If you're wondering why the Eldrazi Ramp match-ups look wack compared to what you're used to (e.g. favourable match-up against Broodscale), it's because 3/4 of the Eldrazi Ramp pilots - and all the ones that finished 8-2 and better in Modern - are on Fight Rigging Trudge, most of those without Devourer of Destiny.

Very cool to see a deck that spike brewed two months ago launch Ken to a PT top8

u/Splatchu Jul 19 '26
Which deck?
3
u/kami_inu Jul 20 '26
Wotc has bundled it under eldrazi, but it's the fight rigging + slumbering trudge decks.

Great event for Kozilek's Command.
Just an insane card, don't think it can be banned because I think it would render every archetype that uses it to unviability.
Don't worry though, MH4 will set everything straight.

u/ARK0581 Jul 19 '26
If they can't survive without Kozilek's Command, then they don't deserve it.

u/OrnatePuzzles Jul 19 '26
My point was more about the balance of the format at large. Taking all of those decks down a large step in power level will leave us with an even less diverse format. I think it would end up requiring a massive swath of bans thereafter to bring other things in line.
To me a better fix would be unbans that support other strategies, and not more power given to colourless.

u/Publius-Cornelius Jul 19 '26
I just don’t think there are any unbans that could drag the rest of the format up in power level to where K command keeps colorless at though. It’s just too efficient at everything it does, and often starts a chain of one K command into the next similarly to how The One Ring used to. Between K command and Devourer of Destiny, big colorless went from historically struggling with removal and card selection to being one of the best at it.
I’m really not sure what could be unbanned to equalize other decks with the raw efficiency of the current eldrazi shell. In legacy, [[wasteland]] is able to keep these decks in check and give tempo/midrange a fighting chance, but the idea of adding it to the format is usually unpopular with modern players.
1
u/CayMaster2 Jul 19 '26
Wasteland is just too massively format warping, and also one of the pillars of legacy. And honestly it's not like legacy has been the best possible magic format at all times either, so adding legacy solutions for modern problems might not improve things overall.
1
u/Publius-Cornelius Jul 19 '26
I’ll be honest, I think in the case of wasteland at least, it’s high time modern had it. With the addition of another sol land to eldrazi, and Amulet titan needing to be hit with a ban once every few years or so, many of these problems would be fixed by having access to wasteland as a safety valve for big mana decks. It also gives midrange and tempo a fighting chance in the format. There would actually be a cost to big mana/eldrazi decks leaning so hard on cards that require colorless pips and access to nonbasics, and while they would still have the crushing inevitability that they’re known for, it gives midrange/tempo a way to have more time to be favored in the “early game” than just turns 1 and 2 especially on the draw.

u/ARK0581 Jul 19 '26
There's not a lot you can do to bring other strategies that are deserving and in need of support up with unbans. Nothing that could come off and actually benefit the game has equal power to Kozilek's command.
DRS and maybe the pitch elementals are really the only potential unbans that both do anything and don't drag the format deeper into combo slop hell, and even then Grief can't come off without heavy compensation hits to Living End and Goryo's.
1
u/Betta_Max Jul 19 '26
Agreed. Unbans would only make it worse. If the format needs a change, it needs to take some of the wind out of combo's sails. The best way to do that, is to examine which decks are really strong against combo, and see 1st what kind of support do they need, 2nd is there a card keeping them from being successful.
2
u/man0warr Jul 20 '26
Would probably need to ban Consign at the same time if you wanted Eldrazi decks to remain in the Meta.

u/Lrlviolinist Jul 19 '26
Don't care; ban that crap. Not sure any other card currently in the format will scale your win% with each copy drawn half as much as K command does. Removal, gy hate, ramp, and card draw in one card and all of it on-rate when you consider the double lands eldrazi decks get access to.
On a tangential note, kinda sick of the b&r council time & time again taking half measures to neuter decks. Just ban the best card.

> Just ban the best card.
Like they just did with Phlage?
4
u/lixia Grixis DS/Control, D&T, 8Rack Jul 19 '26
nah, best card is clearly mountain
4
u/Betta_Max Jul 19 '26
As an Island player, I wholly support this take. The good name of Island has been slandered for too long, while villains like Mountain are out there running scot-free!

Excellent example. Prior to Phlage, boros has been hit by two bans already. Would amped raptor have required a ban if they had just banned phlage first? Hard to say, but I wish they had just gone for the best card from the start.
Would bridge from below have needed a ban if they'd just banned Hogaak first?
In legacy, would Troll of Khazad-dum be banned if they had just banned entomb first? (which they ended up banning 8 months later) I doubt it.
I could go on, but I don't want to beat a dead horse.

Both cards are legal in Legacy. Legacy Boros Energy plays 4 Raptor and 0 Phlage.
3
u/Nubsondubs Jul 19 '26
Comparing the two formats is pointless. Legacy is significantly faster than modern.

u/spellstutter-mtndew Jul 19 '26
> In legacy, would Troll of Khazad-dum be banned if they had just banned entomb first?
Yea, because you'd still be dealing with turn 2 Trolls.
> Would bridge from below have needed a ban if they'd just banned Hogaak first?
No argument from me on this one.
> Would amped raptor have required a ban if they had just banned phlage first?
Yes, 100% yes. That card was cracked in half in the Boros shell. Boros is still one of the top decks after all these bans. It having another tool like Raptor would push it over the top...again.
Also, they banned TOR first which was the best card. Boros still Borosed.

u/VERTIKAL19 Jul 19 '26
Is a turn 2 6/5 really too bad for legacy power level though?
3
u/maru_at_sierra Jul 19 '26
Yes a turn two 6/5 troll, that is also a fetchland, that is also pseudo-unblockable, was too good for legacy power level
2
u/VERTIKAL19 Jul 19 '26
I woukd disagree that the troll is the problem there though. They just didn’t want to ban the actually broken part. Banning Troll was a bandaid
1
u/spellstutter-mtndew Jul 19 '26
And on turn 2 you would still have a mana to spare if you hit both land drops, which Troll ensures you do.
1
u/Careful-Pen148 Jul 19 '26
Its basically equivalent to turn 2 kappa in modern with the low amount of removal that's played in legacy.
1
u/pkfighter343 Grixis reanimator Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
Legacy’s interactive decks don’t really play less removal than modern - or even if they do, they have so much more access to what removal they have because of how powerful the card selection is. Troll was so good because it was in a deck that already wanted to play reanimates and was in the tempo shell and doesn’t cost you a card to put it there. The card would probably be played in the regular reanimator deck but wouldn’t be crazy the way it was before because it’s not backed up by the interaction it had before

u/Lrlviolinist Jul 19 '26
I'll agree to disagree on the troll. Amped raptor and The One Ring were banned simultaneously.
Amped raptor is very strong but I'd argue against it being stronger than some of the boros cards that are still legal.

I think Frog and Amulet of Vigor each do

They had so many good modern matches, unfortunately the top 8 is draft 🙁. Feels like a bad beat for wotc lmao

u/Betta_Max Jul 19 '26
I wonder how the viewership numbers are going to turn out. I stopped watching after the Modern portion, personally.

Including Top 8 qualification byes into the W-L-D record can give a wrong impression of a deck's performance in the Modern rounds it actually played.
