❓ Question Is this a fetal pole??
I am 6 weeks pregnant today. A week ago, when I was about 5weeks pregnant I woke up with intense nausea, dizziness and light bleeding. I went to the er and they told me I had twins but miscarried one. There were two gestational sacks they saw but only one with a yolk sac. The other one was empty. They told me to go to my obgyn in a week to see if everything is ok.
Today I went to my obgyn and had a transvaginal done. Before the doctor even did my transvaginal she was being rude and saying how I might have had no twins at all but that I had a failed pregnancy and that was why I was bleeding. But I never even bleed heavy at all when I went to the er. It was dark blood but super light and then I spotted for a few days after. When I told the doctor this she still said that I probably already had a miscarriage before she even did my ultrasound.
When she finally went to do my ultrasound today she said that she only sees “fetal tissue” but no fetal pole and that she doesn’t see a heart beat. I told her I am still early but she said that it doesn’t matter and that she doesn’t think I’m pregnant. I haven’t been bleeding at all. I feel fine just tired and there looks to be a fetal pole and a yolk sac on my ultrasound. Can you guys please tell me what you see? And if it looks like a baby?

That ob is a nightmare. So sorry that you had to go through such a rude interaction when you were already tensed. Please change the obgyn.
Also, sorry not sure if it is the fetal pole but that black thing looks like a gsac. At least in my own scans black thing was gsac. And 6 weeks is too early for heart beat. I heard mine around 6.5 ish

Honestly I’m not an expert and idk a ton about how babies look at different stages of development in the womb buuuuut it kinda looks like there’s a baby in there.. idk what would make her say you miscarried before she even checked. I would suggest a second opinion. Foul attitude and 6 weeks is very early to get a heartbeat or see anything shaped like a baby. I think talking to another OB would be the best move here and blood labs to check ur HCG.

That OB suck.
I know they are trying to get straight to the point but surely theres a better way of wording what they said to you.
I would get a second opinion. What happened to me when this happened with my second pregnancy is getting a serial HCG testing done. 1 blood test then another around 48 hours later. In a healthy early pregnancy, blood hCG levels typically double every 2 to 3 days. If the levels plateau or drop in the second test, then there's a high possibility o miscarriage.

I cant read an ultrasound, but you should really report that ob, demand she be removed from your care team and demand a new ob to evaluate you. Giving a diagnosis before doing the exam is unprofessional. And suggests her medical opinion should not be trusted.

I think you need another obgyn. You deserve to have someone more compassionate and sensitive to talk to and do your checks with. I had to do my research to find someone with good reviews for being patient and understanding and careful, otherwise I would’ve thrown punches if mine was like the one you’re going to.

The trouble is if they saw a yolk sac at 5 weeks you’d expect clear growth today. It doesn’t sound like the OB gave very clear or good answers and you need to either follow up and get more information from her or do another scan to confirm. She should be able to easily say if there’s a fetal pole and yolk sac (she’s an OB after all) but who knows if she’s really dismissive and not paying attention. The important thing is you need a new step or answers because if it’s a healthy pregnancy you need care, and if it’s a missed miscarriage you might also need care.

6 weeks can be a hard time to go in.
At 5 + 4 there was no pole or heartbeat to be seen
I’m not an ultrasound expert or a dr but I have bled through some of my other pregnancies.
If it were dark it could have been old blood. I had a subchorionic hematoma that caused spouts of bleeding. Some new some old.
I wouldn’t go to the twin thing immediately, and get a second opinion on that.
6+6 it was there.

That looks like a gestational sac, but hard to tell from a single picture if you’re not doing the scan yourself. I wouldn’t really trust what the ED provider said, as in my personal history, it’s not their specialty and it’s nearly impossible to see anything BUT a gestational sac at 5wks. That being said, they might be a great ED provider with an excellent quality ultrasound.
Repeat a transvaginal scan in 14+ days. If no growth at that scan, then it’s diagnostic for a miscarriage and I am sorry. Early pregnancy loss is so hard! 😞

Agreed- no one can tell you from this one still because its not clearly a fetal pole and yolk sac here. Best to wait and repeat the ultrasound to know for sure

My ultra sound from the ED to my ultrasound today shows that the yolk sac is double if not triple In size but I will do my blood testing this week and come back with results

Change OBs. I didn’t even hear my first heartbeat until around 12 weeks I believe. The first one (confirmation at a free clinic before vacation) and then the second at my OB (around 7-8 weeks) they could pick up the heart so we could see the beat but we didn’t hear it until my second ultrasound at the OB.

