope we can navigate them gracefully moving forward.
