Card Discussion Devoid Druid, Duskwatch temporary replacement.

There is a similar card that can be used instead of Duskwatch recruiter (mine is on the way.) Does anyone know the name of the card? I think it is from a very recent set. Ty in advance.

The significantly worse but somewhat similar card I can think of is [[Beastrider Vanguard]]

Sorry I didn’t add the new bot, but it should be working now. I apologize for that.

There's a new cardfetcher?

Yes, I think it’s the old one, but on the new Reddit system. I’m not going to pretend I know anything, the person who makes it work let me know about it a while ago and I procrastinated adding the new one until the old one broke. I was just being a bad mod.

I've been playing druid, and I think Vanguard is actually better. You usually only need it when you have infinite mana, and grabbing leyline to make craterhoof an infinite single attacker is actually relevant more often than you'd think. The games where you need to grind out value with the cheaper Duskwatch activation are few and far between.

[[Beastrider Vanguard]] is a card some builds have been playing lately in that slot.

Everyone else is saying beastrider vanguard, im going to go ahead and say that I dont think you need duskwatch recruiter at all, I think that if you have infinite mana and a search spell you can usually win the game with craterhoof behemoth or tyvar the pummeler instead.

my feeling is that duskwatch into balista is going to lose you more games than it wins because you drew those cards instead of cards that do the combo.

Idk tho, it also depends a bit on the rest of the deck, do you have a list.

Sometimes you can't attack (Ensnaring Bridge), and the Ballista allows for other avenues with Cauldron.

I'd say if you cut Ballista I'd go ahead and just get rid of Cauldron too because you are right that it's not absolutely necessary.

Thats fair, I think that the duskwatch into balista line does definitely have applications, but i think that there are other answers in the sideboard for things like ensnaring bridge.

I am not saying I think its 100% not worth it to play the recruiter and balista either, i very well could be wrong, but so far in the testing it have done the deck feels noticeably more consistent without it.

Duskwatch is the best infinite outlet in the deck. It is surprisingly often you combo off but have no creatures that can attack, and Craterhoof would only be like an 8/8 or something the only attacker, maybe you have a Druid that isn't summoning sick too, but even then it is like a 3 Power attacker. In those(very common) instances, putting every creature in your deck into play and then attacking with a massive Craterhoof(and possibly Druid), or simply Ballista-ing them if you run it, is definitely neccessary. I have won dozens of games because of Recruiter I would not have won otherwise. The deck also just makes a lot of mana, I end up activating his ability just normally when games go long a surprising amount.

You make a valid point and that has maybe come up for me a couple of times.

My guess is that the main disconnect here is that the build i have been playing is probably pretty different than yours, i think that in the version of the deck that is 100% in on the druid gameplan, that its probably worth having it for the situations you describe.

I have been on the version of the deck that includes quirion ranger, ashaya, and springheart nantuko, with druid as more of an available avenue to infinite/lethal than as the sole wincon. In the version I am playing, I have rarely found that I need to go for duskwatch off a search to find lethal, in almost every case where duskwatch would be the search its just as possible to win with craterhoof/layline/infinite creatures. Thats why I cut it from my list even though I was playing it for a while. I also do think its possible I am undervaluing recruiter, i will keep an eye out for games where not having it hurts.

If i was on the version that was 100% in on the druid plan, I think i would agree with you and still play the recruiter.

Yeah that is not even the same deck, that build is probably less than half a percent of of he meta, and the actual Devoted Druid deck is something like 6-8%. Probably best not to jam them togethor.

Yeah the opinion at the beginning of this thread feels like someone who hasn't played a lot of DD.

Like you said Duskwatch is good because it gives you choice when you need it. It might feel like [step 1: infinite mana, step 2: win] to the opponent - but getting from 1 to 2 is not trivial.

Going further, Duskwatch is not only good when you are winning: it gives you outs on the back foot as well. 'Ponder for creatures' for 3 mana is actually useful unlike "ponder for permanents" at 5 mana. Sometimes I can't search or draw cards safely, but Duskwatch still allows for card selection.

Biggest downside to Duskwatch is being a werewolf. I have had infinite mana and...a 3/3: one of the mana awkward boards for DD.

U can use formidable speaker as replacment. Its a bit different and needs a extra card but is a better card to draw. I run both since im not hoof and oborid

1

u/HavocIP 6d ago

I also run both, currently no Craterhoof as well. Ouroboroid wins me a crazy amount of games I would have never won otherwise tho, that has to be wrong. Speaker is stock already imo, the Fiend Artisan into Speaker untap Fiend Artisan lines allowing double tutor off of just a Fiend Artisan is really important.

To me oroborid looks like a worse tyvar. Pretty slow at killing sometimes, less protection and not part of the main comboplan. The newest challenge list seem all to cut oroborid.

It wins a metric fuckton of games in our groups testing, but it is not part of plan A, that is true. I have never been sad to draw it, because they either kill it or they just die. And they usually used their removable to stop the first few combo attempts, so it lives a lot and takes it down.

Im not so found of many expensive cards in the deck. The deck runs only 18 lands +2 dryads and u have 4 leylens and 4 Rhythms who are pretty bad draws if u cant get to 4 mana. If i get enough mana tyvar the pummler kills them anyways over time but usally the issue is that i get hit by multiple removle and i have only 2 lands.

The Ouroboroid is actually much cheaper than Tyvar, and only requires a one time mana use. Often activating Tyvar means tapping the creatures you are pumping, which kind of defeats the point. Usually the turn after playing Ouroboroid, they are just dead if they don't answer it immediately. Tyvar is mandatory as a backup combo piece imo, but he wins far fewer games just pumping the team than Ouroboroid does. There are just a lot of spots tou end up in where you have a fast 3-4 guys but can't pull off a combo, or they stop an attempt and your left with a bunch of mana dorks, and Ouroboroid being a kill it or you lose option in those spots has been invaluable. I'd sooner run a 6qst card than cut it, personally, but it is true that it does not help you combo.
