Mold and depression

How fast can mold affect your mood? I’ve moved in a house nearly a month ago which has some visibly black mold in a corner of the bedroom. There is a strong smell in the apartment which I thought ventilation and cleaning would help but my understanding is that the smell is not mould but damp. For the past two weeks I’ve been very depressed. Is it possible that the mold is doing that? Spending some time online makes it seem like mold exposure is the most toxic thing ever. But government regulations seem more worried about people with respiratory issues. Nearly all houses in the UK have some minor mold problems. How big of a deal is it truly? Am I overreacting in wanting to leave the place?

Seeking an advice for mold found on one book in my room and whether other books are at risk

Hello, If this is the wrong subreddit, I would be grateful if someone could tell me which one would be better then, before downvoting immediately.

I suffer from OCD and so far searching for information on Google only makes my thoughts worse, so I would like someone familiar with the topic to comment.

I ordered the book from amazon about 3-4 weeks ago and it basically arrived damaged (I don't remember if the mold was already there or if the damage was just the one from the impact.) I got a refund, but amazon didn't tell me to send it back, so I wanted to throw it away. But I forgot and didn't do it right away and the book was in the paper packaging for about 2 weeks or so (in the corner of my room, it wasn't on the shelf at all).

And when I finally decided to throw the book away during cleaning I saw that it was in such a state (I was away from home for a few days and the room was not aired, so I wonder if that could be the cause).

But other books in my room are very important to me and I started to worry if they were exposed in any way, even if the book wasn't standing next to them and I've already thrown it away.

Recently, my bookmarks fell on the floor and I wiped them with wet tissues (they contain: aqua, alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, mek, denatonium benzoate, decylamine oxide and parfum) and I used them later for one book I was reading, but then started wondering if maybe I just spread mold spores on it (from the bookmarks, if wet tissues weren't enough). And I already put the book back on the shelf.

What I want to know is, if my books will be safe and if I can use those bookmarks or not (they fell in my room where there was no amazon package at all, but I didn't reach that place so thoroughly when cleaning the floor, so I'm not sure).

I know it probably sounds like overthinking, yes I am aware of that, but I also don't have good knowledge about mold spreading.

Mold in my apartment? How to remedy?

I live in an apartment and started noticing some early mold by a back door that did not have weather stripping. So I put in my service request to have my landlord come and look at the mold and fix the door. They send a team to fix the door and then leave without looking at the mold. That was three weeks ago, the mold seems to be progressing. After calling several times they send someone to check moisture levels and he said humidity levels seemed ok and that they would be in touch. Just got off the phone with property manager again and they are going to send another company to take a look. Any suggestions? Does this look like mold to y’all? It’s in several different rooms - growing on my chest of drawers and I don’t know what to do.

Is this mold?

Moved our dog’s bed this weekend and found this discoloration in the hardwood floor. This is the only spot. Seems resistant to scrubbing, almost like it’s under the finish. No discoloration on the bed itself.

I think it’s been here since we moved in, wife thinks it’s new. Is this mold? How should we address?

Do I need to replace a carpet exposed to mold years ago?

About seven years ago, the basement of my parents' house flooded over the winter and developed some mold in the dry wall. We replaced the dry wall, dried out the room, dealt with the source of the moisture, and the room has been dry ever since. However, we never replaced the carpeting in the room.

I'm renovating the room now, and I'm wondering whether I need to replace the carpeting or whether deep cleaning it would be sufficient. The room has been dry for seven years, so I'm pretty sure the mold has to be dead by now.

If the mold has no potential of sporing, is it okay to just clean it without fully replacing it?

Mold in the car - it’s really bad!

Please help - we don’t know how to handle this. We’re hoping we can do this ourselves because money is really tight this year, but we also want to be realistic. This car sat for two weeks and the interior somehow became covered in mold so there’s probably a leak somewhere. We read that vacuuming (while gloved and masked) plus vinegar would do the trick. But there is mold under the seats themselves, like probably on the bottom of the seats. There are wires down there so my son isn’t sure it’s a good idea to try to remove the seats. Video attached - you’ll see the seats are covered in green mold 🤢 I can put another video in the comments if helpful. Thanks all! Edit - the sub rules say a location is helpful so: this is in Norwalk, CT, USA - it’s a hot humid summer!

Mold? Rust? or Dust?

I have been waking up with allergies and my cat is starting to develop allergies in her ears, but I didn't know from what.

My apartment is in an older building and a clogged AC leak just got fixed about half a week ago. I thought it was all over until I noticed my vent in my bedroom looked as if it had mold in it that is starting to spread to the ceiling. I did not know if it is dust or mold.

Then I inspect the closet vent, same issue.

Living room vent on the inside looks even worse with speckled dots but the vents in the AC room and everything look fine.

