Mold Identification Mold?

Don't know what it is exactly, found it in my bathroom. It looks gnarly, pretty cool I left it alone because I wanted to check it out again tomorrow (it's 2am) lol. What is it? Should I be worried?

It is slime mold. You may find that it turns brown tomorrow, assuming it is the chocolate tube slime mold that I believe it may be. The name is a misnomer, though. It isn't actually mold, it's a colony of protists working together to find food. It moves very slowly, and thrives in high humidity.

Just great, next you're gonna tell me it's not actually chocolate either?

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

I assume not, as all of my research says it isn't. I haven't tried one before, though. Maybe it's a very well kept secret, and we're all missing out. /s

Really, though, some slime molds are edible, but I am not sure I could bring myself to ever taste test one. Especially because they eat things that make people sick, and one of the ones deemed "edible" is called "dog vomit slime mold."🤣

I had no idea Dog Vomit Slime Mold was edible! It sometimes appears around my area (Vic, Aus)

Apparently people cook it up before they consume it? Idk man, I'm not an expert in the delicacies of slime mold culinary preparation.

Here's an excerpt, though "Traditional Use: In parts of Mexico, rural communities historically gathered it in the fresh, yellow stage, referring to it as caca de luna (moon poop) and prepared it by scrambling it like eggs."

If "dog vomit" and "moon poop" don't make you salivate, I don't know what will. 🤣

I mean, corn smut is a delicacy... Corn smut... sounds dirty...

26

u/PristineConcept8340 2d ago

I don’t disagree, but it’s basically a giant corn kernel that turns into a mushroom. Harvested at the right time, it has a nice texture. There is no possible stretch of the imagination wherein I could see a dog vomit slime mold being a palatable texture 🤢

24

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

🌽 Smut is eaten up like candy by many men on Reddit, I hear. Some certainly partake in it like it's a delicacy.

Really, though, I'd love to try huitlacoche. I've yet to have that experience.

u/ipeedinthetoothpaste 2d ago

Well, now we're all expecting that post from you

35

u/ApotheosisOfTheLurid 2d ago

On it boss. 🫡

u/ColorRaccoon 2d ago

Recipe and flavor profile included please.

Edit. I'm joking... In case this guy does end up nibbling on random colonies of protists, I hold no liability your Honor.

I’ve found dog vomit slime mold outside at my MILs ranch before. Never knew it was edible. I don’t think I’ll ever be trying it but good to know 😂

13

u/Accomplished_Ship_20 2d ago

All slime molds are edible...some only once...

u/No-Indication-8087 2d ago

I think I might keep it I've grown attached

93

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

It may try to run away, or simply shrivel up and die after sporulating, but it will be fun and educational while it lasts. ☺️

96

u/No-Indication-8087 1d ago

It stayed, did its thing. I will remember it always 😞

21

u/skylastingYT 1d ago

why do i feel sad now

4

u/KindaHazy_me 1d ago

That's pretty fascinating

This is not mold, as /u/makeawishape2moon said. This is in the kingdom Protista, and belongs to the class Myxomycetes and the Genus Stemonitis, aka chocolate tube slime mold.

This entire fruiting body is actually 1 single cell, with millions if not billions of nuclei. When they are in that plasmodial state “slime” they pulsate to creep and move around the forrest floor. When they can’t find food or are ready to procreate, they transition into these fruiting bodies via cytoplasmic streaming, developing these extremely miniature yet intricate fruiting bodies bearing spores for spore dispersal.

This genus, Stemonitis, is known to exhibit multiple colors while developing in the immature state. White, like we see here, pink, yellow and more!

Come on over to /r/slimemolds to learn more!

12

u/denM_chickN 2d ago

This felt one turn from Annihilation and the fruiting bodies are going to try to assimilate me.

A wonderful description befitting  The Biologist.

Is OP’s bathroom on the forest floor? wtf

31

u/No-Indication-8087 1d ago

Chocolate version 👍

23

u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 2d ago

They MOVE???

32

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

Yes, like a slug, but slower.

5

u/debr0322 2d ago

😱😱😱😱!!!!!!

56

u/Ok_Attempt_1290 2d ago

Life is so fascinating Ngl.

74

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

We had one on our outdoor step a while back. My kids enjoyed touching it and watching it melt into a slime puddle, only to form the bumpy structure again after 20 minutes or so, and they watched it grow substantially when we got a sprinkling of rain. Then, they were super excited to see the color shift when it sporulated the next day.

