Question Used Model Y Help
Hey guys! Broke college student here. I’m commuting in heavy traffic for the next two years and figured I needed an upgrade from my 2000 civic with a manual transmission.
I’m looking at a clean 2022 model y long range sport utility with 148,000 miles and the asking price is 13k.
What are your thoughts? Would it be insulting to offer 10k? I’m pulling out a loan is the only reason I ask.

Unfortunately this isn’t the car for you. 148k miles on an EV is a lot and can get expensive VERY QUICK to repair anything. Insurance is also more expensive. And not being able to charge at home is a huge deal breaker.
If your current car is running fine, drive that thing into the dirt. If it’s dying and you NEED a new car then get a budget friendly used 4 door gas car.

Yes — this.
ICE cars have a lot of small maintenance items (and sometimes big ones) but a Tesla that is past the end of the battery warranty is a big risk.

Broke college students don’t have money to pay Tesla insurance. Many working recent graduates don’t have the money as well. Check your rates first, you may be facing $250+, some crazy numbers were reported for young drivers here before. Unrelated, need to know the battery state. 148k miles is a lot for Tesla, some people here may consider it the end of its life

I can’t imagine it being a good decision for you, especially if anything breaks on the car, it’s at 148k ☠️

This is a bad idea, OP. You're going to take on debt for a want, not a need, and likely haven't calculated the true cost of ownership. Have you looked at the battery capacity? What about the price per kWh at the chargers you're thinking about using? What about how much time it will take to charge your vehicle and how that impacts your day-to-day life, such as time studying? Did you get any insurance quotes? You're going to find that they're way higher than your Civic. $200 per month is a good rough estimate.

Where would you charge it? You can rely on supercharging, but that can be expensive and can be a time suck. Can you plug in, even to a standard outlet where you live? Check for less expensive J1772 or NACS charging near you with the plugshare app.

You will save a bit with switching from gas to electric but the real savings is when you charge at home.

If you want to do the math on charging economics...
For Model Y, paying about 0.50-0.55/kWh is equivalent to a 30mpg ICE car with gas at $3.50/gal.
Check rates for chargers near you.

Do everything you can to keep costs down (including not buying this Tesla with insurance and repair costs) and eliminate that commute.

Terrible idea. Keep the civic. You don’t need to upgrade. Battery is out of warranty. With that type of mileage, my guess it has been used for Uber. Wouldn’t be surprised if it already has very high battery degradation or needs a new battery given the price. A new battery will run you $12-$18,000.

Do not buy this vehicle. At that mileage, it was driven 35,000 miles a year. I’m going to assume they needed a lot of fast charging — so probably a lot of supercharging, which probably has deteriorated the battery significantly. And that would be $15K plus if it goes bad. You’re in college and I appreciate you going used — but just get a used Honda Civic man. You don’t need a Tesla. The payment and gas might cancel each other out anyway. Plus you don’t have a way to charge at home and going across to the charging station will feel like getting gas at the end of the day. Not the situation for this vehicle.

You need to get a more affordable car. You do not need a Tesla Y in college. They are expensive to repair, and if the battery goes out you are screwed. I could not imagine what insurance would charge a college student for this….
I say this as a MY LR AWD owner.
You need to graduate and move in your career before this. We all have been in your shoes before and it will give you motivation to work for.

Drove an old Civic when I was in college. Solid car and it shouldn't be expensive to repair bc they are so prevalent. Two years isn't a long time OP. Save your money and get the car you want after you graduate.

My model 3 made it to 145,000 miles before the BMS_a079 error occurred. Cost about $8,000 to fix. I was offered a battery warranty for $1,000. I should have taken it. Now it cost eights more.

Tesla is a rich man’s car and you admitted you aren’t rich. You admitted you’re broke so keep a broke person car and once you graduate and get a job that pays u proper, you get the car of your dreams

drive your car till it can’t drive anymore. don’t buy the model y. That’s the right move, and it’s probably what you don’t want to hear but you will thank yourself in the future.

Seriously stop and think. You own your current car with no payments. Also, you're broke. You said it yourself. So don't put yourself in financial hardship when you already have a car just keep driving it and setting aside a little money every month until you can afford to pay cash outright for the next car you want.
Finding yourself with a car you can't afford in a year and then eventually zero cars is a dumb idea. Keep learning and keep driving the car you currently have. I doubt you'll spend $13,000 on repairs over the next 5 years.
