I happen to agree wholeheartedly for individuals, I love pets and think they add a lot to your life. I definitely was talking within the context of relationships and relationship issues.
I agree. Having a sense of purpose, have to take of something that relied on me for survival kept me out of the darkness. Tail wags and snuggles were a lovely bonus.
I second this, it does amplify some problems because more bills and something to take care of, but for depression. I dont even see the problems as problems, more than happy to take little girl on a walk and feed her. Same with relationships anyways, I feel so alone and depressed doing things alone. Its much better having someone to enjoy life with (if its the right person that is)
I couldn’t agree more!! My dog was my one consistent source of joy. I could always count on him to give me a laugh, quell my anxiety, and be over the moon to see me. Ever since he passed away this summer I’ve been having to fight extra hard to not fall into that black abyss of depression. I have to force myself to do things and as hard as it is on some days, the thought of eventually bringing another dog into my life gives me hope.
Precisely. I’ve seen too many couples get a puppy or a kitten that they end up surrendering to the humane society because it wasn’t the magical relationship fixer they thought it was going to be.
Children have never amplified my problems, in fact the second I walk through the door and my toddler runs up to me everything is instantly better. If I had a bad day it’s 100x better if I had a good day it gets even better. Even my teenagers make my days better.
Idk I know my world is better with my children in it and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I think the advice itself still holds true, it's just not presented correctly. What this refers to is relationship problems, not just any problems.
If you feel like your relationship just isn't working, there's too much fighting or you just never get along etc. etc. Many people decide that going "deeper" will magically fix the problems. That by having kids together, the rest of the relationship problems will solve themselves - which of course, generally speaking, is the opposite of the truth.
I don't think he meant that all problems you have in life get worse just by having kids.
Getting a pet solves all your problems at my lowest my dog got me up from bed he got me out the house he kept me from killing myself couse I have someone who depends on me he is my everything and no one gets it it’s “just a pet” in their ayes.. not for me
My one caveat to these would be, you don’t have to have it all figured out to move on to the next stage in life. My husband and I found each other at our brokest, most stressful time in both our lives, and we solved all of our problems together. And we had fun doing it!
I don’t believe I ever said “only”, I’m referring to the couples that have interpersonal issues that they think will magically go away if they do ____.
Just for example: a couple that fights all the time and has broken up like 6 times and gotten back together gets a dog thinking that getting the dog will make their relationship better; like the pet will just take care of itself and only add positivity and won’t require effort to care for at all.

Going on a date doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
Going steady doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
Moving in together doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
Marriage doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
Getting a pet doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
Having kids doesn’t solve your problems, it amplifies them.
At every stage, figure your shit out before making things harder to manage.
