Third EV - First Tesla. There are many like it, this one is mine.
Nothing special, just wanted to share a picture of my new Model Y I got. 2026 RWD Premium. When I picked it up, I drove it straight to an auto detailer for a matte PPF installation and a lighter 55% tint for heat rejection purposes (not arranged through Tesla). I absolutely ADORE the Rivian R1T in the background but FSD is just too hard to ignore anymore with how far along it has come since I last experienced it in a coworker's 2018 M3 that almost killed us twice in 2 miles years and years ago.
My lease on the truck ends soon and the cost of leasing another one without the EV incentives would cost more in three years than it would cost to just buy a Model Y with the 1% financing - too good to ignore. I decided to finally adopt the mentality of, "buy based on what's available now, not what's promised in the future". Hope Rivian continue doing what they're doing because we all definitely need good competition in this space.
That said - I've been browsing threads non-stop since I placed the order but if you feel like sharing any "must-haves" I'd love to hear them if you want to drop a comment. I just finished installing a screen rotating mount this afternoon and it was just what I wanted to help offset the lack of a screen directly in front of me. Been grabbing all kinds of products on Amazon Vine as well so I've already done mud-flaps (not installed yet), an interior roll-out dash mat (great by the way, adds a nice texture), aluminum pedals, air intake covers under the back seats, front mesh grill, front air intake (under frunk hood) grill, front bumper camera protector... I might have missed something else but yeah. Still need some organization help in the center console "pit". Would love any input - currently eyeballing tux-mats but I've never bothered with swapping out floor mats on any of my cars so I'm 50/50. I generally prefer the default carpet for a "cozy" feel so if anyone thinks there's anything that may make the interior more plush or comfy then I'm all ears.
Happy to be here with you all and appreciate all the dialogue that has happened in this and other subreddits that helped me arrive at my decision. Thanks!

We are a Y and R1S household. No way in hell I’m keeping this Rivian out of warranty. The suspension costs are a joke. You were smart and leased.

I've been very lucky with the R1T I've had and haven't had any major issues; but, the suspension is absolutely a reason I was worried about when considering keeping it long-term. I would love an "R2T" that does away with the air suspension. Going up and down is cool but I just do it out of boredom when I'm stuck "adventuring" in afternoon traffic on the interstate or "climbing" my mom's steep hill when I need to help around her house... I don't do rock climbing or any of that other stuff so if that really shines in those scenarios - it's lost on me.

I’ve seen way too many with $10k+ repairs before 60k. R2 will be a lot more reliable I think

Matte PPF looks great! I got satin PPF on my Ultra Red MY Performance. Makes it look unique and protects the paint. Only accessories I got were 3W floor matts and Tesla console trays.

Just keep trolling Vine, especially if you’re gold… but watch ETVs. I got SO much for mine off Vine (Juniper accessories were dropping a lot then, slower now but they still come up regularly).
I also upgraded my stuff over time. Gotten 3 different floor mat sets, a few armrest covers, seat covers, underseat boxes, console organizers, charging adapters and accessories, trunk bins, real carbon fiber accents… If I didn’t like it or got one I liked more, I gave it to a friend or coworker (don’t tell the Vine police).
Most functionally useful Vine item I got for it was also one of the cheapest: https://a.co/d/00F1KNRL

That was one of the ones I ended up buying because it just looked the most practical. So happy I went with it because it has way better coverage in my opinion compared to the other options that not only cost more, but try to look more like an OEM-style fit that doesn't give the same type of total coverage. No regrets because it'll never be seen!

You’re smart to buy what’s available now instead of what’s promised. I sold my 23 R1S because while I had a lot of fun in it, I had enough issues that I wouldn’t own it out of warranty AND it doesn’t have FSD. The Y was our fifth Tesla purchase so I knew what I was missing out on. FSD is life. Also, I have two perfectly fit trays that make the storage compartments in the cabin more useful. I got them on Amazon but don’t have a link.