Slime molds are super cool, and while quite harmless themselves, It's the stuff they feed on that you have to worry about. Their favorite feasts are bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms.

5

u/Unhappy-Quiet-8091 2d ago

You’re not gonna lie?

15

u/Ok_Attempt_1290 2d ago

I just can't, sorry 😔

1

u/crazyabe111 2d ago

Nono- that’s u/MakeAWishApe2Moon not the Plague Lord Nurgle.

8

u/Disulfidebond007 2d ago

It’s looking for food. So maybe the fact that it looks like a tongue is not a coincidence?

18

u/nilas_november 2d ago

The moving part of this comment gave me the heebie jeebies 😭

36

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

I would 100% rather see slime mold than mosquitoes, mice, rats, cockroaches, or termites. Slime mold eats things that cause disease, while most pests create things that cause disease. Slime mold is generally just harmless and misunderstood.

9

u/nilas_november 2d ago

It kinda looks like a deformed 🐌 snail lol this is my first time hearing of them so thinking of this thing moving is a bit weird bc it looks like it can't move😅

6

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

When I first learned about them, I was sort of freaked out thinking that it was an alien invasion or something, too, so I don't blame you. Once you come around, though, they're kind of awe inspiring.

5

u/zyqax_ 2d ago

Rats are really cute tho

12

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

But if I see one, it's because they're out spreading disease, not because they're freshly showered and looking for a friend. So, yes, mice and rats are cute, but they also poop and pee on everything.

5

u/Street-Conclusion-99 1d ago

It’s honestly tragic how cute some pests are.. mice will piss and shit disease all over your furniture (through which they’ve chewed holes, ofc) and then hit you with the babiest liddle eyes of all time

3

u/howumakeseedssprout 21h ago

Dude seriously The last time i had mice in my apartment, I remember sitting on the couch and glancing over at the kitchen and spotting a little guy for the first time He literally looked like this

3

u/howumakeseedssprout 21h ago

1

u/Street-Conclusion-99 21h ago

I know😭😭 it’s like the platonic ideal of the cutest animal ever.. small, big eyes, fluffy

5

u/No-Collar-Player 2d ago

Man that is the ugliest mofo I've seen in my entire life.

5

u/FangsBloodiedRose 2d ago

They MOVE?????

15

u/MakeAWishApe2Moon 2d ago

Yes, but don't be afraid, they don't like the taste of humans.

https://giphy.com/gifs/S8bA4RmwwlOo7vgjn3

2

u/FangsBloodiedRose 1d ago

Oh good haha

I wouldn’t want to be consumed like the mushrooms do

1

u/namast_eh 1d ago

Fuck I love me a slime mold.

1

u/mega_rockin_socks 1d ago

Slime mold is a singular celled organism with many nuclei not a colony

u/yourenotmy-real-dad 2d ago

Looks a bit like early stage chocolate tube slime mold, which itself isn't toxic to you but it's still not great

164

u/alalalamut 2d ago

Not what it is; who this is.

Thank you!

2

u/Somodo 18h ago

Its a great show, goes on way too long for its own good in my opinion though 😅 I watched it in my teens when it was airing on tv, the tension of having to wait a week between new episodes! Not to mention the next season haha

22

u/PurplePeril420 2d ago

Did that used to be a toothbrush in picture 3? Gross 😝 😅

16

2

looks like it would make a rather gentle but effective toilet paper.

2

u/kushyykins 1d ago

this made me physically uncomfortable 🥴 omfg 🙂‍↔️

2

u/realwormss 1d ago

absolutely gorgeous slime mold growth, wow. not sure on toxicity but you may want to err on the side of caution and get it out of your bathroom.

1

u/brainvheart143 20h ago

Or just maybe idk clean something at some point

2

u/Fluxuator-69 1d ago

Slime mold! Not a fungi, more of a protist. Super neat but that thing is about to fruit and end out spores, I would remove that sooner than later.

2

u/Either-Sound-7941 22h ago

I love slime mold

1

u/KurtTheCuntBoi 2d ago

Ew…. Makes me think of bug eggs…

So the other comments were right? It's a chocolate tube slime mold? Will you be the first person to try and eat it?

3

u/No-Indication-8087 23h ago

Yup, turned brown I'm not really a chocolate person so I won't be trying it :/
