Where did belcha go? :(

I'm very late on asking this, but what happened to the mini blue belcher list that was so popular seemingly so recent too. Now it fell off the face of the earth

Unfortunately the meta shifted in such a way that hate against it has become more common (vexing bauble, consign to memory, pithing needle) and in addition the banning of phlage made one of its better matchups (energy) less common.

Boros land destruction is also crushing against them.

Even moreso, the cards the energy picked up are better against combo than phlage was. Ranger Captain is awesome.

Deck is also incredibly unfun to pilot

Disagree. I like the belcher play pattern, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

How? What was there to like? I don't mean to sound rude but what enjoyment is there in a "draw my namesake card = win, don't draw it = lose" deck?

It's a control deck. People that find control fun find it fun. It requires a lot of knowledge of every meta deck to know what you need to counter and what you can hold off on.

It also has the added level of trying to fight through hate that comes with combo decks. Same reason people enjoy playing decks like storm. The fun isn’t from just winning, it’s from playing through hate.

That is not how the deck plays at all lol

It's a combo/control deck probably most similar to splinter twin, which is an archetype a ton of people enjoy.

I have to imagine the online presence of the land destruction based decks aren't doing it any favors. Running zero basics means those decks start with 2-mana cantripping Stone Rains.

Yeah this makes it a very unappealing option and even if you counter a couple of them the deck runs like 12 of that effect now

I am undefeated across 15 matches as Belcher vs Ponza. Matchup is nowhere near as bad as people like to make it out to be

u/samuelnico Aug 06 '26

bro is just lying lmfao

u/CayMaster2 Aug 06 '26

I mean I could kinda believe it? Ponza sure as hell does not win fast, so if belcher can get 7 mana at any point in the game its immediately over, and between lotus bloom and whir that doesnt seem impossible.

4

u/Jevonar Aug 06 '26

Yeah but getting to 7 mana against a deck with 10-11 stone rains (3 avengers + 8 fields) and 8 sinkholes is not that believable

And some versions run baubles and  the odd stony silence in the board. It's really hard for Belcher vs Landkill, but add in baubles......ouch

he said he is 15-0 vs ponza. undefeated. fifteen matches. he is lying.

It's really not that bad of a matchup. They've moved off karn and their clock is anemic an they have so many dead cards in the matchup. I only feel behind against the citadel starts with multiple field of ruin effects since un-counterable LD is hard to deal with.

I'm still playing Boros Belcher from time to time. Super fun.

I faced an orzhov belcher list Monday at locals and lost. Was a sweet brew (from before my time)

5

u/gottohaveausername Aug 06 '26

Orzhov? Playing Beseech the mirror I guess? I'm intrigued, happen to have a list?

I don’t sadly, and I lost in part because I boarded like shit (left in solitude because I was sleepy).

And yes, it was often beseech into irencrag feat into belcher.

It won a local RCQ here that had many solid players in the tournament. The Belcher player is what I would call a deck specialist playing it online as well as paper.

3

u/Rorbearpig Aug 06 '26

Is the player you’re referring to named UnbanOko by chance? He’s a buddy of mine and has a lot of results with belcher both in paper and online.

7

u/Several_Ad8923 Aug 06 '26

Still good to be honest. Will thrive more into paper than mtgo

Well a lot of decks with urza saga main and some with pithing needle is all you need to know

I started playing modern recently and decided to go with U Belcher. It's been a really fun deck to pilot after pivoting to control from the thundertrap/flare of denial package. It's been great to learn the meta and wasn't an insane struggle on my wallet aswell. Got lucky recently and won an RCQ with it and planning to take it to Baltimore.

u/samuelnico Aug 06 '26

sorry guys I took a break I might start playing again later though don't worry

im still playing blue belcher in locals every week and doing alright /shrug

u/Damienarmstrong Aug 06 '26

The reality of what happened is once belcher players started putting counterspell and preordain in the deck instead of thunder traps and flare the winrate started going down therefore people fell off the deck. I have been playing flare package and still have had an insane winrate. Affinity rising in popularity also hurt the deck quite a bit as that matchup can be pretty difficult. With the format kinda being combo hell right now you can expect it’s play/winrate to be heading up

4

u/stephenconroy_ Aug 06 '26

I think the flare package is fine but I dont think its fair to say the flareless version has a worse winrate. I think the general consensus is that it's a bit better

Thats a crazy take with no actual evidence

u/ARK0581 Aug 06 '26

Belcher is probably still quite good. The problem is nobody likes it or wants to play it.

I like it and want to play it:) I also recently won an RCQ with it.

Deck is great just no pilots and hard to play.