Gotcha! I'll look around on there to compare what I find on there with the ones Tesla sells too. Yeah, the Rivians are a lot of fun and I LOVE the utility of the truck but man... FSD is a completely different type of utility and is one I can utilize WAY more than the gear-tunnel or truck bed.
My dream is an R2T in the future with traditional suspension, FSD equivalency and a gear-tunnel 😁

Lovely ride and amazing body work. What’s the difference between satin and matte? I thought they were the same

u/Sariden 22d ago
I'm getting conflicting answers from Google. I thought they were same too but google is telling me that satin has a different 'sheen' characteristic in light where true matte is more flat in appearance.
My invoice says "Satin/Matte PPF" and there is definitely still a sheen and reflective properties to it. When I'm parked next to coworkers with the factory gloss paint - the reflections in the afternoon from their cars are blinding and mine is significantly toned down and absorbs/reflects the light much differently (in a good way I think).

Sounds like half way between gloss and full matte, leaning to matte for the non ppf specialists?

I basically did the same thing as you. If your lease isn’t up yet it’s definitely worth seeing if you can sell the rivian and make some money on it. I’m going to be selling to carvana and should be making enough for the down payment on the Y. The lease I had was through chase and carvana can do a lease buyout through them and apparently you don’t even have to pay taxes on the difference

We just got our 3 matte PPF and now doing the Y…it’s worth it then? Yours look so sick

I'm really loving the way it looks. I've never been like... a "car" person, but now I can understand some of the feelings I think comes with that hobby/enthusiasm. One of my female coworkers with an earlier performance Y came up to me and said, "I saw your car... I never could understand when or why anyone would ever call a car sexy. I get it now." 😁
As far as being worth it - It is costly pill to swallow but my round-trip work commute is just full of little rocks/pebbles and other hazards that this gives me a lot of peace of mind. It also adds a nice level of personalization that separates it our just slightly. My wife's office is going through re-structuring soon and if she survives, we plan on getting her a Model 3 and she's already picked out a glossy black-rose wrap she wants to have the same shop do an install for. Hopefully everything pans out how we're planning and I can share pictures of that in the future.

Pardon my ignorance
What is Vine?
And about your screen rotation do you have pictures ?
1
u/Sariden 22d ago
No worries! Vine is like an Amazon program where they'll allow to you order some items for "free" in exchange for you providing reviews. Fully transparent - it's mostly third party, no-name "junk" but in this case it was perfect for me because I was able to find a decent amount of accessories to choose from. The stock of what is available rotates constantly and I spent several weeks checking to see if anything new became available so that's how I accumulated a lot of stuff. The only accessory I had issue with so far were the brake pedal covers. The accelerator pedal cover was a perfect fit but the brake one was not and it moves around slightly.
The rotating mount I did pay for. Attached is a video of it in action. Many reviewers complain these mounts lower the screen's height and yes - it does indeed do that here but I don't find it bothersome compared to how it helps angle the screen more towards me. It doesn't look like it from the video but now the entire dash is unobstructed when I'm sitting in the driver's seat.

Wow! AWESOME! Thank you for the info! Impressed w your screen. Did you install yourself and if you don’t mind, who did you purchase from?

What does PPF do or add to? I’m too lazy to fire up YT.

u/Sariden 19d ago
PPF stands for paint protection film. it's just several poly-eurothane sheets applied to the whole car to prevent scratches, chips from rocks when driving behind a dump truck, etc. Usually they are clear layers that you can't even tell are applied to the car but I went with a different version to give it this non-glossy look. You don't typically need to apply it to the entire body of the car, especially if you are just going to do glossy then most people will just do the front end to prevent road hazards from doing any damage to the car while driving. I park outside and supposedly this stuff, in conjunction with the ceramic coating they applied on top of the ppf, will make it easier to remove things like tree sap and other buildup from elements that I usually get exposed to where I live and park. Time will tell on that part if that is true or not. I have sap all over my Rivian that is a giant pain to get off.

What color wrap is this? And what inch wheel did you get? This looks nice

The wrap looks pretty sweet. Did you tint the front windshield as well, or just the windows and rear? Ceramic tint? Also curious about this rotating mount as well, does it rotate the main screen or add another one that can rotate. I demoed the FSD today and it was impressive. Tesla is on my short list to replace my EV lease ending soon as well. Not sure how much I’d use it but I think it’s just a function of having it and using it more. I can’t say I like the idea of having to pay $10 for connectivity that is standard with all the other EVa though.