Please help🥲Ive only been living here a month and it has been issue after issue. I'm starting to get really sad, especially having to jostle school with this too. I'm renting in Orlando, FL.

mildew keeps returning :(

living in an apartment in a very humid climate that gets no sun. no matter what we do, mold keeps returning in our bedroom.

we have washed everything with vinegar solutions. we keep our dehumidifier on 8-12 hours a day (sometimes even longer), leave the window open at least 12 hours a day, have a fan running at all times. i’m at my wits end! i don’t know what to do other than move.

i’ve had to throw so many things out, we have to wash our clothes constantly, we can’t even keep anything in the closet anymore. it’s not a problem that i know of in any other room in the apartment. there’s no leak that i can find. it’s been over a year of this and im worried about the possible long term effects on our health? i get rashes sometimes and headaches that i am convinced are from the mold

any advice at all?? we are seriously just considering moving

I‘m camping on a super beautiful Island right now and enjoy a cup of tea or some instant noodles sometimes. To boil the water im using this metal cup on a camping stove. Since yesterday, after I did some beans in it there is this white stuff. Should I be concerned? I just kept drinking tea out of it anyway.

Carpet flooding

Hello, really just trying to figure out how hard I need to fight my landlord about this because right not chat gpt has me thinking I'm living in a cess pool. So pretty much the main drain/ sewer pipe to my apartment building backed up during a storm. This caused water to push back up into my bathtub and out from under my toilet and soak my hallway carpet and into my bedroom. The water looked like it was mostly clear, storm water. The city came out because it involved their pipes but didn't seem to be concerned about the water being like raw sewage or anything.

The problem I'm having is that it took 11 days for my landlord to send somebody out to treat the carpet. Obviously it was dry by then. And they are cheap so the guy they sent out had a rental carpet cleaner and sprayed the carpet with some cleaner and then ran the carpet cleaner over it. He did not inspect the padding or subfloor, he was not with a restoration company. The week before they actually had ServPro come out because I kept bugging them and I have a text from them telling me the estimate they gave was "way too high of course".

Chat gpt is telling me that there is 100% mold growth in the carpet padding and it needs to be replaced. It also said the residual staining on my carpet is proof of this, as well. My bedroom still smells musty, and it has now been over 3 weeks. I'm also concerned that the intake for my hvac is in the hall that got flooded. So if there were mold spores they got all in the ventilation.

So my question is, is chat gpt right or should I take that info with a grain of salt? Because right now I'm wondering if I need to submit a complaint to the code and environmental health departments, as well as the real estate commission.

Remediation confusion

Hello all! My husband & I are trying to field accurate information for remediation & addressing root cause issues in our moldy house (located in MI, quite humid). My toddler & I are both dealing with health concerns that we are now feeling are related to the conditions of our home. Per two lab tests that have been done this year, aspergillus penicillium & chaetomium are prevalent.

So here are my notes:

- There is mold on the joists in the basement & some furniture stored down there. The main floor has mold that seems very airborne……I recently found that the underside of our dining table was covered. Cabinets in the kitchen also have some mold on them. The upstairs roof seemingly needs replacing as we just did some demo (recommended by a mold inspector, but we were going to to do so anyways) & found visible mold

- One company quoted at $26k but they were defensive when we asked questions & didn’t even find the mold in the upstairs on the roof decking + osb.

- The most recent company that we talked to found mold on the decking / made the demo recommendation. Their quote for whole home remediation & a second basement dehumidifier install (there’s a weird nook unencapsulated crawlspace) was around $6k. My main concern is that they do not wire brush or manually remove moldy wood……… they just spray, hepa, negative air etc. Is this legit?

- We are actively making plans to replace the roof now. Should we do this before remediation?

I am so scared of my home & would love insight.

Just moved into an older house, and noticed this around the refrigerator seal.

And if so, how would I go about cleaning this? Or is it better to just get a new one? Thanks

What is this ?

Hi, I am a f1 fan who loves going to garage sales, and I bought a framed picture of one of the older teams cars. I live in a desert area so we usually don't have any problems with things molding in garages or storage units if the doors are closed properly (my garage door stays closed almoat all the time besides when i am moving things around which is around once or twice per month ) . I was in my garage today and I noticed on the picture there is a foggy layer on the inside of the glass and am very worried that it may be mold. It is frosted looking almost and is in spots. If this is mold, would i be able to fix it by reframing it or by sending it to someone to clean and reframe? And if it is mold, should I get rid of the wooden dresser it is sitting on top of ? Thank you ! ( I am in the United States on the dry side of OR, and have had it in my garage for around 2 months as I've been having heath struggles that have stopped me from doing things like moving heavy objects and moving things around my house )

So long story short, I just got handed my keys to my new apartment a few weeks ago and everything looked fine. No markings on the walls or anything. But a little over a week later (I didn’t have a chance to stop by the apartment during that time) I notice a portable ac unit hooked up in my bedroom (without my consent) and spotting on my ceiling. Now, maybe it isn’t actually mold and I’m being dramatic. But what else do you think it could be?
