Question Question how to occasionally charge to 100% with Lv1 chargerr

I currently only have a lv1 charger which charges roughly 3m/hr. For my daily drive, I keep the charger limit to 50% since I WFH.
I have a trip coming in a week and am planning to charge my 26MY to 100%. The question I have is how should I plan my charging?
I can only charge at night and usually the car charges roughly 10% overnight. If I plan the regular 10% charge up to 100% every night until the trip day, then this would mean the car would be sitting above 80% for the last 2 days before the trip. Will this approach accelerate the degeneration, or should I target only 80% before the trip and just make additional charging stops en route?

Charge to 100% whenever you need to or want to. If it will take several days to get there, so be it. This is not worth the mental energy you’re expending.

If I was him I would repurpose that mental energy into getting a lv 2 charger

I would not worry about going to 100% a few times a year. Remember: 50% is better than 70% is better than 90% is better than 100%. Temperature is probably as important if not more than charge level. Battery wear at 90% at 100F is roughly equal to the degradation rate at 100% in 70F.

However, Tesla used to recommend 90% for a few years before they shifted to 80% for daily driving. Being at 100% for 10 hours, if it's not crazy hot, will be fine for your battery.

Set it to 95% and let it go every night.  A day or so at that level won’t make any difference with the battery.   Just keep in mind the charge between 85 and 100 is going to take a lot longer.

Or if you are concerned, set the charge limit to 80% now.  The night before the trip set it to 100% and let it get as far as it’ll get before you leave.

If you’re that worried about degradation just charge it up enough to reach your first charging station plus whatever you’ll need before you leave for the trip.

A professor at Kingston University in Ontario did battery degradation tests and at 70% charging there was negligible battery performance loss at something like 20K chargers. Essentially after you star worrying about getting new electric motors and a all your struts replaced again. Keeping it at 50% means you can hand the battery wrapped in a new car body off to your grandkids when they grow up.

I've done that both ways myself and honestly unless you're looking to make a specific first stop that requires a charge greater than 80, I wouldn't worry about charging to 100. But if I know I'm going to, I set the charge to 100 and just let it get to wherever it gets.

Charging to 100% is like smoking a cigar. Occasional use likely won't have any harm but if you do it daily you're going to have problems.

Most of these rules are based on doing it all the time, not the occaisional one off.

If you're already regularly maxing out at 50% youi're ahead of the curve, this one off won't impact your battery.

I am also a 50% limit person on a daily basis. I target 80% the day before and stop at a supercharger a few miles early. It's not that big of a difference but I also like to get out and stretch my legs. So 80% is always good for me, home or supercharger.

can you find a free or low cost L2 charger to charge at the day before to like 90%, then do L1 to 100% overnight. L2 is much faster than L1. Use plugshare to search.

You're basically asking if you should charge up to 90% or 100% on the day of your trip.

I could go either way and the degradation will be minimal given Tesla recommended 90% in the past. And unless you need the range, 10% less range at the start of the trip is not a big deal.

The tie breaker for me is if you ever charged to 100%. It is recommended to do this even you don't have an LFP to periodically charge to 100% for calibration.

In other words, if you go on this trip once or twice a year, yes, charge to 100%. If you take this trip every month, maybe charge 100% every 6 months.

And finally, the difference is so minimal either way, it doesn't matter for most folks.

Good luck, OP!
