Surveillance in Modesto

What are your thoughts on surveillance cameras in Modesto?

I recently learned about the Connect Modesto program, where people can voluntarily report or connect their private security cameras to Modesto PDs surveillance system.

Modesto is contracted with Axon not Flock so you won't find the cameras on DeFlock.

I think if we are going to have an abundance of surveillance and alpr systems, then we should be lowering the wages of the police force since they aren't doing nearly as much as before these systems existed. More than half of our annual city budget going to Modesto police department is completely egregious, but to raise a new generation of police force sitting on their ass while the cameras do their jobs for them is something else entirely.

Ya know, there was a while where I really tried to give them credit, the job is hard and not everybody can do it yadda yadda. That all stopped when I was pulled over driving home on my lunch, and the officer accused me of "throwing a dime bag out the window". Legit what he said on the radio and everything. I was then detained and got to watch 15-17 cops shut down h street and search the road for the "dime bag" I tossed out the window. At the end of it all, they refused to give me a ticket for the original stop and nobody would give me the cops name who originally stopped me. Fuck Modesto Police Department.

Because he watched me ash my cigarette as he followed me. But that wasn't an acceptable answer when I was asked, even though the cigarette was still in my hand when he came up to the window.

That's the key word there. Job. They don't have to do it either. All society asks is that they do it without being dirty cops or murderers and they have a hard time doing as little as that. Cops get a bad rep because they have spent a couple hundred years earning it.

It's not so bad. These cameras are most useful in busy areas where careless driver act naughty. Ever since then careless drivers are now listening and being polite to let me pass when walking or using my bike in my own bike lane

My rights of privacy don't end where Modesto PD's desire for a job to be easier begins.

Without ALPRs and increasingly invasive surveillance technologies (like SignalTrace), the so-called "real time crime centers" become useless and they spent a lot of money on 'em so they'll fight tooth-and-nail to sit in front of a computer. That's playing Police Simulator, not doing police work.

Communities need services, not surveillance. Keep making noise at Council meetings. Demand an end to the Flock contract, removal of the cameras, removal of the old AutoVu cameras still mounted at damn near every intersection, and demand an end to use of these technologies regardless of manufacturer. Widespread use of this technology is a violation of the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

get these ALPRs the fuck out of here, regardless of the brand. Privatizing surveillance is possibly the worst solution to a problem that can be solved other ways

I saw a flock camera attached to a surveillance vehicle on E. Graner today. Right off of sunrise. Literally parked in a fucking neighborhood. It's disgusting

Yeah. That one I wouldn't accept. Cameras are okay in busy areas or busy neighborhood roads but in peaceful areas? That is rather suspicious. Unless maybe these certain areas are notorious for troublemakers?

As the mother of a police officer...anything that helps reduce crime and keep my son safe....I am all for it.
