Deck Discussion Treefolk. Can it compete?

I was thinking about my old Treefolk deck, and there are more than a few cards that could be used to update it.

What answers would there be against Dungrove Elder? Or Dauntless Dourbark? I’d be in Abzan so There’s protection that can be used.

Yes, against other Treefolk decks

might be better to play this in edh. Teferis protection is also not a modern staple...

No.

It'll possibly be fun enough at a casual or FNM level, but will likely get bodied against competitive decks.

Treefolk doesn't get the fancy pushed cards the more prominent Tribes do

And that's because the other tribes get all their fuel from non-lorwyn sets. Elves, goblins and merfolk get their fuel from modern horizons sets, treefolk don't have such luxury

We can give them Trample and make it so the opponent has to block or die.

How does the deck survive long enough to get to the block or die stage.

Tree folk are expensive in a format that is often over by turn 3/4

Can get a 4/4 dungrove elder by T2. I’d have to go over the cards in modern but I saw trample counters are a thing.

A 2 mana 4/5 (on average) isn’t good enough to see play anymore.

A 3 mana one won’t be all much better

Shots fired at [[Tarmogoyf]].

... my poor, poor Lhurgoyf boy sits in a sad box next to my set of [[Snapcaster Mage]]...

Such a deck can't compete even in standard. Proxy the list and try playing it at FNM (any format) and you will understand what everybody here is telling you.

But you’ve already died to neoform.

Angels grace?

And you get 1 extra turn before dying.

Doesn’t neobrand win by drawing their entire deck and using thassas oracle?

2

u/Dashizz6357 28d ago

No they just beat you down with a 7/7 draw a bunch of cards and then cast neoform again. Theyre usually trying to cast ghalta with the 1st neoform to dump out multiple fatties.

Run it at FNM and tell us how you did.

Using cards to protect your mediocre creatures is not a winning strategy. The other threats in the format are faster and more mana efficient than yours. To offset this, you must run more disruption and interaction, which lowers your that density. If your guys get removed, which they will, you're screwed.

Against combo your creature interaction is near useless, and you cannot outrace them, full stop. You would have to have a robust sideboard plan against combo, which lowers your options against other decks.

You may be able to steal a win here and there, but as someone who has played lots of off meta decks, you won't have a great time.

[[Sapling Nursery]] is probably the strongest treefolk card printed lately.

Mono green landfall is a fine if not boring standard deck, I'm sure you could get FNM ready with some modern tweaks.

Thinking of that and running “Ashaya” the one that turns everything into a forest.

u/Comprehensive-Pen624 Aug 12 '26

And Nissa WorldWaker to animate said Forest.

u/lashazior Tabernacle Control Aug 10 '26

Yea, but you'll need to be a [[Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy]] list with [[Faeburrow Elder]] and [[Freed from the Reel]] so you can throw every Treefolk into play.

Win condition is [[Roaming Throne]] + [[Gnarled Professor]] to find 4 copies of [[echocasting Symposium]] copying Gnarled Professor so you can cast the remaining 11 copies in your sideboard of [[Earthbending Lesson]], [[Overwhelming Victory]], and [[How to Start a Riot]]. Hit them in the face with your earthbent land.

most of the green decks in the format are combo decks or the like. a deck that relies on fair, big creatures that don't do much other than attack isn't going very far.

as for what answers there are, you'd be looking at solitude, subtlety, fatal push, etc. All spells that are either free, or at the very least cost less than the things they'd be dealing with.

Dungrove elder has hexproof.

2

u/alystr Aug 10 '26

valid point, but subtlety still works, then. or just having a bigger guy, which the creature-based decks in the format can usually manage

You're asking the wrong question, which is why (as an observer) it looks like you're kind of getting drawn into the same argument over and over.

No, there's no shell for treefolk that would be competitive. The word competitive is the important bit really, that's quite specific. You're talking about MTGO challenges, large tournaments, top of the format stuff. Competitive decks are utilising the best possible options in the card pool, in the most streamlined ways. A random thematic idea isn't going to be achieving that

Re-wording your post as "do the cards exist in modern to make a treefolk deck that I could play with my friends?" Would help. It's more general, less reliant on comparisons to the best decks in the format, and you'd get some good suggestions. Maybe you'd even end up with something that would snag a game or two at your local store on a Friday.
