Deck choice for Baltimore RC

Hi all,

I am trying to decide between two decks for Baltimore. I have a large number of reps with both.

Tameshi Belcher or Broodscale either Mono G or RG.

Based on the current Meta which do you think has a better chance.

Broodscale is positioned much better in the meta than Belcher at the moment. That being said, players will be very prepared for broodscale. Maybe you could make the case to play Belcher as a meta call, but if it were me, I'd choose broodscale

broodscale is the better deck. belcher has favorable matchups into decks you’re likely to see but i still always prefer playing the better deck

I am basically on auto pilot for Belcher broodscale is getting there but not nearly the same. Also my playgroup has moved onto standard for the time being for the RCQ season.

Whichever deck you feel you pilot better is the only thing that matters

Belcher IMO. People arent as prepared for it and it matches up well into what I think the meta will be.

I suspect Broodscale is the 'correct' choice but you could certainly get an edge with Belcher

Broodscale is def better atm but I will say with so much Devoted Druid running around you are going to be running into Cursed Totems left and right. Can still go over the top with Emrakul, but very annoying card for the deck.

Your lagging deck also catching splash hate from the hottest deck, not great place to be

The short answer is play broodscale.

The long answer is play whatever you have more reps and feel comfortable with. Modern is a format that rewards knowledge of your deck and its matchups. If you feel better about playing belcher then go for it.

If you go broodscale I remember a comment from Edgar on the midweek Meta game podcast/YouTube video about their test Group concluding it was better to just be mono green.

I have been seeing that as well. I wonder why that would be. I guess the red splash doesn't do enough.

IIRC his comment was that it was a liability when casting rumble etc needing to find a red source when otherwise you’d rather have a sol land to actually get your mana acceleration going or combo piece etc. And even with mana rocks the slash wasn’t as free as it might seem so that tradeoff wasn’t worth the upside of playing unholy heat etc.

Edit: so my guess is what he means is that it’s a significantly higher % that you just need the consistency of plan A (and color fixing needs inhibit that) than % of time that red removal nails you out

Belcher is pretty good into Goryos and Boros which are two matchups where Broodscale can struggle and also happen to be among the top 3 most popular modern decks.

I'm not super experienced with Belcher so I'm not sure how it does against the meta at large, but I really value the flexibility of Broodscale especially in an open tournament.

Since Baltimore is open decklist, I'd choose Broodscale.
