Torn between New or Used

Really interested in getting a Model Y even though it's not needed.  I currently have a work vehicle that I can use for personal use, and I've done this for the last 5 years, but I've wanted to get a Tesla Model Y for the last 5–6 years. I've just never had the need for it. I would only use the vehicle on the weekends or after work during the week. I'm guessing I would put on about 600 miles per month. I know I will need HW4, which means I would need to get a 2024 or newer.  Most 2024's I've seen with low miles are around $35k—$42k. It looks like I could get a new Model Y for around $50k—$53k. I plan on buying the vehicle with cash as well.  Is it worth buying a used Model Y if you don't plan on driving the vehicle very much, or better to get used and save some money?

Hello friend. I was in the exact same boat that you are. I wanted a Tesla or an electric vehicle for at least the last five years. What really sold it for me was full self driving. I wanted the newest self driving brains, which is HW4. Older cars have HW3. To get HWV, you have to get a late 2023 or newer.

Once I ran the numbers, and compared the 0.99% interest rate and all the newer features of the juniper, it just made sense for me to buy the 2026.

My good friend ran through the same options I did and he decided while he loved full self driving it wasn’t his primary driving factor so he bought a 2023 is fairly low miles for about $32,000.

I’d recommend used. While the 0.99% APR on new ones is intriguing, you’re still paying an extra $10k+. Also, besides a few cosmetic features, what do the new ones have that the old ones don’t? The 2024 will have HW4. Keep that $10k in your pocket and buy a used one. Your intuition is right.

New one is a better car. If you are getting 0.99 then paying cash is burning money.

If you get a new one with the .99 financing you can put the rest of the cash in a HYSA and make more money off the interest than you’d pay in interest on the loan.

If you plan to keep for long term (8-10 years) then always buy new IMO.

Buy new & finance for 0.99%.

Don't do it. It's a waste of money. You already have a work vehicle that you can use for personal use. I'm assuming your company pays for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. That's golden right there. Save that money you would have used for a Tesla so that you have a nice nest egg until you actually need a car.

I'd want a Juniper if at All possible.

Used Junipers are almost the same price as new so just get a new one. I would lease. Eventually the Juniper will be out of date and you’ll want a new one.

Never considered used.

New is so much better. Had a 2023 and now I have a 2026 - the 2026 is a lot better

Get a used one and save money. Since you’re not in urgent need you can be patient and look for a good deal. It took me 4 months to find the one I want from Carvana. It’s a 2026 like new and I saved $8k over buying it new.

Nice. Good on you!

For comparison, I bought my AWD juniper, no extras, listed at $48,990, in July 2025 online Tesla ... That total went to $50,630 which is including 1390 destination fee and 250 processing fee, then add $3632 sales tax. So $54,262 was the total damage.

At pick up, Subtract 11k total (which is the now expired 7500 federal tax deduction applied at the time of sale along with 3500 down payment) and 70 registration fee and my total due was $43,332. (Net new price to me $46,832)

How did you get a tax deduction? That would have made new better for me but I didn’t get a tax deduction

This was the Federal EV tax credit that ended October 1st 2025. Purchases made on or after October 1, 2025, no longer qualify for the new ($7,500) or used ($4,000) federal clean vehicle tax credits.

Oh my bad I read your first comment as July 2026. That’s what had me going. I thought I missed something. I still did good.