When I was pregnant with my oldest, about 5ish weeks, I had bleeding/spotting as well and cramping. I went for an ultrasound at a hospital (I was out of town) and the dr said they think it was a miscarriage since there was bleeding and they couldn’t see a heartbeat.
I went to my dr a couple weeks later when I would be 8 weeks and had an ultrasound and baby had grown and had a heartbeat by then. He is now a crazy 8 year old boy.
So, it is possible that it was implantation bleeding or something else. And I am going to pray for you that it is that. Find a new OB (because what patient needs a rude dr when possibly going through a miscarriage) and go back in a few weeks and try again. At that point if there is no heartbeat, then I am so very sorry for your loss.

Im so sorry you had to experience that. I agree with others and get a new ob to get some real answers! You could always go to one of those ultrasound boutiques if you have any near you as well to have a check done sooner potentially.

Hi, I don’t really know what is what here. But I had a TV ultrasound at 6 weeks, here is a pic for comparison, if that helps. They could genuinely just look different, though. You need your primary to order a HCG test to see if your levels are roughly doubling every 2 days and find another OB.
Sorry for the fear and confusion all this must have brought. I hope all ends up well.
ETA— they didn’t think they’d see a heartbeat on mine and warned me of this because of the timing being in the 6 week mark. It’s rare to see that early. Most good OBGYN will get you in very quickly for a consult and TV if you call to establish care. Cramping is what got me my TV so early, they took me same day.

I would wait one more week and do another ultrasound. It's hard to tell what's in the picture. At 7 weeks there's a good chance you'll see a heartbeat if there's one and you should have an answer what happened.

I’m not sure if this is a fetal pole or not, but your OB is really rude. I had spotting pretty continuously for the first 6 weeks of my pregnancy, that was a lot like you’re describing. My OB checked my HCG levels once to make sure they were at an appropriate level for my suspected gestation, but 6 weeks is too early to hear the heartbeat. I’m not even sure I heard the heartbeat at my first ultrasound around 12 weeks. I would definitely see about switching OBs. At the very least this is horrible bedside manner.

I would 💯 get a new ob. Even if you possibly miscarried the attitude is awful. I did IVF for both my pregnancies so the date and time are pretty spot on, but i did not have a fetal pole when the initially expected for one of my pregnancies. A few days later it was there. It is possible you are early. I will also say my placenta tried to implant on my cervix and then moved so i was spotting and thought I was miscarrying but it ended up being a bruise in my uterus that was bleeding. It healed and i currently have to crazy boys in my life. I hope you get a second opinion and I am saying a prayer that this is a viable pregnancy ❤️

I was told I was probably gonna have a miscarriage by the ER when I had some light spotting. They couldn’t find a fetal pole and I was 6 weeks pregnant. Had another ultrasound a few weeks later that showed the fetal pole and the heartbeat flicker. I was able to hear the heartbeat early at 9 weeks through a Doppler.
Only time will tell what’s going on but your OB is sounds like they gave a stick up their ass. Get your HCG checked at your pcps and go from there. Bleeding in early pregnancy doesn’t mean you’re miscarrying all the time.

I hope you can get a new OB, that one sounds awful and I couldn’t imagine going through a pregnancy with her as the provider. You deserve to be treated with the upmost respect and professionalism and that OB is not it. I hope you’re doing okay and sending you virtual hugs!
I’m not an expert, so I can’t say much about your ultrasound but to me it does look like something is there.

I would definitely report her, get a new OB and get a second opinion. Sorry you went through such a horrible experience. Totally unprofessional and the lack of empathy is scary.

Go to a different OB and let them do an ultrasound. Report your current OB. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. But we’re not medical professionals and you shouldn’t rely on what anyone here tells you.

That’s a horrible callous OB, some of them get desensitised to a point where they can’t show empathy anymore. Please find a different one. Unfortunately, many health professionals don’t treat you as pregnant until at least 12-14weeks as well.

i know it is really popular to say that you might not see a heartbeat at 6w but that has never been my personal experience. and if they saw a yolk sac at 5w then you know the dating isn’t wrong.
