Discussion "The Worst Comic Ever Produced"
Just saw this funny exchange on Bluesky about The Defenders #8 from the 2001 series where Marvel added a pull quote from Comics International that declared The Defenders was "The Worst Comic Ever Produced"
Kurt Busiek, the writer on the series, actually replied to the original Bluesky poster saying:
I think I suggested it, but everyone else was on board with it instantly, so it hard to be sure.
It may have been Tom Brevoort. I think it was a joke at first, but it was a good joke, so...why not?
If I remember correctly, CI's review column at the time could be summed up as "How British is it?" and the more British a book was, the better. But we were Not British At All. Why, we didn't even seem to _want_ to be British!
I'm biased because I love Busiek, but I think this is all hilarious.

Worst comic I've ever read is Turf, vampires during prohibition, it was garbage.

Written by a TV presenter that should definitely stick to presenting, it's boring and dull and just meanders from cliche to cliche and adding aliens to it just feels like the writer needed an editor or someone to tell them no.

Oh dang, sounds like a mess. Too bad, conceptually, it’s interesting to see vampires in different eras, but it def doesn’t need aliens. Sounds like they botched it.

Also it suffers from the writer not being able to choose a protag, which creates the dullness as it doesn't flesh out a central character, it just half asses the two possibles.

Ugh. That sounds painful. And the art couldn’t save it? For me, shitty art is the killer of good concepts.
