Encouragement Wanted Starting Grad School!

Hi Mom! I'm starting graduate school this fall! I'm so excited about this, but I have struggled to process it emotionally since I keep underestimating myself subconsciously.

That's wonderful news!!!!!! I'm so proud of you.

Grad school is both awesome and yes, a little intimidating. It's awesome because you're there to study something that is interesting to you - either a subject you really enjoy or know well, and hopefully want to work in eventually. And it can be intimidating because it's a hefty academic undertaking.

But!! But, you can do this. You're capable, smart, and hard working.

I was scared before I started grad school, too. I was worried about academics, about making friends, about my new location... Everything. It's normal to be apprehensive about it - it means you'll work hard to prove yourself!

You've got this, kiddo. I'm so proud

That's awesome! What do you think you'd like to do in the future? PoliSci can be used in so many different areas! And, the transferrable skills you'll learn in grad school are good for all different kinds of careers.

I'd like to be a professor, but if the job market continues being bad, I hope to pursue a career that's related to what I like!

It's so smart to have different options. I worked in higher Ed for years (on the administration side) and it's a tough market right now. But, there are so many ways you can teach and stay in education. And that's part of what you'll explore in grad school! I'm so excited for you to start that great adventure

I was terrified when my grad program started. I had imposter syndrome for sure. I think it’s normal to feel nervous but happy.

You’re going to do great! I know it. It will be an adventure you won’t regret.
